Cheap Smartphone Buying Guide

A smartphone has become a necessity in the modern world, but that does not mean that you have to spend a fortune to get a quality one. Many decent smartphones are available for a few hundred dollars or less. There are so many choices, in fact, that it can be difficult to decide what to buy.

Important Features To Look for in a Cheap Smartphone

Feature lists that come with smartphones can often be overwhelming, especially as they often use lots of technical lingo that is intentionally confusing. But here are some of the important features to consider:

Screen Size and Resolution

Size matters when it comes to smartphones. You want to have a phone that is big enough so that you can comfortably view your apps and the data within them. Keep in mind that screen size is not the same thing as resolution. Screen size is the physical size of the screen in inches (or centimeters), while the resolution is the number of pixels displayed on the screen. The more pixels, the clearer and more detailed imagery will appear.

Some budget phones have screen sizes that approach or even exceed 6 inches with full HD resolution, but at a minimum you want at least a 5" screen and a resolution of 1,280 by 720.

Screen Aspect Ratio

Screen aspect ratios relate to the shape of a smartphone. Until recently, most smartphones had a screen ratio of 16:9, which is the same shape as most computer and TV monitors and laptop screens. But the trend now is for a screen with an aspect ratio of 18:9, which means that the device is both taller and thinner. These screens let you see more information when your are checking Facebook and other scrollable apps.

Many cheap smartphones are available with an 18:9 aspect ratio, which makes them appear like the latest high-end device.

Memory and Storage

The terms "memory" and "storage" can be confusing, especially as they are often used interchangeably. Memory refers to the amount of space apps use while actually running on a device, while storage refers to how much space apps use while installed on a device. The more memory you have, the more apps you can run at the same time, and the faster they will run. The more storage you have, the more apps you can install on your device. You need storage as well to keep your photos and videos.

Many cheap smartphones today come with 2 GB or memory, which is what you really should consider a minimum. But budget smartphones with 3 GB or even 4 GB are not uncommon. In terms of storage, you should consider 16 GB a minimum, but 32 GB (or even 64 GB) is better, especially if you save a lot of data to your device.

Operating System

Most cheap smartphones available today come with Google's Android operating system. Though it is possible to get an older (and dated) iPhone at a reasonable price. Keep in mind that not all Android smartphones run the same version of Android. It is not uncommon to the see the following Android versions installed on cheap smartphones:

  • 5 (Lollipop)
  • 6 (Marshmallow)
  • 7 (Nougat)
  • 8 (Oreo)

There is also a Go version of Android, which is an Oreo system that has been specifically adapted to work on inexpensive smartphones.

As a rule of thumb, you should look for a device that has a more recent version of Android (at least Nougat.) This way you will be able to access the latest features of the operating system.

The processor is what runs your device, and it is therefore probably the most important component. You want to get a phone with the fastest processor you can afford. While it can be difficult to tell which processor is faster than another, generally the higher the clock speed the faster the device will run. You will also want a multi-core processor, which allows you to run concurrent applications fast, and a good graphics processor, for running games and for displaying video.

A good minimum processor for a cheap smartphone is a 1.4 GHz 8-core chip.

A camera is an integral part of any good smartphone. Today smartphones — even inexpensive ones — all come with dual cameras: a rear camera for taking ordinary photos and video and a front camera for taking selfies and for participating in video chat. Some smartphones — even inexpensive ones — have two rear lenses, for creating the bokeh effect, where the background is blurred.

At a minimum all cameras on a smartphone should have at least 8 megapixels. Though the higher the better.

Battery Life

Battery life is an important consideration when selecting any smartphone. You should select a phone that can stay running during the course of a full day without having you charge it.

Other Components

There are number of other components that you should have in an inexpensive smartphone. This includes a GPS, so that you can access location services. Also, if you intend to make use of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) apps, you probably want a device with a gyroscope, which helps the device track motion. You further do not have to settle for a cheap plastic phone. Many budget smartphones have metal cases and quality glass screens.

The term "cheap" is a relative one. Some publications consider a cheap smartphone as anything under $500, while others many consider "cheap" as being under $100, or even under $50. The good news is that there are plenty of choices regardless of how you define "cheap." Just keep in mind that the cheaper you go, the less you will buy.

How To Select an Inexpensive Smartphone

The first thing you should do when selecting an inexpensive smartphone is establish the most you are willing to pay for one. Then, find all phones that are available at this price or less. Cull this list by determining the 3 or 4 most important features you require in a smartphone. If after you have culled this list you still have multiple options, choose the one that has gotten the best reviews from reliable online sources.
