CF Card Reader Buying Guide

Picture: 2-in-1 USB 3.0 Portable from Anker

Astonishing, as it may seem— contemporary, card reader features continue to excel in product design, speed, and card diversity.

Early card readers were pretty basic, but that was because the cards were basic. Yet, as technology met the demands for speed and memory—compact flash card designs had to keep up with those demands. Card reader features and benefits have become vital to the process.

An Anecdote Always Helps

Imagine that a professional photographer has just purchased a new CF card reader—right before a big job. When he returned to his lab to process his work, his new card reader not only will not perform as expected, but it actually damages the card containing all of his files. Fortunate for him, he has been in the habit of backing up his work on the job, so he is able to recover the damaged files—probably a habit born of an earlier experience.

Taking Stock

Suffice to say that card readers are not just something you run out and purchase. It is essential that consumers decide on the features they want. Give some thought to the following questions before starting out to shop:

BEGINNING SHOPPER: Making Sure This Product Will Satisfy a Need or Solve a Problem... Why do you think, that this would be a good product fit for you?

SAVVY SHOPPER: Identifying Features to Help You Grow to the Next Level... What things make a particular product stand out among the others?

2.____________________
3.____________________

Now, once you have been able to get in touch with these things, you will be better able to evaluate your actual needs. Then, based on seeing yourself go through the motions, write them down on paper. This will further help with the list of features you are working to identify.

Sometimes, it seems probable or apparent that we have a handle on what is needed for a given project—only to begin work and realize there was something we neglected to consider.

Think About Some of These Things …

Given the amount of memory, you have or intend to purchase on a compact flash (CF) card—how important is the speed at which your card reader can write information onto the card and the speed at which it can get the information off the card, making the data readily available to you?

If, for example, you purchase a card reader that operates on USB 2.0 interface, and you have a secure digital (SD) card with 64GB, it will take much longer to read and write to the card, than it would if your card reader operated on a USB 3.0 interface.

Moreover, you might own several cards, like the two we have just been talking about—the CF and the SD, and maybe a micro secure digital high capacity card (SDHC). Perhaps these cards are all necessary to the success of your work environment, and they are memory cards that work with various equipment you own.

Now, you must consider whether a card reader will work with all of them. In addition, will you be able to insert them all into the reader at the same time, so you can work in concert with the information on each one?

Occupations that Have an Everyday Use for Card Readers

Notice that the following groups of occupations are listed in three groups to help identify areas where memory cards and card readers contribute to the ease of organization and portability. Only a few are mentioned, but they will get you thinking about where you already fit—or might conceivably fit. Feel free to add occupations and get creative with them.

A Little About Memory Cards

Today, memory cards are common in our culture, having become a real part of life at home, at school, and at work. They are found in mobile phones, digital cameras, laptops, desktops, tablets, and DSLR cameras, just to name a few. As a result, when buying a memory card, the things we have to consider range from the capacity of the card (GB), how many hours of music or JPEG copies of photos will the card hold, or how fast can it record a standard HD video.

Of course, these are not nearly all of the types of data that can be stored on a typical card, and in addition—most of these benefits also have variables that must be considered. Imagine if you were an attorney for example, and you have to travel to someone’s home or office to take a deposition. You would most likely have a class six or higher, 16 or 32 GB SanDisk with you, albeit a class 10 is a little faster when you are ready to transfer the information or HD video over to your office computer.

With this in mind, it seems that making the transfer to your computer will be simple. You remove the SanDisk from your camera and slip it into your CF memory card reader, which is attached to your computer, and you are ready to go… unless, that is, your memory card reader is a USB 2.0 interface, which is not fast enough to handle HD video. You can see where this might be a problem.

A Few Things to Consider

Opportunity, we are told, is the mother of invention. You have an opportunity here to make use of valuable technology and save yourself time.

Card readers are relatively small devices that can fit in your pocket or handbag. They require a cable, but many come with the cable as a tail (attached).

Most memory card readers currently on the market use a USB 3.0 interface and can process 5GB or more at very fast speeds, and many of them have multiple slots to accommodate the different shapes and sizes of available cards.

Four types are the most common. They are SD, microSD, CF, and SDHC, all of which we mentioned in a preceding paragraph.

Out of the four types, the varieties of cards and their purposes are too vast to go into here. It is best, for now, to stick with the common ones you will encounter at first.

Notably, the three most important things to look for are the interface speed (USB 3.0 or better), the speed at which the reader transfers high-resolution images and recorded video to your computer, and depending on the potential of your high-speed memory card, how fast can you write to the card as well as receive the data in a readable format?

Therefore, interface, card slots, and transfer speed are on the top of the list, and as for me—a warranty of any kind is a big deal and should be there too!

Card readers are not heavy equipment. As stated before, they are small (tiny in some cases) and somewhat fragile, even while being asked to do a big job, and I want to know that I can depend on mine to work. I feel certain that you do too! END
