Built In Wine Cellar Buying Guide

Built-in wine cellars are stylish products that mount in an opening around cabinets. Many built-in cellar manufacturers make their products with various venting fans. These components are important because they help the units slide into place with ease. On a traditional cellar, there is an exhaust on the bottom of the base; this air vent is always positioned strategically so that it's not obstructed.

No matter what kind of built-in wine cellar brand you choose, the layout will have suitable measurements for an opening in a kitchen or near a home bar. All wine cellars stand out in either space as they're designed with custom elements and professional-grade housing materials.

Cellar Housing Designs and Maintenance Requirements

In order to give built-in units a custom design, major product manufacturers place different materials around each unit's base. For example, cellars that are designed for a kitchen typically have stainless steel components. The thickness of the steel will vary depending on the trim. If a unit has a small glass panel on the door, the stainless steel trim will be thin, and a trim will usually thicker when a door has a larger glass panel. Besides a steel and glass combination, you'll also find units that are designed with a wood overlay. These built-in wine cellar designs work well in a kitchen that's equipped with oak or maple cabinets because the wooden cellar components make the wooden cabinets stand out.

If you're going to purchase a cellar that has a stainless trim, you'll need to buy a proper cleanser and a suitable rag in order to keep the steel material spotless. The cloth's fabric must be stitched with a professional-grade material because you'll produce more spots on a stainless steel trim if you wipe the surfaces with a product that isn't plush and soft. Because a micro fiber cloth is thick, soft, and plush, it's an ideal product for a stainless steel cleaning job. You can also use this type of cloth to remove dust since the fibers have grooves that grab and trap environmental elements.

Storage Options

Cellars can hold a small number of wine bottles or large batches of wine products. The smallest units have several shelves that can cool up to 30 bottles of wine. In an average compact unit, there are usually four racks that are stacked. If a unit has a fifth storage zone, this section may be angled along the bottom of the chamber. Cellars that hold more than 30 bottles of wine are much larger and are designed with an increased number of shelves. The big benefit is that oversize cellars can cool many bottles of wine efficiently because they have dual cooling technology. Dual cooling keeps all bottles within an ideal temperature range by distributing chilled air evenly throughout an entire unit.

Cellar Configurations

Modern cellars that are made for an opening along the side of a cabinet are designed in different configurations and heights. Tall units are very popular in spacious kitchens; however, in order to install these cellars in a home, strategic prep procedures must be implemented. Since a tall cellar is long, the path to a kitchen must be cleared so that the frame won't damage as it's guided throughout the home. If a cellar is an average size, the process of toting or rolling the product into a kitchen or bar won't be challenging. However, other things must be considered before the unit is mounted in place. For example, if a cellar has two doors instead of one door, you'll have to measure the length of the doors while they're opened in order to ensure proper clearance in the mounting zone.

Features

Besides dual cooling, there are many other features that are included with modern wine cellar products. Depending on the brand, a cellar may have:

  • A durable design: When a cellar has a durable design, it can handle sudden impacts that occur while bottles of wine are loaded on the shelves and extracted. If someone slams the door on a durable unit, the energy that generates after the door seams contact the frame won't cause any damage because the durable material will absorb the impact.
  • A tempered glass door: Tempered glass is very tough since it's a safety solution. When this type of glass is made for a cellar door, engineers process various chemicals to give the material strength. Tempered glass is stronger than regular glass because the outer layers are strategically compressed.
  • Temperature memory settings: Cellars that are built with temperature memory settings give consumers opportunities to maintain a specific temperature for certain wine brands. After a unit with a temperature feature is set, it will keep the air in the chamber within temperature range that's programmed unit the settings are adjusted.
  • Buying Strategies

Stylish wine cellars that mount along the side of a kitchen counter are typically designed with one slim door or two average doors. If you're going to buy a unit that has two doors, consider the available space carefully. Because a cellar with doors must swing out in order to provide access to the chamber, you'll need to mount this type of cellar in a spot that's away from frequently used cabinets doors. If you place a two-door cellar unit next to cabinets that hold pots, pans, and other accessories, residents won't be able to access these cabinets until the wine cellar doors are closed.

During a renovation project, you can upgrade your kitchen by installing a cellar underneath the cabins. However, before you begin the renovation process, have a carpenter cut out an opening for the cellar in a spot that's away from the sink. Although placing a cellar close to your sink can make serving and cleanup routines easier, you shouldn't mount a unit around a water source because a simple spill could damage the electronics that power a built-in cellar's features.
