Baby Food Maker Buying Guide

There are so many great reasons to buy a baby food maker. They can help you know for certain what goes into your baby's food, as well as save you lots of money. Plus, it always gives you some extra bragging points at the next parents' day meet up! Whatever reasons you may have for wanting to purchase a baby food maker, we've put together this extensive guide to help you choose one that will be perfect for you and your family!

The Advantages of Making Baby Food at Home

Taking the time to research what baby food maker would be perfect for you is the first step in the right direction. And while you obviously have some reason in mind for looking, there may be advantages that you haven't even thought of! There are tons of advantages to making your own baby food at home.

- It saves money. A lot of it. When you buy baby food in the store, it can really add up. On average, American babies will eat about 600 jars of store-bought baby food. If you've looked at the prices, you know that's a pretty penny!

- You don't have to worry about not knowing what's in your baby's food. When you go with store-bought baby foods, you're never 100% sure what's in it. There's no real standard for what goes into what flavors. For example, if you were to get a citrus-based jar of baby food, you may not know what fruits or veggies went into actually making it. To make the food taste even halfway decent, all sorts of sugars and chemicals are added to the food. And that doesn't even account for all the preservatives that must be added to make it have a long shelf life.

- You allow for a bigger variety of food in your baby's diet when you make it at home rather than buying the jars at the store. There truly is no limit to what you can use to make your own baby food at home. This makes it so much easier to ensure that your baby has a healthy, well-balanced diet. You can even specially blend them to mix and pair well together for extra yummy meals for your little one!

- When you make baby food at home, you also ensure it contains more nutritional value than its store-bought counterparts. While the fact that homemade stuff is typically fresher and free of preservatives, some baby food makers have the ability to steam food which can help it retain all of the nutrients.

- Homemade baby food is so much more fresh than what you can buy in the store. This not only helps with taste but with nutritional value, as well. Not to mention it also means that the food your feed to baby is "clean".

- Baby can enjoy eating the same dinner as the rest of the family. Some studies suggest that keeping baby on the same dinner plan as the rest of the family can actually help avoid the dreaded "picky eater" mentality!

The Drawbacks of Making Baby Food at Home

However awesome it is to make your own baby food at home, of course, nothing is perfect. It does have its downsides. Here are a few things that might cause you a little grief when it comes to making baby food at home.

- You have to dedicate time to actually making the food, even if you've had a busy day and might not feel up to doing a little extra, especially for such a small amount of food.

- It can also bog down convenience, especially if your family does a lot of traveling. DIY baby food is usually a little more bulky, not as well-sealed, and needs to be kept at certain temperatures.

- Having said that, it must be refrigerated. The homemade version of baby food can spoil pretty quickly, meaning that you must store it in the fridge for immediate use and freezer for more long-term use. This can take up a lot of space and you have to keep up with labeling out "made on" dates.

- It takes practice to make it taste great. Store-bought baby foods can taste better than your first couple of attempts due to all of the additives and sugar that companies add to it. If you pick unripened fruits and veggies to work with or pair it with the wrong partner, it can really taste disastrous.

Do You HAVE to Make Baby Food at Home

Parents can get a little crazy when it comes to how to care for kids. And much like with breastfeeding versus bottle feeding, everyone has an opinion on homemade baby foods versus the store-bought stuff. The truth is obvious: Of course, you don't have to make your own baby food at home. While many people think the benefits outweigh the convenience, even some who choose to make baby foods at home will supplement with the store-bought stuff. Even if you decide to give your baby nothing but store-bought baby food, it won't be the end of the world. It's perfectly acceptable to pick up store-bought baby food and your little one will grow up perfectly healthy.

How Long Does Homemade Baby Food Last

We won't lie - not as long as the store-bought stuff, for sure! with proper storage, it can last up to 3 months. Though most baby food makers will come with guides and instructions, the general rule is that homemade baby food will last 3 months in the freezer. Just stick the food you want to feed to your baby in the fridge and let it thaw out overnight.

Is a Baby Food Maker a Must for Making Baby Food at Home?

No way! Baby food makers simply make the job a ton easier. Depending on brand and model, they will often come with instructional guides, recipes, containers, portion recommendations, and so much more. However, they are considered a luxury or convenience item for parents. You can honestly use everything from food processors to your own bare hands to create homemade baby food recipes. Some parents even choose to use blenders and mash the rest with their hands or rolling pin and a zip-lock bag.

