Architect Lamp Buying Guide

Architect Lamp Image

You don’t have to be an architect to need a great lamp. Architect style lamps are excellent task lamps for whatever type of close work you’re doing. They offer a vast spectrum of bright light that eases eye strain and is adjustable so you can place it how you need it.

Buying one should be easy because they’re all the same, right? Not quite. There are a few things you’ll want to consider if you're going to get the architect best lamp for your needs. Let’s take a look.

How To Choose The Right Architect Lamp

Not all lamps are created equal. Here are some factors you’ll want to consider before making your final decision.

Task Lighting

Overhead lights, even bright ones, aren’t good at concentrating light exactly where you need it. The room may feel very bright, but when you’ve been at your desk for hours that light isn’t going to be enough.

Light diffused over an entire room doesn’t entirely illuminate your task the way you need if you’re going to spend hours staring in a confined space. That’s where a task light comes in.

Task lighting can be anything and located anywhere, but in the case of an architect lamp, it’s going to direct bright light right over your workspace. That extra illumination will be the difference between tired eyes after hours of work, and less tired eyes. You aren’t going to beat eye fatigue completely, but you can head it off with the right concentrated light.

Amount Of Light

Older eyes need more light. In fact, 50-year-olds need twice the amount of light as 25-year-olds. Your age is important when you’re choosing brightness. The other side of that is that older eyes are also more sensitive to glare, so it isn’t going to work to get the brightest light available.

You need a lamp that can control the light direction to avoid that glare. Architect style lamps are suitable for this because they concentrate that bright light directly onto your workspace instead of spreading it around (and getting it into your eyes, which is counterproductive to the brightness)

Some lamps also come with a dimmer switch so you can manually adjust the brightness for different things. If you’re using the lamp in the same room as your partner, you can control the light at night, for example, so it doesn’t disturb your partner’s sleep. During the day, you can turn it up as the ambient light of the room gets brighter.

Size

If you’re drawing huge floor plans on a desk, you may want a lamp with a long arm that can reach across to exactly where you’re working. You get a lot of flexibility with a long arm, but you’ll need a comparably heavy base or large clip to counteract the extra weight.

If your desk is small and you’re working or reading in a confined space, a huge lamp is going to be cumbersome. Going smaller saves your already precious space without sacrificing your light.

Angle

The light should never be directly in your eyes. Your architect lamp should adjust to a 30-degree angle wherever you are working so that it directs the most considerable amount of light onto your work or reading and not into your eyes. If your lamp gives off glare or is in your direct line of vision, you’re going to have more eye fatigue as your eyes try to adjust. Too much overhead and you’ll get shadows, especially your own.

Type of Light

Flickering causes a lot of eye strain, so lamps that have built-in flickering protection are best for tasks where you’re concentrating for long periods of time. LED lights are an energy efficient, bright style of bulb that cuts down further on that flickering.

It’s also good if you have brightness settings or dimmer switches built into the lamp itself so you can adjust based on your own needs. If you find your concentration prevents you from realizing that you should adjust the light, some modern lamps have sensors that detect the ambient light of the room for you and adjust accordingly. No breaks in your concentration!

Some lamps have color temperature modes for adjusting to certain tasks as well. Changing the temperature helps light feel more natural for specific times of day, illuminating certain types and colors of materials, and for your own personal preference. You know how fluorescent lights make you feel nauseous? If you could adjust the temperature, you’d probably be more comfortable.

Halogen Versus LED

Most task lighting is either Halogen or LED. The most significant difference between the two doesn’t have anything to do with the amount of light they produce and everything to do with temperature. Halogen gets hot. Hot, hot, hot. If you have kids around, or you work with a smaller lamp close to parts of your body, you (or they) are likely to be in for a nasty surprise accidentally touching it after it’s been on a while. LED remains cool to the touch.

LED lasts a lot longer too. Halogen’s typical lifespan is a respectable 2,000 hours, but LED lasts a whopping 50,000 on average. LED also has more range because the fixture doesn’t have to be as large for the same amount of light. Halogen is beautiful light, but LED is probably your best choice.

Clamp Or Base

The style of support depends a lot on your space and your preference. If you don’t want to bother with difficult adjustments, or your desk doesn’t have a proper lip for clamps, a solid base allows you to pick the lamp up and set it down where you need it.

If you’re working with plans or specs, the base may interfere with your line of vision. Clamps work well with drawing tables and other styles of architect tables because they clamp onto the edge of the desk without interfering with the materials you’re using. The downside is that they won’t work with all workspaces and they may damage the finish of a desk.

Style

You can’t leave out your own personal style. Architect lamps come in a variety of finishes (not just polished steel or black metal like the past) They have modern looks or vintage looks. They are small and large.

You know your style best, so it shouldn’t be difficult to find the right type of architect lamp in the style you choose. Just keep in mind that the function of the lamp is to preserve your delicate eyes, so don’t sacrifice that for a particular style.

The Takeaway

You need a task lamp if you spend any amount of time concentrating your eyes on a task. Even in bright rooms, the light from an architect light can transform your workspace and save your eyesight.
