Basal Thermometers Buying Guide

When using a thermometer to determine if you have a fever, all you generally need is a thermometer that can give you a reading in degrees, since a fever will usually raise your body temperature at least a full degree or higher. basal temperatures, however, are best measured in tenths or hundredths of degrees for best accuracy.

Body temperatures can actually fluctuate mildly throughout the day, depending on a number of different factors. The types of food and beverages you consume can have an impact on body temperature, as can exercise and even the time of day it is. At night, however, your body cools during sleep and tends to remain stable throughout the night. Your most stable and predictable body temperature generally occurs when you first wake up in the morning. This is what is referred to as your Basal Body Temperature or BBT.

When a woman is ovulating, however, this resting or basal temperature will raise as much as a full degree. This is what basal thermometers are designed to measure. There are two different types of basal thermometers, however, with a number of different features. Here is a buying guide to help you find the right thermometer for you.

Why types of basal thermometers are available?
There are two types of basal thermometers, liquid filled glass thermometers and digital thermometers. Liquid filled glass thermometers used to be filled with mercury but have largely been phased out in favor of alcohol filled thermometers because of the toxicity of mercury. While there is no danger as long as the mercury stays inside the thermometer, if the glass were to break, mercury is highly toxic. While you probably can't even buy a mercury thermometer these days, they are still floating around so you might want to purchase one rather than inheriting one from an older family member.

The other type of basal thermometer is a digital thermometer. Glass thermometers can be harder to use, but offer greater accuracy. Digital thermometers have a number of features that make them far more convenient, but also have some drawbacks. One thing to keep in mind is that you are looking for changes in your normal temperature. This means there are two kinds of accuracy a thermometer can offer: absolute accuracy and relative accuracy. While a digital thermometer might be off by a few tenths of a degree, as long as it is uniformly off the same amount each day, you can still get an accurate reporting of any changes. While a glass thermometer may give you a more absolute accurate reading, relative accuracy is what is most important in determining ovulation.

Which type is better?
Digital thermometers tend to be less expensive than glass thermometers and have a number of features that make them preferable to glass. A digital readout is generally much easier to read than a glass thermometer and displays are often backlit making them easier to read in a dimly lit room. You can also store the temperature for recording later in the day. Glass thermometers also need to be shaken the night before. They need to be shaken before they are used, but since any movement can disrupt your basal temperature, if you wait to shake it until the mooring, you may preclude yourself from getting an accurate reading.

One drawback to digital thermometers, however, is that they can often quit suddenly and without warning. Keep in mind that it can take up to 90 days to establish a baseline, or a clear indication of what a normal BBT is for you. There are always going to be a few mornings where you either forget to take your temperature or take it after you have already moved, which can already raise your temperature by a few tenths of a degree.

Remember that digital thermometers are not quite as accurate as glass thermometers and can already be off by a few tenths of a degree. This means that if your digital thermometer breaks and you have to get a new one, you may have to start from scratch in determining what your normal basal temperature is with a new thermometer. It's only when you know for sure what your normal baseline is that you can confidently trust any aberrations. So, while there are definitely a number of perks to using a digital thermometer, there can definitely be some drawbacks as well.

In addition, as the batteries begin to wear down, it can also affect the thermometer's ability to deliver an accurate reading. Keep in mind that you are looking for a temperature variation as small as one half to one degree, so accurate readings are highly important. In addition, they use batteries which need to be changed regularly, which can also be a drawback for some.

What are some features of digital thermometers?
Digital thermometers come with a number of features that can make them preferable to glass even in spite of the drawbacks. In addition to the lower cost and easy-to-read display, some models offer a number of other features as well. Here are some common added features of digital basal thermometers:

Tells you exactly when you are ovulating: While the goal of taking your basal temperature is to determine when you are ovulating, there can still be some guesswork involved or it may not be exactly clear. Some thermometers, like the iBasal Digital Thermometer, allow you to input additional information and will tell you specifically when you are ovulating, removing any doubt.

FDA Approved: Many basal thermometers are FDA approved, which means you can trust their reliability and accuracy. When such an important issue as fertility is at stake, you want the confidence of knowing that a product you are using has been tested and approved by a regulatory agency.

Beeps when ready: Since you take your basal temperature as soon as you wake, you may still be sleepy and groggy and may fall asleep with the thermometer still in your mouth. In addition, it can sometimes be hard to know exactly when a thermometer has had enough time to get an accurate reading. A digital thermometer when beep when it has an accurate reading so you know you are done.

Stores readings: Sometimes you may want to sleep a bit more after taking your temperature rather than turning on a light to record a reading. With a digital thermometer you can simply remove the thermometer and go back to sleep knowing that your reading will be recorded for later. Some thermometers will even store several days of readings just in case you forget to record one.

Fast readings: While most digital thermometers can take up to a full minute to give you an accurate reading - and glass thermometers can take up to 5 minutes - devices like the SANPU Digital Basal Thermometer can give you an accurate reading in as little as 10 seconds. The caveat to this, however, is that it may not give you the most accurate reading over time.

Conclusion:
When it comes to choosing the right thermometer for you, there is no right or wrong. There are advantages and disadvantages to all types of thermometers. Some digital thermometers can give you a great deal more information but may also be hard to program, read or use. There are a number of thermometers available that are simpler and easier to use but also don't provide as much information. Glass thermometers will unquestionably give you the most accurate readings, but can also be the most difficult to use. Here is a summation of the pros and cons of each:

GLASS:

Pros:

  • Most accurate

  • No batteries

  • Long lasting

Cons:

  • Takes longer to get a reading

  • Has to be shaken down the night before

  • Readings must be recorded immediately

  • Sometimes difficult to read

DIGITAL:

Pros:

  • Easier to read

  • Wide number of features

  • Will save temperature for recording later

Cons:

  • Can quit without warning

  • Not as accurate

  • Need batteries

  • Can be complicated to use
