Compost Tumbler Buying Guide

Compost is a gardener’s best friend, but if you’re buying bagged varieties, your plants may not be getting the best nutrients. A home compost tumbler can change that. Not only does it provide rich, customizable fertilizer whenever you need it, it’s environmentally friendly and helps you recycle much of your household food waste. Read more to learn about the benefits of home composting and how to choose a tumbler that’s right for you.

What is compost?

Home composting takes food and yard waste and turns it into nutrient-rich fertilizer. The simplest way to create compost is to make a pile of wet wastes such as food scraps and lawn clippings and wait for microorganisms to heat it, breaking it down naturally over the course of several months. With a little tending in a compost tumbler however, waste can decompose faster and with an ideal proportion of nutrients suited to the needs of your particular soil. Ultimately, the best compost is produced through the right combination of matter, air and heat.

The Advantages of Home Composting

Bagged compost is a good product, but is typically made from a single material such as animal manure. This results in a limited nutrient profile that may not be what your plants need. Why is mass produced compost made like this? Because it’s cost effective.

Home compost benefits from a wide array of wastes that break down into different elements. This allows a greater number of microorganisms to grow and results in the most complete breakdown of matter. The nutrients produced are rich and diverse.

How does composting work?

A compost pile requires five elements to break down properly. First it needs carbon from brown matter such as dried leaves and grass to produce heat. Next, nitrogen from so-called green matter is required to help oxidize the carbon. Green waste consists of wet fruit and vegetable scraps. Oxygen then helps bacteria flourish and finally, a little water keeps the environment well-balanced.

Advantages of a Compost Tumbler

Compost piles must be routinely turned and watered. If conditions aren’t properly maintained, the pile won’t break down. Compost bins, whether premade or DIY, are timesavers in that they make parts of tending process easier, but tumblers make perfect compost with the least amount of work.

They are the most efficient of any container composting method. They’re weather-resistant and control decomposition odors, yet are vented to permit oxygen flow. Their dark-colored exterior helps retain critical heat, while a built-in tumbling mechanism turns the contents without shovels or pitchforks. Tumblers are so efficient that compost can be made in half time of a traditional pile.

Compost tumblers are all similar in purpose and design, yet different styles have specific features that make them better than others for certain circumstances. Each has its pros and cons.

The most popular style consists of a single or multi-compartment drum mounted either vertically or horizontally on a central axle. Handles are side-mounted, allowing the user to rotate the drum, effectively mixing the compost inside. This style is especially convenient because it sits in a frame that keeps it off the ground, letting you easily load your compost into buckets or carts for transport to the garden. The drawback to this style is that metal frames can rust or deteriorate before the plastic bin.

Another well-liked style is simple drum that’s mounted over a base that sits directly on the ground. Set on integrated rollers, they’re sturdy, easy to turn and both the drum and base are typically made of the same durable plastic. The only con to this type of tumbler is the height. Instead of opening a door and having compost fall out in a wheelbarrow, it has to be shoveled out, sometimes through a fairly narrow opening.

Lastly is a tumbler that is little more than a plastic sphere. Just load it, put the top on and roll it around the yard. Advantages include portability and design simplicity with limited moving parts. The disadvantage to this style is that when filled, the tumbler is heavy and may require more than one person to move or empty.

Most compost bins are made of HDPE, or High Density Polyethylene Plastic. It’s lightweight, rust-proof, weather-resistant and inexpensive, but should be both food-grade and BPA-free. Plastic that is UV-protected is a plus. This means the interior plastic won’t degrade and leach chemicals in the compost, while the exterior plastic stays smooth and fade-free.

The clear drawback to plastic is that unless you live in a warm climate year-round or can store your tumbler indoors in the winter, it can crack if it gets cold. This type of damage is usually irreparable.

Steel tumblers are the minority on the market, but they’re durable in all climates and if powder-coated, will resist rust for years. Unfortunately, steel is expensive and raises the cost of some models to more than three times that of a plastic tumbler. And if you have to move it, it’s significantly heavier.

When enough waste material to make ideal compost has been added to a single-compartment tumbler, it will still take time for the compost to break down fully. In the meantime, no more waste should be added to the compartment, delaying the start of the next batch.

Dual chambered tumblers solve this problem by offering one chamber in which compost can mature and another in which to start a new batch. Individual batches will be smaller, but you’ll have a steady, consistent supply.

Compost tumblers come in sizes from 6 to nearly 100 gallons. Sizes less than 20 pounds will produce enough compost to treat a few raised planting beds or a very small garden. Average gardens need closer to 35 to 40 pounds and for large gardens, 60 pounds or more is ideal.

Convenience Features

Tumblers on frames are ergonomically-friendly, but look for a frame that is height adjustable. For heavy tumblers, a wheeled frame improves portability.

On framed models, large lids or sliding doors from which compost can simply fall out into a receptacle are perfect for easy hauling to the garden. For models that sit on the ground, choose a model with doors that will accommodate a large shovel.

Since thorough, hassle-free mixing is the primary benefit of a compost tumbler, a style with an internal mixing bar or integrated fins is helpful. This is usually an adaptation in the center axle or the interior body of the drum that helps break clumps of waste apart as the tumbler turns.

For large gardens, a framed tumbler with a drum capacity of over 60 gallons is perfect. In cold climates, opt for steel if possible, or bring a plastic model indoors in winter. Vertically mounted drums claim they mix better, but horizontal drums are easier to turn. Look for a wheeled frame.

For average gardens, a capacity of 40 gallons or more should ensure a steady supply of compost. Both framed and ground-set styles come in this size, but the more capacity it holds, the heavier it will be to move.

For small gardens, even a few gallons will do, but sizing up to something near 30 pounds lets you expand both your compost production and your garden with a minimally larger footprint.

Buying and Use Tips

• Doors and lids that don’t close completely let odor out and may attract insects and rodents. Select a model with secure door latches. • Built-in drainage vents keep your mixture moist, but let excess fluid out. • Double-walled or insulated drums stay warm enough to make compost in cooler weather. • Aerating vents help maintain optimal oxygen balance. • Metal hardware should be treated for weather-resistance.

A compost tumbler is a small investment that yields impressive results. You’ll have hassle-free, custom garden fertilizer at your fingertips for a fraction of the cost of commercial compost, while keeping food scraps out of the food stream. It’s a win-win for both the environment and you.
