Brewing Kettle Buying Guide

Wine may be the nectar of the gods, but beer most definitely is the nectar of the people. Even Abraham Lincoln understood the power of the brew, for he is quoted as saying, “I am a firm believer in the people … bring them real facts and beer.” Well said—bring us beer! This most enticing malted ambrosia goes with everything, be it food, emotion, work, or play. But with the thousands of different brews, microbrews, stouts, lagers, and ales out there, you could drink a different brand every day until you’re a thousand years old without finding one you truly love. And that’s why so many of us brew our own. Brewing your own beer is like, well, it’s like coming home. But finding the right brewing kettle for your needs may not be so easy. For this, you need a helpful buying guide.

What’s so great about brewing your own beer?

Asking this question is almost like asking, “What’s so great about beer?” Do you remember the first time you ever tasted beer? For most of us, it’s like the shot heard ‘round the world. We’ll never forget how we felt when we took that first sip and discovered why beer has topped the list of the most popular beverages for literally thousands of years. If you already brew your own, you know why it’s so great. If you don’t, here are just a few reasons:

 You’ll save cash—after buying the equipment, you’re paying way less than a buck for each brew;  You’ll always have your favorite beer right in your own home—no shortages ever;  You’ll develop a whole new appreciation for beer;  You’re always ready for a party; and  Brewing your own beer is just plain fun!

What are the most important features to consider when purchasing a brewing kettle?

Now that you’re convinced about brewing your own beer, it’s time to learn about what’s out there. The range in price, quality, and features of beer brewing kettles available is a bit staggering, considering you can pay as little as $40 or as much as $40,000 for one. The most important things to consider are your own needs—but don’t just consider your needs today; understand that you’ll likely be brewing for a long time to come. Therefore, consider how you may want to add on to your brewing system tomorrow. When choosing your brewing kettle, think about these things:

1) Pot size: How much beer will you brew at one time? Do you want to store a lot or just enough for that next party? Home brews can last up to several years if stored in the right temp.

2) Material: Brew kettles come in aluminum or stainless steel.

Aluminum

Pros—Aluminum is less expensive; there’s an aluminum pot for every budget. It conducts heat better than stainless steel. It also cools down faster. All of this means you’ll likely spend less time brewing. If you’re a beginner, consider aluminum for its easy-on-the-budget price tag. It’s important to note, though, that aluminum does not always mean cheaper, and some aluminum kettles are made partly of aluminum and partly of stainless steel.

Cons—Aluminum will oxidize, so be careful not to use oxygenated cleaners on these. They also don’t last as long as stainless steel, which is the reason for the lower price.

Stainless Steel

Pros—Stainless steel is more expensive, but if you’re not a beginner, you may want to go for quality over low price. A stainless steel kettle is also prettier, if that matters to you; it will look nicer longer because you can use oxygenated cleaners on it without ruining its shine. Finally, stainless steel brewing kettles last longer because they’re stronger and of higher quality. Experienced brewers typically use stainless steel, and businesses really should.

Cons—Higher price is of the few cons of stainless steel brewing kettles. They also don’t conduct heat as well as aluminum brewing kettles do, but many of today’s stainless steel models do boast good heat conduction. It’s also important to note that some very affordable brewing kettles come in stainless steel. You just have to shop around.

3) Method: As one beer brewer put it, “Brewing beer is nothing more than taking sugar from barley and turning it into alcohol.” There are three methods to do so: kit, extract, and all-grain. If you’re just starting out, you may want to go kit, and all-grain typically is for experienced brewers. If you’re a home-brew dabbler, consider a kit, in which case you may want to go for a more budget-friendly kettle. If you’re experienced, you plan on doing this for years to come, or you’re buying for your business, consider investing in a higher-end kettle.

What are the most popular brewing kettles available today?

The most popular kettles today typically are made of stainless steel, but some of the aluminum ones are made partly of aluminum and partly of stainless steel. Here are a few of the best-reviewed available.

Bayou Classic Bayou Stainless Brew Kettle, 30 quart, Stainless Steel Bayou is a recognized name in beer brewing kettles. If you’re a beginner, the Bayou Classic in stainless steel can be a great option. This one has a nice little price-tag that won’t, by any means, break your budget. The Bayou Classic in stainless steel is a 30-quart with a 7.5-gallon maximum capacity. Use this kettle for malt extract home brewing or ‘brew-in-a-bag.’ Its stainless construction makes for easy clean-up and easy sterilization before brewing. Plus, it’s multi-purpose—you don’t have to use it just for home beer-brewing; the Bayou Classic can even be used for many of your other outdoor cooking needs.

GasOne 10-Gallon Stainless Steel Home Brew Pot Brew Kettle Set If you have a bit more to spend or you’re a little more serious than a newbie home beer brewer, the GasOne 10-Gallon can be a good way for you to go. Its high-quality stainless steel makes it very long-lasting and easy for clean-up. It even boasts good heat conduction. This one’s extremely strong, and that strength will help keep its shiny, sleek look attractive for a long time to come. It comes with a lid that keeps the heat inside the pot and helps to ensure even heat levels during brewing. This one also can be used for other types of cooking, including for seafood and peanut boiling.

The Grainfather Connect If you’re going high-end, the Grainfather Connect can be a good choice. Serious home brewers and business owners will appreciate it if they want an easy transition from extract brewing to all-grain. This one’s fully electric and comes with digital temperature controls that make for fine-tuned accuracy. It features a built-in mash recirculation pump that equates to efficient brewing. It also features a convoluted counter flow chiller which makes for quicker cooling.

Brewing your own beer can be an art; it can be a science; it can be whatever you make of it. You can do it for fun, for parties, to make friends, to save money—the list of reasons is as limitless as the personalities of home brewers themselves. One thing’s for sure, though—finding that perfect formula of the beer you love most is an ‘aha moment’ you’ll never forget. For, once you land on your ideal brewing formula, you can finally say, “Honey, I’m home.”
