Baby Formula Buying Guide

Baby Formula Image
Picture: Toddler Formula from Baby's Only

Providing nourishment for your infant is one of the most important jobs as a parent. If you do not want to breastfeed, or are unable to, formula will be your baby's primary source of nutrition for the first year of her life. With so many brands and types of formula on the market, how do you decide which is the right fit for your infant? Here is a guide to help you select the best formula for your baby.

What are the different consistencies of baby formula?

Baby formula comes in three different formats: powder, liquid concentrate, and ready-to-feed liquid. The powdered version needs to be mixed with water prior to feeding the baby, and has the most servings per container. The liquid concentrate also requires mixing with water prior to giving it to your infant. It has fewer servings than the powdered formula, but is typically less messy to prepare. The ready-to-feed formula comes in a container with multiple servings that simply need to be poured when needed, or pre-portioned bottles with an attachable nipple for instant and easy feeding. This is the most expensive type of formula, but the easiest to use.

What is formula made of?

Standard baby formula is made from cow's milk protein. For babies with cow's milk or lactose allergies, there are specialty formulas made from soy. Hydrolosate formulas can be used for babies with allergies to both cow's milk and soy.

What should I look for when buying baby formula?

All formulas are safe for babies to consume, and similar from a nutritional standpoint. However, some formulas might work better for your specific feeding situation than others. To get started with shopping for baby formula, consider the following factors as you compare the products on your local pharmacy shelves:

  • Brand
If your baby can tolerate cow's milk protein, there are many brands of formula available to you. In addition to standard baby formula brands that can be purchased anywhere, large nationwide retailers also carry their own brands that tend to cost less. If your baby has more specialized needs due to an allergy or other digestive issues, you will have fewer brands available to you.

  • Ingredients

As mentioned above, there are a variety of formulas to meet the diverse needs of babies with allergies and difficulty digesting traditional formulas. Liquid formulas tend to be less likely to constipate babies, so this may also be something that determines the type of formula that you purchase. If your child has a known concern, or her pediatrician recommends a specific ingredient, be sure to check the labels to find one that is safe for your baby.

  • Price

Having a baby is expensive, and feeding them is no exception. Formula costs can add up quickly, especially for those on a limited budget. Powdered cow's milk formulas tend to be the cheapest, while specialized liquid formulas are the most expensive. Big brands are also going to be more expensive than generic versions. However, many of the larger brands mail formula checks that can help reduce the cost of their product, so these can still be an option for your baby even if you have a limited amount to spend. Additionally, health insurance may help to offset costs if your baby requires specialized formula for health reasons. Consider the ingredients most appropriate for your baby and choose the formula that best fits within your budget.

  • Ease of Use

In addition to cost, the ease of preparing and portioning the formula may factor into the specific product that you end up purchasing. Powdered formula must be mixed with water, which can become complicated when preparing bottles while traveling. Though tap water can be used if the water source is safe, the water may need to be boiled or from a bottle in order for the formula to be safe for your baby's consumption. This can add an additional cost and/or step to the process of feeding your baby. Liquid formulas can be used instantly with no preparation, particularly the ready-to-feed products, but will cost significantly more per serving. While the decision to use powder or liquid can be determined by the baby's needs, it is often a personal preference in weighing the cost of the product versus the ease of it's use.

    Other Considerations

While it may be tempting to stock up on one type of formula to save money or reduce the number of shopping trips, your baby's needs may change over time. The following considerations should be taken when purchasing, storing and monitoring the intake of your baby's formula.

  • Storing the Formula

All types are formula are shelf stable prior to opening and have an expiration date after which the product should be thrown away. Liquid formulas should be refrigerated after opening and used within 24 hours. Powdered formula should be stored in a cabinet or on the counter to prevent clumping.

  • Preparing Bottles

Mixing formula into bottles ahead of time can save you precious moments when your baby is hungry and fussing, especially for powdered and liquid concentrate formulas. It's important to know how long bottles can be stored safely, though, in order to maintain safe feeding practices and avoid waste. Once mixed with water, powdered formulas should be refrigerated and used within 24 hours. You can prepare enough bottles of formula for the day, but you should not mix formula for feedings beyond that. Bottles made from liquid concentrate or containing ready-to-feed liquid formula should also be stored in the refrigerator and used within 48 hours. The liquid formulas allow you to prepare much further in advance. Any mixed or ready-to-feed formula should be discarded after one hour at room temperature.

  • Heating Bottles

Formula does not need to be warmed, and many infants will drink a bottle cold or at room temperature. However, if your child prefers warmed formula, it is safest to heat the bottle in a pan of water on the stove and test the temperature on the inside of your wrist before giving it to your baby. Do not heat formula in the microwave, as it can heat unevenly and burn your child.

  • Identifying Signs of an Allergy or Intolerance

Depending on your infant's preferences and digestive needs, you may need to change the type of formula in order to offer one that your baby drinks without hesitation or discomfort. You should be sure to discuss any signs of intolerance or allergy with your child's pediatrician. Symptoms that commonly indicate a concern with the formula are rash, hives, colic, fussiness, diarrhea, and reflux.

  • Stick With the Same Formula When Possible

As mentioned above, it may be necessary to make a change in the type of formula that you purchase due to a medical concern or baby's refusal to drink the kind that you have offered. A change in your financial situation or inability to find your baby's formula may also require you to purchase an alternate brand or type of formula. However, outside of these necessary situations, it is important to keep your baby's formula as consistent as possible. Changing too frequently can lead to digestion struggles. Your child may also be allergic to or intolerant of the new formula, and it can be difficult to discern the root of the issues when the formula changes too often.

  • How to Make a Formula Change

You should always discuss a formula change with your pediatrician before you switch types or brands to ensure that the new kind will be a good fit for your baby. When you do make the switch, it is recommended to transition slowly by mixing the formulas to wean off of one and introduce the other. You should also carefully monitor your baby for signs of allergies or intolerances during this process. Selecting the best formula for your baby is one of your most important parenting roles. With the wide variety available in baby formulas, every parent can feel secure in feeding their baby safely and comfortably.
