Cameras For Kid Buying Guide

Your child is a budding Diane Arbus, and you’d like to find a camera that won’t shatter into a million pieces just looking at it. There isn’t much point in giving your child a camera if you’re too nervous for them to use it.

There’s an art to choosing a camera specifically for a child. We’ve got a few suggestions so that you know precisely what to look for in your child’s first camera. Let’s take a look.

How To Choose A Children’s Camera

Children have specific requirements for a camera so they won’t be frustrated or break it immediately.

Age Range

It doesn’t matter how good or sturdy a camera is if it’s too complicated for little fingers. What little kids need most is a big button for the shutter and solid, sturdy grips.

Toddlers and young elementary school kids are still working on hand-eye coordination and probably won’t be looking deeply into a viewfinder much. A digital screen and a single, easy-to-press button for the shutter is all you need.

As kids get older, they begin to see the world in more detail. Older kids can think through cause and effect, so cameras that have more manual controls are possible.

Interest Level

Does your child just want to take selfies or pictures of siblings and then delete them? Are they older and interested in composition and displaying their photographs?

You should take stock of your child’s interest in photography before deciding on a camera. If he or she is really interested, having a camera with a few controls can be an excellent way to practice cause and effect, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills. If they just want a fun toy every once in a while, a simple point and click will do the trick.

Picture Quality

Your child probably doesn’t need a 24-megapixel camera (unless your child is actually an adult), but they do need the satisfaction of seeing a roughly clear picture. Try to get a camera with at least 5 megapixels so that blur is reduced. Very few children can stand still long enough to get a good picture with fewer megapixels. Unless your child doesn’t care at all about the actual image, 5 megapixels is a good starting point.

Battery Life

For younger kids, a camera that takes a few AA batteries will be enough because they won’t be using the camera non-stop. AA batteries have a long life with occasional use, and younger kids are likely to stop and start instead of composing loads of thoughtful pictures.

As your child ages, their patience lengthens. They need cameras with longer battery life so that they have time to compose all their shots. Cameras with rechargeable lithium-ion batteries allow them to take a few hundred pictures while they’re out exploring nature or documenting family life. This is a good age to teach them to plan ahead by remembering to charge the camera before going on a photo shoot.

The most significant factor of them all. Children are tough on things. They need tools that don’t crack or break at the slightest provocation.

One thing that makes a children’s camera useful is large, thick grips. Casings like this also serve as shock absorbers for falls and bumps. Cameras should be able to withstand a fall from at least two feet (the arm height of a toddler or young elementary child), so there are no tears.

Bulky plastic cases are best because they withstand cracking better. Rubber grips and edges help the camera bounce and absorb shocks on impact. Other considerations are well-protected lenses that can be wiped clean from fingerprints.

Cameras that have dust resistant and water resistant casing are excellent as well. Kids don’t have to worry about spills, and they can take them to the pool or into the bathtub for extra fun.

There’s a lot of room here. For younger kids, it’s just not worth it to invest a chunk of change into the camera because it’s still primarily a toy. They’re just as likely to carry around a wooden toy camera as they are a real one.

A good price point for beginning camera enthusiasts is what you’re willing to pay, but there are many good introductory cameras available for under $50. Some of them are under $20. Your child can experiment with the concept of a real camera, and you won’t have a heart attack every time you see them running with a camera in hand.

For older kids who are ready for the responsibility of a device, you can find introductory cameras for $100 or less that have a range of features and still offer a quality that will satisfy true budding photographers.

Once your child graduates from beginner level, you can begin to look into more expensive cameras, but right now, there are plenty of options in a budget range.

Internet Connection

The most convenient way to get pictures of a camera is through wifi or other connection. Some very basic cameras still have a physical connection to a computer, such as a USB, but some allow your child to upload them to a computer with the push of a button. Again, if your child is just taking pictures for fun and doesn’t really care about keeping them, a simple USB connection is excellent for pictures they do end up saving.

Internet connections are suitable for updating settings on cameras as well. Some learning cameras such as VTech series also have games that kids can play, so might be worth it to go where the technology is.

Instant Gratification

Digital cameras offer children instant feedback for each of their pictures but don’t discount the power of Polaroid-style cameras. Physical photos give kids tactile response to their photography. There’s nothing like having an actual picture in hand to show friends or family. Polaroid-style cameras are easy on the budget, but the downside is investing in the film.

Digital cameras don’t have real pictures to hold, but you can always print out photos that your child really wants to keep. The upside for both is your child can see what they’ve done without having to wait.

The Takeaway

Cameras are for every age and teach valuable skills. Young children can practice hand/eye coordination, and older kids problem solve, learn patience and critical thinking skills. It’s worth it to invest in a children’s camera, but your wallet doesn’t have to take a huge hit. You can surprise and delight your child with a camera of his or her very own.
