Blocks For Toddler Buying Guide

Blocks For Toddler Image

Toddlers are full of energy and will naturally move things from one place to another, mainly between 18 months and 36 months. Having this in mind, keeping a wide-variety of blocks on hand is essential for keeping toddlers busy throughout their day. Blocks have been a mainstay in homes, as well as educational facilities, for decades. Despite there being other toys available, there is a certain appeal to the use of blocks. It could be for their durability, or it may be because children and parents love that it’s possible to build any structure their imagination desires.

1: Wooden Blocks

Just about every preschool across the United States has either a set of plain or colorful wooden blocks in one of their toddler rooms—this tends to hold true for many homes with toddlers, as well. Not only are these blocks easy to handle and stack, but their also simple to clean and store. The versatility of wooden blocks allows toddlers to stack, use their imaginations, knock structures down, and learn how to clean up without struggling.

• Easy cleanup • Simple to build and stack • No paint to chew off

2: Foam Blocks

These blocks tend to come in multiple colors, shapes, and sizes. In addition to teaching toddlers how to create unique and imaginative structures, they can also learn about textures and densities. When picking up a block, we can ask the toddler what color it is what about its shape. Storage and clean-up for these blocks are a little bit trickier because they’re different sizes and shapes, but you can solve this through the use of storage bins or baskets. One cool thing about these blocks is that they’re naturally sticky. So, when you’re building with them, it’s possible to create unusual structures that don’t seem possible. This is funny for toddlers, and they’ll try to mimic these building principles.

• Soft if falls down • New shapes to learn • Opportunity to learn colors

3: Canvas Blocks

These blocks differ a bit from foam blocks in that they have a foam interior and a tougher, canvas exterior. They’re a bit more rugged for toddlers who are still putting things in their mouths, which the foam blocks have difficulty handling. A canvas block is easy to spot clean but isn’t machine washable. They’re available in a rainbow of colors, which allows for more teaching opportunities. Because they’re made of a soft material, they’re fun for building and knocking down. Toddlers love to create a tall tower and them knock it down immediately. Because they’re canvas, there’s no chance of anyone getting hurt.

Benefits: • All the same size and shape • Soft if fall down • Easy to spot clean

4: Jumbo Cardboard Blocks

Cardboard building blocks are fun for building super-sized structures because of the block’s extra large size. The brick-like appearance allows children to create imaginative buildings and other kinds of constructions. Because the blocks are made of cardboard, it’s important for adults to make sure the toddlers aren’t walking or standing on them or else they’ll crush. The same holds true for biting or chewing on them—they won’t hold up. They will hold up to building and knocking down. Be careful when storing them because, if they’re packed too tightly on the shelve, they’ll crush.

Benefits: • Create large structures • Lots of colors • Lots of shapes

5: Alphabet Building Blocks

Here’s another traditional mainstay for many preschools and homes across America—alphabet building blocks. Traditionally, they are small blocks featuring a letter on one side and patterns or pictures on the other sides. However, over the years, these blocks have gotten larger, the colors have gotten more vibrant, and the pictures have gotten more descriptive. These blocks stand up to a lot of building, knocking down, throwing, chewing, and other toddler games. Some of these blocks also have numbers on them for additional teaching opportunities.

Benefits: • Opportunity to teach letters • Fits in toddler’s hands • Gross motor skills opportunity

6: Mega Blocks

Children of all ages love interlocking blocks, and Mega Blocks allow toddlers the ability to handle these types of blocks without frustration. In addition to being available in multiple colors and shapes, these blocks can go right into the dishwasher for easy cleaning. They lock together so toddlers can build structures that will stay together. The large-sturdy back the blocks come in helps toddlers learn how to clean up easily. They work well with other building block sets, too, for additional make-believe opportunities.

Benefits: • Won’t fall apart when knocked down • Dishwasher safe • Easy to clean up

7: Magnetic Building Blocks

Using these building blocks helps toddlers advance from building to putting things together. They’ll learn how the magnet sticks, as well as how it repels. These magnetic blocks come with a book that teaches how to create specific patterns, but toddlers can build anything they want. The idea of creating something from their imagination using a wide-variety of shapes and colors is exciting, and this could become their favorite toy set.

Benefits: • Opportunity to learn about magnets • Can learn about patterns • Can learn what magnets stick to

8: Interlocking Plastic Blocks

This kind of block is actually a block that looks like it has “bristles” on its edges and when the toddler touches their edges against each other, they stick. They’re available in many different shapes in colors. The structures will stay together when it’s on the floor but will break apart if it’s tossed. This type of block helps toddlers learn that, if they don’t apply enough pressure to the block, it won’t stick together. Opportunities for learning about colors and shapes are also possible with these blocks.

Benefits: • Teaches about textures • Dishwasher safe • Teaches about applying pressure

No matter which building block set you select, it’s important to remember that supervision should be used at all times. Small pieces can break off of the foam blocks set and become lodged into the toddler’s throat, so that could become a hazard. Therefore that set, as well as all of the rest of them, should be used with caution. Building blocks are a fun and educational way to bring toddlers and adults together in an engaging way. Toddlers learn about colors, gross motor, shapes, textures, patience, cleaning up, and more.
