Animal Trap Buying Guide

Have you started noticing havoc and damage to your yard? If so, it might be time to purchase an animal trap. Trapping an animal does not always imply hurting the animal but simply relocating it instead. Animal traps are contingent upon the size of the animal you are handling. Even though you are attempting to rid your home of the nuisances the wild animals cause, you will still want to ensure the animal is either in a safe enclosure with proper room or quickly killed so it doesn't suffer.

Identify Your Type of Animal Problem

Before selecting an animal trap to buy, you have a few considerations to sort through. First, you should determine or formulate your best guess on the type of animal you're encountering.

If you are noticing gnaw marks on barks or little tunnels in your yard, you're most likely handling a type of rodent. Rodents can be safely enclosed in an x-small sized animal trap.

Squirrels are usually harmless but can cause damage to your yard or garden. They typically nibble on flowers, dig holes, and occasionally chew on outdoor wooden furniture. To capture a squirrel, you will need a small sized animal trap.

Because rabbits will eat nearly anything, identifying them as the culprit can be challenging. Rabbit damage can be observed through 45-degree angled cuts on the bottoms of leaves or stems. If you are looking to ensnare a rabbit, you should purchase a medium sized animal trap.

Raccoons are infamous for tipping over trashcans to rummage through the trash for a snack. You will want to be cautious since they often have aggressive tendencies. Capturing them requires a large sized trap.

If the tops of your plants have been eaten, you are likely dealing with a deer-sized animal. This type of animal damage can be seen as high as six feet up the plant. Deer-sized animals will need an x-large sized animal trap.

You want to purchase a trap that allows the majority of the animal's body to fit inside before approaching the trigger plate. Additionally, you don't want a trap that provides a lot of space for the animal to move around. Before purchasing an animal trap you must understand that size matters!

After acknowledging the type of animal you are fighting, you will be able to recognize which particular features you need in an animal trap.

The Most Important Qualities to Consider

As you search for animal traps, you need to consider the most important qualities first and foremost. The most crucial qualities to address are:

  • Design
  • Size
  • Safety
  • Durability

While design and size are dependent upon the circumstances and animal, safety is nonnegotiable. You don't want to cause the animal to severely suffer while trapping them. Therefore, you need to purchase a trap with safety features. Design is based on not only personal preference, but it's also contingent upon the type of animal you're handling. For comfort and safety, you will need to consider an appropriate size for your animal trap. Durability is an important quality to keep the animal confined while also withstanding severe wear and tear. With these qualities in mind, you can narrow down the type of features that are most helpful in tackling the situation.

The Numerous Features Found in Animal Traps

Different features accommodate different needs. Depending on the size of the animal, type of animal, and your circumstance, you will need to surf through a wide range features to determine which closely target your situation. A variety of beneficial animal trap features are as follows:

  • Gravity action door
  • Rust-resistant wire mesh
  • Mesh openings
  • Sensitive triggers
  • Humane trap
  • Sliding back doors
  • Carrying handle
  • Usability variety

Gravity action doors safely fall after the animal enters without harming the animal. If you wish to release it, these type of doors don't clamp down or harm the animal.

Rust-resistant wire mesh provides breathability for the animal. Since it resists rust, the trap has a long-lasting quality that can endure multiple uses. Ensure that you properly clean the trap after each use.

Similar to rust-resistant wire mesh, mesh openings are crucial to traps for breathability and visibility. You need to be able to observe the animal that is trapped. If your intention is to not harm the animal, then it might soothe the animal to be able to see the outdoor surroundings.

Sensitive triggers are crucial in an animal trap. They ensure a quick, secure capture of the wild animal. Triggers that aren't sensitive can allow the animal to outsmart it or could result in severely harming the animal unintentionally. Certain traps feature the trigger rod on the outside of the trap, which causes no harm or damage to you or the animal.

Whether your intention is to kill or relocate the animal, you need to purchase a humane animal trap. Some traps brutally murder animals, while others quickly kill the animal without it suffering. If your goal is to rid the animal from harming your yard or home instead of for hunting purposes, it might be best to purchase a trap that allows you to relocate and release instead of kill.

Sliding back doors are also beneficial features. These doors permit easy baiting and simple release. Rear doors allow you to sneak up on the animal to prevent scaring them and to prevent them from harming you as they exit.

A carrying handle is an excellent feature. It provides easy transportation of the animal and trap without causing harm to both you and the animal.

Usability is more of a convenient feature for you and might spare you money. Many traps can be used not only outdoors but also in attics and basements. Purchasing a trap that can be used in various places renders it more effective long term.

Most Common Types of Animal Traps: Humane or Inhumane?

Certain traps are illegal in many countries and states because of their cruelty to animals. Even to kill an animal, there are traps that allow a quick, more humane death. The traps that simply allow you to relocate and release are obviously the most humane. With that being said, what type of traps are there?

  • Live traps
  • Snares
  • Conibear traps
  • Steel-jaw leghold traps
  • Deadfall traps
Live traps are similar to cages. These are most humane because they promote relocation and release. Typically, most live traps can be used on land or in buildings. Havahart's live cages are among some of the most humane, effective animal traps. Their products also offer gravity action doors and other beneficial advantages. This trap might be best if you don't want to harm the animal and simply move it away from your yard, garden, or home.

Many have begun ruling out snare traps since strangulation is considered a cruel way to kill an animal. Snares typically capture either the animal's body, neck, or foot. The more an animal struggles, the tighter the noose becomes. This type of trap often causes the animal to suffer a long, painful death.

Conibear traps cause quicker deaths than other traps such as snares. They are full body traps intentionally designed to kill the animal quickly. It's created to snap like scissors on the animal's spinal column at the base of the skull. However, animal size and direction of entrance differs, which instead of instantly killing the animal, it severely punctures it. When this occurs, the animal suffers a prolonged death instead of quickly dying. To ensure that the conibear trap would be humane, consider the size of the animal you're intending to trap. Body-gripping traps like the conibear are designed specifically to kill in a quick, humane way. This trap in particular, after size is considered, might be the best trap to kill an animal humanely.

Steel-jaw leghold traps are the type of traps illegal in many states and countries due to animal cruelty. Leg traps are commonly used, but undoubtedly cause severe suffering for the animal. It will ensnare its leg, and the animal will fight vigorously to free itself. These traps cause fractures, shredded tendons, edema, amputations, significant blood loss, mouth damage (for trying to chew it off), and eventually starvation.

Deadfall traps are also considered inhumane by many. While the death with this trap would be quicker than death by a leghold trap, the deadfall trap collapses on the animal and crushes its body. A deadfall is often a heavy rock or log that's held up and collapses when the animal hits the trigger. The rock or log must be at least five times heavier than the animal. Deadfall traps would be recommended before a leghold trap since the death is quicker.

Final Thoughts

With the animal and situation in mind, you can identify what type of trap and feature you need to purchase. There are humane traps that allow relocation and traps that promote quick killing. Keep in mind the animal's suffering if you intend to kill. Identify the problem to assess which type of animal you're handling. Use a rough estimate on the size to purchase a trap. After considering which features are most important for your problem, you can buy a trap that eliminates the animal's damage without causing it to severely suffer.
