Acoustic Foam Buying Guide

Acoustic forms are materials that are developed in such a way they help in soundproofing a room, especially a studio. They soundproof a room either through sound absorption or through diffusion where they move sound to the next room that has a low concentration of sound waves. They are usually made of polyethylene or other organic products. Acoustic forms are mostly used in places such as churches, cinema halls, classrooms, recording studios, and auditoriums among others. These materials come in different colors and shapes so that one can choose what they would like. Role of Acoustic Forms

1. Enhance Sound Quality

Acoustic forms deal with both high and low pitch making them moderate such that individuals can receive the sound without any problems. The shape through which they are cut, such as square shapes, egg tray shapes, pyramid shapes, and wedge play a significant role in enhancing the sound produced in the rooms. They also streamline the sound waves such that no echo mostly comes after sound bounces back. The large surface area mounted on the wall or ceiling absorbs dissipating sound waves and sound energy from producing excessive noise in the room.

2. Soundproofing Through Absorption

One of the characteristics of sound waves is that they can pass through the smallest opening and move out to unwanted zones. This means that the sound becomes noise to other parties outside the room or venue where the sound is originating. To prevent this, acoustic forms absorb all the sound energy and contain it in the room where it is required hence not making noise to the surrounding individuals. Noise is also reduced by ensuring that background sounds are eliminated making the sound to have a smooth sound.

3. Improve Design

One of the silent benefits of acoustic forms is that they improve the appearance of the room and its design. Studios and church halls that are fitted with colorful and well-designed acoustic forms look beautiful and appealing to the people inside, mainly when a beautiful acoustic form covers the concrete wall. Moreover, acoustic forms help the room to maintain its warmth during the cold periods or in places where temperatures are low. Large halls that are cold due to massive air spaces are fitted with acoustic forms to improve the sound while at the same time conserving heat.

Acoustic forms are broadly categorized into;  Wedge Acoustic Forms  Pyramid Acoustic Forms  Square Grid Acoustic Forms  Quadratic Residue Acoustic Forms
The following are some of the critical factors to consider before buying acoustic forms.

1. Patterns on the Surface

Acoustic forms come with a different appearance on their surfaces. The differences are brought about by the shape on the surface of the form which can either be a wedge, pyramid, and egg tray shapes. These designs are designed so that an individual can select what he or she wants rather than a similar pattern on the design that can prove to be annoying to many individuals. It is worth noting that the market has some acoustic forms that have a dull surface but patterned acoustic are considered more aesthetic. Patterns are directed towards the sound source as they play a critical role in soundproofing and improving the sound produced by the device being used. The problem with the patterns is that they collect dust, especially on the corners of the wedges where you will be required to clean regularly for optimum performance.

• Wedge Acoustic Form

This panel has its surfaces having the shape of wedges that are stuck to its base so that it can portray a polarized design. It only absorbs and regulates the sound through a single direction due to the position of the wedges. The wedges are positioned such that they are perpendicular to the sound source to enhance maximum performance.

Benefits of Wedge Acoustic forms  It prevents the reflection of sound waves within the room  It has a maximum absorption of sound waves as compared to other acoustic forms.  It is instrumental in the removal of room modes and undesirable artifacts.

2. The color of Acoustic Form

Although the color of the acoustic form you will choose does not affect the sound absorption and soundproofing, it plays a critical role in determining the design of the room. This means that you should consider the color before deciding the panel that you would select for your room. Churches, classrooms, and other public rooms have plain colors while a private house and a music production studio may have any color however flashy it is so that it can meet the needs and preferences of the user.

3. Thickness and Density

Acoustic forms are available in the market at different material thickness. It is in the public domain that a thicker material with a high density is better as compared to a less thick material with low density. A denser acoustic form provides a large surface area upon which sound is absorbed for soundproofing purposes. Every time you are considering buying a form panel, consider purchasing a thicker one as it has proved to be effective as compared to the one with a thinner panel. It is also worth noting that thicker panels can absorb low-frequency waves. However, it is worth understanding that thicker panels might not always be good for you. For example, thicker panels might not be very effective for your studio but are very effective for your home office. This is because only sounds with higher pitch are produced in the recording studio while a home office has sounds with low-pitch.

• Aurex Acoustic Forms

This is an acoustic form with the wedged surface. It is highly preferred for record studios as it has a moderate thickness and density, which makes it absorb both high and low-frequency. The wedges in the in this form are positioned to face the speakers producing the sound for effective performance.

Pros  It is readily available at affordable costs  It does not catch fire easily which makes it effective where precautionary measures are required  It has smaller panels that are helpful when it comes to placement options  It offers excellent performance to record studios
Cons  It cannot be used in the home office because it has low-frequency absorption

4. Noise Reduction Rating (NRC)

Noise reduction rating is a measure of how much sound waves a specific acoustic form can be able to absorb soundproof. It is worth highlighting that acoustic panels are made such that there is a level of sound that they cannot be able to absorb or soundproof. Acoustic forms with higher noise reduction rating will offer significant support in the amount of the sound they can absorb while the low rating forms will deaden low sounds. The amount of sound produced within your room will determine the noise reduction rating that you would require. Record studios need form panels with a high noise reduction rating while offices may require forms with low noise reduction rating.

• Mybecca Studio Forms

This is an example of an acoustic form that is preferred in record studios due to the high noise rating. This means that it absorbs and soundproofs rooms that produce much noise so that they cannot disturb the surrounding environment.

Pros  It is excellent for large rooms as it is wide  Eliminates standing waves  Helps produce clear sound  Removes echoes in the room  It has a high NRC rating

Cons  It is not affordable for people with limited budgets  It has wedges which sometimes accumulate dust much dust

5. Acoustic Form Size

Size is an essential factor that you should consider every time you want to buy an acoustic form. These form panels come in different sizes and shapes. The size of your room you want to soundproof will determine the size you will need. Churches, classrooms, and other large public halls need large acoustic forms while small rooms such as home offices need small acoustic forms. Although you might not get the most extensive panel out there, you might be forced to buy several panels so that they can fit your room. It is important to note that the number of panels you buy will determine the noise levels in your room. Small panels are recommended because you can quickly fix them on the wall or ceilings.
