3.5mm Cable Buying Guide

3.5mm Cable Image
Picture: 3.5mm Male To Male from Mediabridge

Despite manufacturers like Apple phasing out the once-ubiquitous headphone jack, 3.5-millimeter cables are still common. You see these connectors everywhere, from headphones and stereos to cars and home theater systems.

However, not all 3.5-millimeter cables are created equal. Materials, interior construction and the potential for interference can affect the audio these cables deliver. To get the crisp, clear sound you want, you need to find the best cable at the most affordable price without compromising quality.

What Are 3.5-Millimeter Cables Used For?

In the past, 3.5-millimeter cables were the standard for connecting audio devices to other devices and to each other. Even with the introduction of new connector types, there are still many uses for 3.5-millimeter cables, including:

• Connecting headphones to devices • Connecting devices to the auxiliary jack in a car • Connecting devices to an external audio system • Linking components of a stereo together • Plugging speakers into a computer • Patching devices together in a home theater or home music studio • Plugging audio devices into camcorders

You’re most likely to see male connectors on these cables, which is another name for the standard plug found on headphones or audio cable for cars. The female connector is the jack into which a cable can be plugged and is used in 3.5-millimeter adapters. The most common style of cable and the one you’re most likely to need for your audio devices is a patch cable with a male connector at each end.

Types of 3.5-Millimeter cables

Also called “mini-plug” connectors, 3.5-millimeter cables can have different kinds of plugs depending on what the device to which the cable is attached is designed to support. TRS connectors have a single ring on the plug and are used for stereo audio applications.TRRS has two rings to enable support for microphone input. For most common applications, you won’t need to think about whether you’re using a TRS or a TRRS. Devices requiring stereo audio or microphone connectivity will come equipped with the proper connector.

If you browse the audio cables available for sale or read through electronics forums, you may come across the term “audiophile grade.” This refers to the high-end and sometimes pricey cables some people claim provide a better audio experience than less expensive models. Whether or not this is true is up for debate, but if you’re an adamant audiophile looking for the best cable on the market, you have the option of researching these 3.5-millimeter cables.

One type of construction known to improve audio quality is an oxygen-free copper (OFC) core. The process by which this kind of copper is made results in fewer impurities and may minimize signal loss for better overall sound.

The type of plating used on connectors also sets some 3.5-millimeter cables apart. Gold plating has the lowest level of resistance you can get without running the risk of the connector oxidizing. This makes it a popular option for both audio and video cables and the best choice if you’re looking for longevity. Nickel has several times more resistance than gold but is still a good conductor. However, it can corrode over time and cause audio to crackle.

Considerations

Whether or not you’re an audiophile, there are some characteristics you want to look for when shopping for audio cables. These factors make a difference in sound quality and can change the way you experience music in your home or car:

• Conductor plating material • Cable length • Interior conducting materials • Insulation

Low quality or poor construction in any of these components can reduce clarity and signal strength. Long cables require signals to travel farther between devices, creating the potential for signal loss, especially if the cable also lacks adequate insulation.

Insulation keeps signals from escaping the cable as they travel along the core and prevents external signals from causing interference. In a world where everybody has at least one device on them at all times, interference is everywhere and can easily interrupt your audio experience if you rely on substandard cables.

The conductor material inside the cable carries the signal from one end to the other and should offer a low level of resistance. More resistance means less signal strength and lower quality, so most cables use copper as a conductor. Materials such as gold and silver are better conductors but would result in prohibitively expensive 3.5-millimeter cables if used for the entire core.

It’s important to consider how you’ll use your cables and how long you want them to last. You don’t want to spend too much on something you’ll be carrying around in your bag, your pocket or your car’s glove compartment on a regular basis. However, you don’t want to have to replace cables every few months. You also need to make sure your cables are compatible with all your devices. The changes made by some smartphone manufacturers restrict the type and quality of cables you can use and have made certain cables obsolete.

How Much Do 3.5-Millimeter cables Cost?

Prices can vary widely on 3.5-millimeter cables depending on the brand, connector material, core construction and quality. For basic applications where both quality and longevity aren’t major concerns, you can get cables costing $1 or less. Durability may be an issue, and you could find you need to replace these cheaper cables often to continue enjoying clear audio.

Cables used to connect smartphones to cars or other devices start around $5 for standard patch designs. Cables for home theater systems, stereos and similar audio applications tend to run between $5 and $15 unless you need a high-end model for pristine audio. For most uses, however, cables within these price ranges work well and deliver quality sound in a variety of settings.

As a rule of thumb, look for a quality of cable comparable to the quality of your device. If you’re using the cable to listen to podcasts in your car, you may not need anything more than a basic $1 model. For connecting your iPhone to your stereo and jamming to your favorite playlist at parties, you’ll want to invest in something better. If your budget limits your selection, choose the highest quality of cable you can afford.

Best Places to Buy 3.5-Millimeter cables

For the best balance between price and quality, shop around before investing in 3.5-millimeter audio cables. Online outlets like Amazon and eBay have wide selections, so take the time to browse bestsellers, read reviews and research the experiences of others who have used the cables for similar applications.

Some online stores specialize in selling only cables or only audio cables. These niche outlets don’t necessarily have better products than big sellers, but it could be easier to find what you’re looking for if you have a specific cable in mind. Niche sellers may also offer special deals or carry cables you can’t find elsewhere.

Music stores may also have 3.5-millimeter cables appropriate for your needs. Since musicians expect good sound quality, look at these outlets if you’re in the market for high-end audio equipment and want the best possible cable you can buy.

If you need a cable in a hurry and aren’t looking for something specific or special, head to a local electronics store or the electronics department at a big-box store like Wal-Mart or Target. Office supply stores may also stock audio cables if they deal in electronics. Many of these retailers carry audio cables with decent quality at affordable prices.

Use these guidelines as you shop around to find the right audio cables to meet your needs. Keep in mind what you’re going to use the cables for and the level of quality required for a stellar audio experience. Browse different materials within your budget, and choose the best cables you can afford to ensure you’ll be able to enjoy your audio without interference. If you’re willing to take the time to research and compare the options, you’ll find you don’t have to spend a bundle to get a good 3.5-millimeter audio cable.
