Ab Machine Buying Guide

Ab machines are perfect if you're looking to put extra emphasis on your abdominal workouts or if you'd like a machine that's easier and more effective than crunches. There are several different types of ab machines along with products meant for different skill levels. This buying guide will cover the most common types of products within this niche along with important factors that you should consider before spending your money.

Durability and Stability

It's always important to look for products that are durable regardless of what you are buying, but it's especially important with ab machines. You don't want a machine that is going to fall apart as you are on the ground or in the middle of a suspended crunch. This can result in improper movements and injury. You must also make sure that the ab machine is suitable for your weight and size.

Stability is also important. This is in regards to how stable the machine is when you're moving. For example, if the bench or captain's chair is prone to moving around, then it might hurt you. Make sure that the ab machine is able to stay flat on the ground.

Muscle Stimulation

An ab machine isn't going to tone your abs unless it stimulates the muscles. Some machines are made to increase the difficulty of core exercises while others are made to decrease effort. Products that increase effort will rarely have a problem with muscle stimulation.

You may have problems with machines meant to reduce effort. If you have a difficult time with crunches, then you may want a machine that reduces the effort of core exercises so that you can start strengthening the muscles. At the same time, your body will quickly adjust to this and require more muscle stimulation.

If you choose an ab machine that reduces effort and stimulation, then it's best to choose one that has adjustable resistance. This will allow you to increase stimulation as you get stronger.

Size and Mobility

As you will soon see, ab machines come in a variety of sizes. For example, there are ab wheels that are very small and hyper-extension chairs that are large and must be installed in a room. You have to consider how much size you have and how much you are willing to dedicate to exercise equipment.

Weight and mobility may also be important if you travel frequently and want to bring the equipment with you. You can easily bring an ab wheel and some chair models with you, but other equipment is meant to be permanently installed in a room and would be impractical or impossible to move.

Assembly

Do you have the patience to assemble an ab machine, or do you want it to work right out of the box? Many products come already assembled while others may require some work before they are ready to be used. This is largely a matter of preference.

There is really no benefit or drawback to choosing one product over the other outside of the extra time needed to get the product ready for use. Machines that need to be assembled may be a little cheaper than their already assembled counterparts, but even that is just a generalization.

Ab Benches

Benches are one of the most common ab machines as they are effective, easy to assemble and can often be folded and pushed under a bed or placed in a closet. Simple benches have a leather or plastic back that you lay on and a metal pole in the center that raises the bench on an angle. There are also adjustable benches that allow you to raise or lower the incline.

This is a great piece of equipment for working your abs as it gives you a larger range of motion than doing crunches on the floor. The only problem is that you can hurt your back if the exercise is done improperly. These machines are best for those who have some experience with core workouts as it moderately increases effort on your abdominal muscles.

Ab Wheels

These are small wheels with handles that allow you to roll up and down and work both your core and upper body muscles. Ab wheels are very small and light. This makes them perfect if you don't have much room or if you want to bring the equipment with you.

Despite their simple design and small size, these machines are incredibly effective at working your abs. Ab wheels are ideal if you are experienced with core exercises. Beginners may find the movements difficult.

Roman Chairs

Also known as hyper-extension machines, these are advanced units that strengthen both your lower back and your core. They are sturdy machines made from metal that are meant to be assembled and permanently stored in a room. This is not a machine for beginners as it requires extensive control of your core.

There are two ways of using Roman chairs. You can lay on them with your core folded forward. This allows you to pull your weight upward with your back and abs, which works both muscle groups. You can also turn around and use this like an ab bench but with an even larger range of movement.

Captain's Chair

This is the most common ab machine seen in gyms because it is versatile, durable and creates a significant amount of muscle stimulation. They are also called power towers. These machines have armrests that allow you to prop your body in an upright position. You would then pull your legs up to work your core muscles. Some models are also outfitted with pull-up bars and equipment for other exercises.

Captain's chairs require a fair amount of control over your core muscles, so it's recommended that you have some experience with core workouts. They are larger units that must be installed in a room, so they are not good if you want something that you can transport.

Ab Chairs

This is a chair that has been modified to allow for core movement. Some models are built like a regular chair with legs while others are meant to be flat on the ground. In either case, both allow you to move your core back and forth to stimulate the abdominal muscles.

The majority of these products are good for beginners because they are easy to use and typically have low resistance. Try to get an adjustable unit that can keep up with you as your strength improves.

Ab Gliders

These work your abs in a similar fashion to captain's chairs, but they are a little more beginner-friendly. You put your knees on one section and crunch up to work your core muscles. This piece of equipment is polarizing because some people love it while others hate it, but it is effective at working the abs along with the back and shoulders.

Ab gliders are about the size of a small exercise bike, so they should be easy to fit in tight spaces.

Ab Rollers

These machines have two curved bars and a neck rest. You'll find that ab rollers reduce the effort required for a crunch because you can push your hands against the bars to give you extra leverage. This is a good piece of equipment for beginners or the elderly as it gives you a significant amount of support.

Ab rollers are light and easy to store. The only problem is that they don't work well if you are experienced with core workouts since there is minimal muscle stimulation.

Conclusion

There are many different ab machines available and each has its own set of pros and cons. In general, you should look for a durable unit that is stable, works with your skill level and is either easy to assemble or comes already assembled. You should also consider how much room you have and if you want the machine to travel with you. After that, picking the right ab machine should be easy.
