Baby Movement Monitor Buying Guide
Parents can purchase sound, video, or movement monitors so that they feel secure about their baby’s well-being when they are out of the room. Movement monitors track a baby's breathing or, with some models, the baby's oxygen saturation level and heart rate. For parents, movement monitors provide a way to protect their child from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Just remember, a baby movement monitor is a warning device, and not a prevention device. You should learn and practice safe sleeping methods. In addition, when your child is in a stroller or a car, baby movement monitors cannot distinguish whether the movement it is detecting is from your child's breathing or from the stroller or car.

Baby Movement Monitor Features
Baby movement monitors feature either wearable monitors or sensor pads.

Wearable Monitors

A good wearable monitor should be comfortable, especially if your baby can roll over, and it requires a secure attachment to prevent the monitor from becoming detached. A detached monitor can set off a false alarm.

Some wearable models clip onto your baby's diaper. These can be bulky, and they can be uncomfortable if your child can roll over onto his or her stomach.

Button and sock models are more comfortable, but you have to remember to remove the monitor before you put your baby's clothing in the washer.

Sensor Pad Monitors

Sensor pads are placed under the mattress, but they need to be used with a hard surface. They cannot be used with foam or hollow-core mattresses. A board can be added to the crib so that a movement monitor sensor pad will work properly.

Sensor pads are more reliable than wearable monitors because they don’t become disconnected from your child and set off false no-motion alarms. However, the need for a hard surface under a sensor pad makes them unsuitable for travel.

Parental Units

Be aware that some monitors do not include parental units. A parental unit ensures that parents hear the alarms. Instead of parental units, some models use Wi-Fi to connect to your smartphone.

While a Wi-Fi connection allows parents to receive the actual monitor readouts, you have to be sure that the Wi-Fi connection remains strong. These Wi-Fi models also expose your child to electromagnetic field (EMF) emissions. You should check the level of these emissions and be sure you feel secure with them.

Additional Features

Some units combine a movement monitor with a sound monitor. This is a more-for-your-money option that is worth investigating.

Monitors also can include vibration features that wake babies from a sound sleep to encourage the baby to move a little.

Things to Consider
Below are some additional factors to consider when purchasing a baby movement monitor.

Test the Alarm

When you are shopping for a monitor, be sure to test the alarm to hear how it will sound in the nursery. The sound of some nursery alarms can upset your child. This can create an unpleasant situation if your child was asleep and the alarm was a false alarm because a wearable monitor becoming detached.

However, if the movement monitor does not include a parental unit, you do have to be able to hear the alarm when you are in another room or asleep, or when the monitor might be covered by the sheet covering your baby’s mattress, or when it has fallen off and is partially under your child.

One solution to this issue is to purchase a sound monitor along with the movement monitor. Sound monitors always have a parental unit that will let you hear if the movement monitor is sending out an alert or if your baby is crying.

If you can afford them, video monitor parental units located in several rooms throughout the house allow you to immediately see what is happening with your child before you rush to his or her room.

Range

Another issue to consider is that the range stated for the monitor may not be accurate. The stated range may have been measured in an open space in which there were no walls between the monitor and the parental unit. The walls of your home may block the signal and reduce the range at which the parental unit can receive the signal.

Batter Operated Models

If you purchase a model that uses batteries, you need to be alert to when batteries need replacing and have extra batteries available. You should also keep the parental unit plugged in and charged as much as possible.

If you can purchase a second parental unit, you can keep it plugged in and charging in your bedroom all the time. During the day, you can keep the first parental unit with you and have the plug for it at your desk, in the kitchen, or wherever you spend most of your time during the day. This will help keep the parental units from running out of power on you.

Sensitivity to Noise

Some sensor pads are extremely sensitive to noise and vibration, so they can detect noise and vibration from registers, fans, and other appliances. This interference can trick the monitor into not responding if your child stops moving. When your child's crib is empty, test and adjust sensor pad monitors to tune out any potential interference.

Final Thoughts
Baby movement monitors are intended only to alert you if your child has stopped moving so that you can check on his or her well being. Even though some models provide you with a readout on your child's oxygen saturation level and heart rate, this information is not intended to be used to monitor any medical condition.

These monitors also only serve as a warning device, not a prevention device, for SIDS. It is important to learn and practice safe sleeping methods:

  • Your child should be sleeping alone in his or her own bed.

  • Infants should be placed in their crib on their back.

  • You should provide your child with a firm mattress that fits the crib and does not leave a gap more than two fingers wide on any side.

  • Only cover the mattress with a tight fitted sheet.

  • Do not put any blankets, bumpers, or toys in the crib with your child.

  • Keep the room at a temperature that is comfortable for an adult wearing lightweight clothing.

  • Provide good airflow without any drafts, and do not smoke in your baby's room or around your baby.

These safe sleeping methods should be practiced for your child's first year, but are most important during the first six months.
