Diaper Pails Buying Guide

A new baby brings lots of joy, love and diapers to your life. When you are dealing with dirty diapers at all hours of the day and night, you'll want an easy disposal method. Placing them in your household trash cans will cause the odor to linger, and running back and forth to the trash bin outside is not ideal, especially in inclement weather or at night. A diaper pail will allow you to hygienically store your dirty diapers to keep your house free of odors and minimize your trips outside to the garbage.

With many different options available to you, it can be hard to know where to begin in shopping for a diaper pail. Let this guide help you to understand the different features and styles available, and to make the best choice for you and your growing family.

What is a diaper pail?
A diaper pail is a specially designed trash can that contains the odor of dirty diapers. The lid seals tightly, and typically there is a mechanism to seal off the bottom of the pail from the top where the new diaper is placed in. The pail typically has either a carbon or baking soda filter to help absorb the smell.

Why should I use one?
The biggest reasons to use a diaper pail are convenience and hygienic practices. The diaper pail will prevent frequent trips to the outdoor garbage can, which can be difficult to accomplish with the baby in tow, or in rainy or cold weather. The pail will also contain odors when you throw the diapers away, which a typical garbage can will not do. Additionally, the diaper pail will save on plastic bag waste, since most models can hold a large number of diapers before needing to be taken to the outside garbage can.

When you are shopping for a diaper pail, there are many different styles on the market to cover every need and desire. Nearly all of the characteristics will come down to personal preference. It's important to read reviews of the cans that you are deciding between in order to make the most informed decision. Also, consider the following features to select the one that is right for you and your family.

Diaper pails are made out of several different materials. The most well known brands make their cans out of hard plastic. These cans are fairly quiet to use and tend to be less expensive. However, plastic tends to absorb odors, so over time there is a chance that plastic diaper pails will release more odors into the air.

Other diaper pails are made from stainless steel or other types of metal. These cans will be heavier than their plastic counterparts, though once in place there usually isn't a need to move the can often, if at all. The metal cans also wipe down and resist odors more effectively. They do come with a slightly higher price tag, which may be a factor if you are on a tight budget.

Foot Pedal
Diaper pails with foot pedals have an instant increase in their ease of use factor. Aside from the style of pail that is an open can with individual bags for the diapers, all other cans will be sealed with a lid to keep odors in. A diaper pail with a foot pedal will allow for easy, hands-free access to the can to dispose of the diaper quickly and easily. However, a foot pedal also makes it easy for a crawling baby to open the lid and release the smells or get access to the inside. Therefore, it is important to know whether the model that you are investigating includes this feature.

For diaper pails that utilize filters, the two most common types are carbon and baking soda. The carbon filters use activated charcoal, which absorb odors. Baking soda can also absorb odors, but it has a smaller surface area than carbon. Activated charcoal has a larger surface area that allows more of the the odor molecules to be absorbed into it.

However, depending on the design of the filter in the diaper pails, either substance can be just as effective. In some brands of diaper pails with baking soda filters, some of the baking soda will be sprinkled onto the new dirty diaper each time one is placed into the pail. It is recommended that either type of filter be changed every 30-90 days in order to continue to capture the odor molecules and reduce the smell in and around the diaper pail.

Diaper pails come in a variety of sizes. From a small, open bucket with individual bags for diapers to a large, round stainless steel can, this is an important feature to consider. While you want a can that will hold a lot of diapers, you also want a diaper pail that can fit into a designated space in the nursery or room in which you are storing the can. This is largely a matter of personal preference, as the size of the can does not dictate quality of performance.

While most diaper pails require special bags created just for that can, the design of some allow regular trash bags to be used. The custom bags tend to be more expensive than standard trash bags, but often have better odor absorbing capabilities. Additionally, the custom bags are designed to work within the mechanisms that keep the older dirty diapers away from the lid when it is opened to deposit a fresh diaper. Some bags are also designed to be cut and tied off as bags need to be taken and thrown away, which creates less waste than individual trash bags.

The true price of the diaper pail is calculated by considering not only the can itself, but also the cost of replacement bags and filters. A diaper pail may be relatively inexpensive, but if it requires custom bags and specific filters to be used and replaced regularly, those costs can add up. Some diaper pails can be used with generic versions or off-brands of the bags and filters, which tend to be less expensive and can help reduce your costs. You'll want to factor in the price of all of the components of the diaper pail prior to making your decision.

Most diaper pails are white in order to coordinate well with any nursery or room in which they are placed. However, some come in gray, taupe and even bright pink. If you prefer that your diaper pail has a bit more pizzazz, this may be a feature that weighs into your decision.

Once you've narrowed down the desirable features for your diaper pail, there are several questions that you should keep in mind as you evaluate your options. Be sure to read the reviews for the answers to the following questions:

  • How well do diapers fit in when the bag is nearly full?
Sometimes the mechanism separating the older diapers from the new does not work as well when the can gets close to full. This can lead to smells escaping and difficulty removing the full bag.
  • How easy is it to change the bag?
The last thing that you want to deal after taking out a bag of dirty diapers is fight to put a new bag back in. A diaper pail with bags that are easily dropped in and fed through the mechanisms inside the can will save you precious moments while your baby is fussing.
  • How well does the diaper pail contain odors?
Not all cans are created equal. Some cans may emit smells when the can is opened to dispose of another diaper, and others may have a detectable unpleasant odor even when closed. In addition to paying attention to the type of filter and mechanism for depositing diapers inside the pail, pay careful attention to the reviews.

Regardless of the diaper pail that you choose, you will be glad for the convenience and odor absorption it offers, especially with a new baby on hand.
