Bike Child Seats Buying Guide

If you love cycling, having a child can stall you from doing what you enjoy the most. Well, it does not have to be this way. Having a toddler in your life should not be the end of your cycling adventures. There is a solution to that. As soon as your child is able to sit upright, you can bring them along on your cycling activities. This means that you get a chance to do what you like best without worrying about leaving your child at home. What’s more is that you both get to enjoy the cycling expedition. That’s a win-win situation for both of you.
Before going for that maiden ride with your baby, you will need to consider several things. Firstly, you need to purchase a bike seat, if you do not already have one. Secondly, you need to examine whether it is compatible with your bike and its ability to carry your baby.
This guide will give you informative points on what to look out for when buying a bike child seat.
Compatibility of your bike to child seats
Bikes are of various types. They are designed differently to suit the users’ various needs. This means that not all bikes can fit a child seat. In most cases, the child seat is likely to be fitted either at the rear of the bike or at the front part of the bike. This means that the bike’s tubes need to be sturdy enough to handle the extra weight.
On the other hand, the bike frame needs to be straight so that your child is comfortable when riding. This indicates that bikes that have curved or indented tubes are not suitable for a child seat installation. If you have this type of bike, it means you need to get another bike for yourself first before you can decide to get a bike seat for your baby.
Alternatively, you may decide to readjust your bike’s frame so that it can be straight enough to hold a baby seat. Whatever you decide, make sure that the bike is modified appropriately in order to make the child seat easy to mount.
Age and weight of the child
If your children can sit upright all by themselves, it is an indication that they are ready for their first bike ride with you. Therefore, before you buy them the bike seat, consider their weight and age. Most companies categorize a bike seat in accordance with the weight of the toddler. This means that bike seats vary in sizes and the safety devices that they come with, depending on the intended age of the baby.
For the very young ones, the seat needs to be more compact and have extra soft material to sooth them as they ride with you. They need to be highly padded to ensure that most of the bike’s vibrations are absorbed, giving the toddler a smooth and enjoyable ride. For the older babies, the seat might have lesser padding and reduced number of the safety straps. This is because it is assumed that older children can support themselves comfortably.
The child seat you will choose will also depend on the weight of the baby. This is important for both safety and comfort. If the toddler’s weight is heavy, you need to get a bike seat that can accommodate the weight. When the baby seats can firmly hold them, the ride becomes even smoother. That’s because the rider can brake comfortably without worrying about the toddler’s safety.
Seat positioning on the bike
Various seats fit differently on bikes. This means that some seats may be specifically designed for either the rear or front part of the bike. You need to be sure about where the seat is being installed before you choose one.
a)

Front fit seats

These seats fit just below the handles on the parent bike. So, the child seat is fitted at the front part of the bike tube. This arrangement is suitable for very young babies. If you have an infant, you definitely want to be able to see them throughout the ride. In this case, the front seat is the most suitable for you. The main advantage of this is that you can converse with your riding partner and watch your baby as you ride. The downside to this is that the seat may hinder a little bit of ground visibility and take up a lot of leg space so that cycling becomes a bit difficult.
b)

Rear fit seats

These bike seats fit at the rear part of the bike. They are either fitted on the rear bike tube or on the rack. They are suitable for much older children.
When the child weighs more, it is only safe to place them on the rear part of the bike so that you can gain more control of the bike. Therefore, if your kid is between 10 months and 3 years old you can comfortably get them rear bike seats. The disadvantage is that there would be a limited conversation since you are not able to see the child as you ride.
The great thing, however, is that you will have more leg room at the front of the bike, hence making the ride smooth. Additionally, it is suitable for longer rides, since your child can sleep comfortably throughout the journey.
Safety
The thought of hurting your baby during a bike ride is terrifying. Safety is critical to making sure that there are no injuries or accidents during rides. The main consideration you need to make here is the design of the seat. It should have enough straps and safety belts to keep your child in position.
Additionally, the seats need to be well padded to keep your baby safe even during the rough-terrain rides. You do not want them to hurt their backs or limbs in case of sudden stops. Therefore, make sure that the seat is fitted with all the safety requirements before buying it.
Furthermore, you should make sure that the bike seat you are buying fits well on your bike. This will enable you to balance the weight of the baby as you cycle. If need be, take the measurement for your bike and compare it with the seat to be sure.
Comfort
The comfort of your baby is non-negotiable. You want them to enjoy every bit of the ride so that they can develop an interest in cycling too. Depending on how comfortable these rides are, the baby may either love cycling or be reluctant to it. You do not want to destroy your baby’s love for cycling by subjecting them to rough uncomfortable bike rides. Therefore, get a seat that is well designed and has enough arm and body rest space to give them the best experience. If they love certain colors and animations, consider getting them seats with those things.

Clearly having a child should not be the end of your cycling experiences. If you love bikes, you know giving up riding is too much of a price to pay. So, just get a nice bike child seat and go on every ride with your kid.