Making Baby Food at Home Benefits More Than Just Baby

There are actually a few benefits to making baby food at home. We'll start with the obvious first!

- Your baby will receive a lot of health benefits for a variety of reasons. From fresher foods to fewer ingredients, your baby will get a lot of health benefits just from consuming homemade baby food.

- Your wallet will also thank you for all the financial benefits of making your own baby food at home. Given that the store-bought stuff can cost about $1.50 per pouch and the average baby consumes about 600 units of baby food during their early years, making baby food at home can save you nearly a grand on average.

- The benefits don't end there, however. You can also feel a little better about your carbon footprint thanks to the environmental benefits making baby food at home provides. This is because - whether you choose to use glass jars or small plastic containers - when you reuse your baby food containers, you skip out on tossing out pouches, jars, and packaging associated with the store-bought stuff!

Manual Versus All-in-One Machines

One of the biggest things you'll need to consider is whether you want a manual or all-in-one baby food maker.

- Manual baby food makers are a little more hands-on than their all-in-one cousins. That's because you'll need to roast or steam baby's food before pureeing it. It's not a huge deal, but it can factor in if you've got time concerns.

- All-in-one baby food makers are a lot more convenient for parents of multiples or those who keep busy schedules. They're much more hands-off and can make baby food much more easily. However, they do come with their own set of pros and cons.

Pros include:

- The fact that there is no pre-cooking required. All-in-one baby food makers will take care of it all. You'll simply need to wash and peel the fruits and veggies, then toss them into the food maker with some water. In almost no time, you have ready-to-eat baby purees.

- It saves a lot of time and is much more convenient. That's in part because you don't have to really prepare or pre-cook the food, and partly because you don't have to carefully watch to ensure you aren't overcooking the veggies.

Cons include:

- All-in-one baby food makers tend to be larger than their manual counterparts, meaning that they can take up valuable countertop space.

- Clean up can be a lot more intensive than with a manual baby food maker. That's because it has more parts that will actually touch the food, meaning that you'll have to ensure each of those parts are thoroughly cleaned before each use.

- Another downside can be the cost, as all-in-ones are typically more expensive than manuals. If you're already stretching your budget to accommodate a baby food maker, an all-in-one may not be the best choice for you.

Things to Consider When Shopping for Your Baby Food Maker

Electric or manual

Believe it or not, you can actually still get a manual baby food maker. They're typically much cheaper but require a lot more effort to use. Electric baby food makers are typically much more efficient and quick and they take less effort, making them worth more.

Easy to clean & dishwasher safe

You're already getting a baby food maker to make life a little easier - so why stop when it comes to the cleanup end of it? Having a baby food maker that won't show smudges, easily assembles and disassembles, and is dishwasher safe can save you a ton of stress and time.

BPA-Free

By now, every parent has probably heard of the potentially dangerous "Bisphenol A" or "BPA" that lurks in many food-related plastics such as food storage containers. While the jury is still out if it actually causes harm to humans, the theory has kicked up enough dust to consider going the BPA-free route.

Sturdy & trustworthy materials

While you may want a sturdy baby food maker so it will last longer, choosing a well-made food marker with unbreakable materials is good for more than just longevity. If any part of the baby food maker were to break off and get into baby's food, it would be extremely dangerous. So quality really does count when choosing the right baby food maker for your baby.

Type of baby food maker

There are a plethora of varieties when it comes to baby food makers. From electric to manual, electric to not, even food makers that will cook, grind, puree, and mash! Finding what works best for your baby and your budget is possibly the most important thing to look for when buying a baby food maker.

Affordability

Know how much you want to spend before you go hunting for a great baby food maker. Keep in mind that this is likely something you will only use for about 6 months (unless you plan on having more children in the future). Brand doesn't always dictate quality, and neither does price. You don't have to go all in to choose a great food maker for baby. Pick your budget then do research on brands and models that fit your budget. Don't break the bank and add to stress to get the fanciest or most expensive model.

There's a lot that goes into choosing the perfect baby food maker for you. Which means (and new parents, we're talking to you!) you really can't go wrong.
