Army Boot Buying Guide

Picture: Footwear Men's from Smith & Wesson

For generations, Army boots have been engineered for ultimate performance in a wide range of extreme conditions. Whether you are an active service member, or just work and play hard, footwear that’s designed for superior safety, comfort and durability can be a literal life saver.

From wet jungles and dry desserts to rugged mountain terrain, there’s an Army boot that can handle it, but even the highest quality boots can let you down if they’re not the right ones for the job. Before making this important investment, consider how Army boots are made and which of these features are right for you.

Boot Basics

All boots have a basic set of parts in common, but made with a variety of materials and features unique for the climate and terrain where they will be used.

This is the entire top part of the boot from the sole up and it’s here that the choice of materials makes the biggest impact on the boot’s weight, comfort and durability.

Thick, full-grain leather is considered the gold standard for durability, stability and water resistance, but it makes a heavy, inflexible boot that isn’t breathable in hot climates and when wet, can take hours to dry. For heavy terrain climbers who need solid ankle support or anyone in danger of have a boot perforated by a sharp object, leather is a dependable choice, but look for any advantage that will help you keep your feet cooler and drier, such as moisture-wicking socks. Alternatively, Nubuck, a soft brushed leather similar to suede, offers the same durability, but is generally more flexible and easier to break in. If appearance matters, however, Nubuck isn’t forgiving to stains and is harder to clean. Synthetic materials, such as nylon, polyester and canvas are significantly lighter and dry much faster, but can wear out quickly and may not provide as much ankle and leg support, while split-grain leather uppers try to harness the best of both materials in a combination of durable leather with synthetic fabric panels to improve overall ventilation.

Soles are made of three layers — the insole, midsole and outsole. The insole is the layer closest to the foot. It’s replaceable and offers an extra dimension in personalized comfort that allows the wearer to use the style that comes with the boot or choose from a range of specialty insoles that offer different options for different feet. Whether they’re custom made for your foot or available over the counter, when they wear out or your needs change, just swap them out for a new pair and the boots will feel like new.

The midsole is considered the support layer and absorbs shock with movement. The better the midsole, the less punishment your lower back, hips and knees take. Midsoles are not replaceable and come in two material choices, ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) and polyurethane. Polyurethane soles are the most durable, but are firm and not particularly flexible. Once common, they’ve yielded somewhat to more modern EVA soles that are as comfortable as your favorite athletic shoes, but wear a little faster.

The outsoles are the part of the boot that hits the ground. Most are made of thick rubber and feature a variety of lug patterns designed to provide traction on a wide range of surfaces while they protect the foot from hard objects. Outsoles are often equipped with special features such as lug designs that help stop sliding on downward slopes or in thick mud.

Boot Function

Whether you’re in the jungle, desert, or mountains, you need a boot that is designed to handle the climate and terrain.

Jungle boots need to be lightweight and breathable to combat the heat and moisture-related infections, while offering protection from forest floor debris. For hot, moist climates, look for boots with upper made from sturdy, but light fabrics with vent holes that allow air to circulate and water to drain to drain out. Moisture issues in the jungle are caused more by sweat than water, so avoid waterproof boots that prevent sweat from evaporating. Most jungle boots today come with a rapid lacing feature that allows the user to remove wet boots more often for cleaning and drying. It’s not a must, but it can keep you comfortable when it counts.

For hot, but dry climates, boots should emphasize breathability and features that limit heat retention. Choose a light-colored boot and avoid steel toes unless the added protection is a must — they retain heat and add unnecessary weight.

Cold Weather

Nothing is more important in a cold weather boot than insulation. Natural insulation such as shearling and wool have their merits, but have very limited durability and require care that is impractical in many situations.

Synthetic insulation is now ubiquitous, but use caution when choosing an insulation level. Be sure to understand the manufacturer’s warmth rating system and consider breathability as well. In cold, dry temperatures, waterproofing isn’t always necessary and can cause moisture-related foot infections. For work in snow and slush, look for an insulated boot with a lining that is both waterproof and breathable.

The most important aspect of choosing boots is fit. Even the highest quality materials and ideal features are no match for a poor fit that can cause day-ending abrasions and blisters. When trying boots on, wear the sock you typically wear to assess fit. You should be able to maneuver in them without discomfort or feeling your feet slip inside.

Look for a snug fit around the ankle and enough room in the toe box to wiggle your toes without pressure. All boots have a breaking-in period, but that is to achieve the maximum customized fit. If the boots are uncomfortable when you try them on, leave them behind.

Service Compliant Boots

For those in active service, each branch of the military has its own set of minimum criteria for boots, but unit commanders can require a higher standard. Before making a purchase, check with your leadership to ensure your boots will be acceptable.

Other Features

Some of these features are like the difference between a Chevy and a Cadillac, but when it comes to taking care of your feet, a little luxury can make a big difference. When choosing boots, look for these special features and other considerations:

- Heel loops that allow lace ends to be secured to the back of the boot - Odor and moisture controlling insoles - Padded collars and tongues - NATO eyelets that speed lacing and improve fit - Special abrasion-resistant linings - Electrical shock-resistant properties - Comfort guarantee

Ultimately, a good pair of boots made for the right conditions may be all that stands between you and bad day. Take stock in what the manufacturers have to offer and choose a pair — or two — that will treat your feet as well as you want them to treat you.
