Bathtub Lift Buying Guide

For those with mobility problems, a bathtub lift is an invaluable device for helping you get in and out of a tub, so that you can live a normal and independent life. There are variety of different bathtub lifts, which you can install in a variety of different ways. You can install them on a wall, on the floor or on the ceiling. There are even portable lifts that you do not need to install.

Types of Bathtub lifts

The following types of bathtubs lifts are available:

Battery Powered

Battery-Powered lifts have a rechargeable battery, and they lift you up and down by pressing a button. Depending on a number of factors, including the model and the weight of the user, these lifts can go as much as 20 cycles without recharging. They also prevent the device from lowering if there is insufficient power in the battery to raise the user up again.

This type of lift is best for a medium-sized person, as a tall person may have difficulty with it. This is because there is not a lot of room to extend legs. This type of lift also assumes that the user can pick themselves off the bathroom floor.

Inflatable

Inflatable lifts have a cushion that has a battery-powered air compressor. When users want to lower themselves to the tub, they push a button, and this deflates the cushion. Likewise, when they want to raise themselves, they again push the button, which inflates the cushion.

This type of lift is best for smaller people, as it lowers the user closer to the floor than other types of lifts. It also requires that users can balance themselves on a soft cushion.

Water Powered

Water-powered lifts use the house's water system to lift users up and down. You simply attache it to a shower head or some other water source. What is good about these types of lifts is that you do not need a rechargeable battery to power it. On the other hand, you will need sufficient water pressure in your home to pick up and lower yourself.

Keep in mind that these types of bathtub lifts are no longer so common in the market, due to a lack of popularity in comparison with battery-powered lifts.

Manual

A manual lift uses a lever that your must crank in order to raise yourself up and down. Like with a water-powered bathtub lift, there is no need for a rechargeable battery. This type of device is also simpler than electric lifts, which means there is less of a chance of something going wrong or breaking. They are further, as a general rule, less expensive than electric lifts. On the other hand, you must be physically fit enough to crank yourself up and down. This kind of lift also requires more patience than an electric lift.

Factors To Consider When Choosing a Bathtub Lift

Before selecting a bathtub lift, you should consider the following factors when making your decision:

Maximum Height

You should pay particular attention to maximum height of the lift. You want a lift that can rise at least to the edge of your tub. If you are tall, you probably want to get even higher, so that you can properly extend your legs. As a rule of thumb, the higher the lift can go the better.

Minimum Height

Just as important as the maximum height of the lift is the minimum height. You want to get as low as you can to your tub's floor, especially if you have dexterity issues. Some lifts can go as low as as a few inches from the floor.

Weight

If you are heavy, you want to make sure that the lift you select is capable of rising and lower your weight in the tub. Most standard lifts can lift as much as 400 pounds. If you are heavier than this, you may have to order a custom-built lift.

Width

You probably want as wide a lift that can fit in your bathtub. Keep in the mind that some lifts have extendable widths. This means that you can extend it past the tub so that you can easily sit down on it before lowering yourself.

Material Strength

You should look for a lift that is made from a strong material, such as stainless steel or aluminum. These types of lifts are more sturdy than those made out of plastic.

Backrest Type

Some bathtub lifts have have backrests that stay upright. Others have backrests that lower when you sit down. Still others have adjustable backrests, which let you move the backrest from its upright position to its lowered position. These types of backrests give you the most flexibility when you are bathing yourself.

Swivel Seats

Some bathtub lifts have an option called a swivel seat, which you can add to the lift. These seats make it easier for you to turn your body when you are lowering and raising yourself from the tub.

Surface Material of the Seat

You basically have two options when it comes to the surface material of the lift seat. You can get either a smooth surface or a surface that is slip-resistant. If you have problems with balance and dexterity, you should definitely choose the latter.

Suction Cups

A number of bathtub lifts come with suction cups, which grip the bottom of the tub so that the seat has more stability. Keep in mind that suction cups will only work if your tub has a smooth surface.

Options

Many bathtub lifts come with a variety of different options, which include:

  • Headrest attachments for tall people
  • Seatbelts
  • Washable seat covers

How To Select a Bathtub Lift

First, decide what type of lift you would like. Then, look for ones that have the features you want. Finally, you can reduce this list further by adding price a consideration. You also want to make sure than any lift you select has gotten positive reviews online.

NOTE

: While most electric bathtub lifts have a safety feature that prevents the seat from being being lowered if there is not enough power to raise the seat, it is always best to be cautious. When using one of the these lifts, have a mobile or portable phone handy in case you ever need help.
