Creating Your First Poll

First Steps on StrawPoll
We compiled you a guided list of six easy steps to follow when creating your first poll on StrawPoll.
1.) Choose your question and add possible answers
Create poll step 1
As an example, the above image shows the creation of a poll about favourite movie genres. Of course, you can add more answer options to vote on.
2.) Select your main settings
Create poll step 2
Selecting your settings for your poll can easily forgotten, but it is quite important. At least, it's not bad to know all the options you have. We grouped the poll settings in "main" and "advanced" settings in order to provide the best possibile usability for all use cases. The example above sets the poll "private", which ensures that it is not listed in the "Discover" section and allows the users to select multiple answers at once. The vote duplication check will be performed via IP address (and other secret measurements). In schools or universities, you often have only one single public IP address, making the default poll options not function properly. In this case, you can select the third option, which makes the vote duplication check to be performed via cookie.
3.) Advanced poll settings
Create poll step 3
Clicking the "Advanced Options" button opens a list of more detailed refinement options for your poll. Here you can choose a specific date as your poll deadline. After this date, voting on your poll will not be possible. In addition, you can add an image to your poll header, which will be displayed between your title/description and the poll options. By default, we do block VPN users from voting, because most often, VPN users try to use their service to gain new IPs and therefore, making a vote duplication more difficult. But if you're sure that your voters will not manipulate your poll, feel free to check this option. There may be cases when you only want registered users with a valid email-address to vote on your poll, so there is an option to activate that. If you don't want your voters to be anonymous, you can choose the "Require voters to enter their name" option. With this option, you will have another table on the results page showing who voted for which option. Last but not least, we added a reCAPTCHA v3 check by default in order to minimize fake votes. Users will not have to enter a classic CAPTCHA, but there will be a background check trying to determine of the voter is human or not.
4.) Create and share your poll
Create poll step 4
As soon as you have chosen your poll options, you can hit the "Create Poll" button and will be redirected to your poll page. Besides voting, you can scroll down to see different content boxes like "Share This Poll", "Comments", "Information About This Poll" and your "Admin Panel". Let's start with the first one: Sharing your poll with your participants is the first step to a successful poll. You will provided with a short link, e.g. "https://strawpoll.com/p5pxx1d2", which lets your participants access your poll. You can just press the "Copy Link" button to copy it to your clipboard or have different options to share your poll on social media like Reddit, Twitter and Facebook, as well as messengers like WhatsApp or Telegram.

5.) Manage your poll via your admin panel
Create poll step 5
On the bottom of your poll as well as your poll results page, an admin panel will be shown. Only the creator of a poll will be able to see this section and make changes to your poll. So be careful if you create a poll without a user account: Your admin rights are stored in your cookies and might be deleted with your next browser reset. Having a user account greatly improves to keep the admin rights of your polls kept safe. Nevertheless, as you can see in the example above, you can change public/private visibility of your poll, activate and deactivate the comments section, setting a deadline as well as change how your participants can see the poll results. As an ultimate measure, you can choose to delete your poll if you want to remove it from our platform.
6.) View and analyze results
Create poll step 6
You can always see the poll results in real-time. Just click the "Results" button on your poll page and you will be redirected to a graphic display of the votes on your poll like in the example above. In addition to the list of votes and the pie chart, we provide detailed analytics when and from where your voters voted in your poll. You can find this feature by clicking on the "Open Vote Analytics" on the very bottom of the results page. Then, another window will show up that lists all votes by date (hourly or daily, depending on the duration of your poll) and a list of countries your voters voted from.
Congratulations! You finished this tutorial. Now you can try to create a poll on your own or go back to the first steps overview.
