Compression Sleeve Buying Guide

People wear compression sleeves for a variety of reasons including helping support their limbs when they play sports, comfort, or to prevent certain medical conditions like blood clots. A good fitting compression sleeve can help to improve your body's blood flow and reduce any swelling or pain you may be feeling in your extremities. This buyer's guide will tell you everything you need to know about compression sleeves so you can pick out your own with confidence.

Defining Compression Sleeves

A compression sleeve is a tube of stretchy fabric that fits snugly to your extremity and applies gentle pressure to the area. A graduated compression sleeve gets tighter by your ankle or wrist and gradually loosens as it goes up your leg or arm. If it has a foot attached, it's a compression stocking rather than a sleeve. You can purchase compression sleeves over the counter. Also, your insurance may cover them if you get your doctor to prescribe them. They're even available online, at medical supply companies, and in drug stores.

What do Compression Sleeves Do?

The gentle pressure that these compression sleeves apply to the area allows your blood to circulate throughout your system more freely. They're also great for helping your legs or arms feel less fatigued or achy at the end of a long day.

For athletes, wearing compression sleeves increases the blood flow to and from their muscles. This can help them perform at higher levels. The increased blood flow can also help to prevent damage to the muscle tissue cells, and it can help the muscles recover quicker after a workout.

Because the blood continues to move around your system with compression sleeves, it makes it harder for your blood to pool and form clots. They can also reduce swelling around the affected areas and make it more difficult for a clot to break free.

Reasons to Wear Compression Sleeves

As we touched on earlier, compression sleeves have a variety of uses ranging from simple aches and pains up to medical problems. It's an affordable and easily accessible treatment option for several conditions including:

  • Aches and Pains
  • Blood Clots
  • Blood Clot Prevention
  • Cellulitis or Fluid Retention
  • DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis)
  • Injury to the Extremity
  • Lymphedema or Swelling
  • Muscle Fatigue
  • Surgery
Different Types of Compression Sleeves

There are two main types of compression sleeves you can buy. They're both ready to wear straight out of the box and easy to put on or take off.

Daytime Compression Sleeves

The daytime compression sleeves start at your wrist, and this is the tighter portion of the sleeve. It'll travel up your arm almost to your shoulder, and the tightness will decrease as it goes up your arm. Daytime compression sleeves help to support a healthy flow of lymph fluid up your arm and into your lymph nodes.

You can purchase these daytime compression sleeves in a variety of colors and patterns including flesh tones, white, black, grey or with bold colors and patterns. Additionally, some come with a gauntlet or glove attached to one end that fits to help hold the sleeve in place and improve your circulation further. You can buy a good quality daytime sleeve for $100 to $250.

Nighttime Compression Sleeves

If you've tried a daytime compression sleeve and it's not giving you the support or relief you expect, you may want to try a nighttime compression sleeve during the evening hours. This is slightly bulkier than a daytime sleeve. This added bulk is because you're not as worried about movement when you wear it and you're laying down.

Nighttime sleeves are typically made out of a foam material that is covered by a cloth layer. There are also a few straps that you can adjust to get the right amount of compression. They come in a variety of colors, but they're more expensive. A nighttime sleeve can run between $200 up to $1000 easily. You can also wear the nighttime sleeve during the day for short periods of rest.

Compression Sleeve Tightness

Compression sleeves also vary in tightness levels, and each level means something slightly different. The different class compression measures are expressed in millimeters of mercury or mmHg. This is based on the amount of pressure that's exerted by one liquid mercury millimeters. It's the same measurements you use when you take your blood pressure readings.

  • Class One Sleeves - 20 to 30 mmHg of pressure on your extremity.
  • Class Two Sleeves - 30 to 40 mmHg of pressure on your extremity.
  • Class Three Sleeves - 40 to 50 mmHg of pressure on your extremity.
  • Class Four Sleeves - 50 to 60 mmHg of pressure on your extremity.
1. Class One Sleeves
  • Class one compression sleeves are for people who want their extremities to stop aching as they go about their day. The gentle compression can help to rejuvenate the muscles in the extremity. People who use their arms a lot of who stand a lot typically wear these sleeves.
2. Class Two Sleeves
  • Class two has a moderate amount of compression. When you wear them, you should notice reduced swelling in your extremities. They also help to take away the heavy feeling in your arms and legs. People who routinely sit through long flights or who have DVT wear them to prevent the appearance of spider veins.
3. Class Three Sleeves
  • At this level, you're wearing a firm compression sleeve. They are moderately snug and tight, so they do take a few days to get used to wearing them. They're good for people with more severe spider veins or people who have just had a surgical procedure done.
4. Class Four Sleeves
  • The final level compression sleeves go to is class four. These are extra firm and tight sleeves. They're specifically designed for more severe cases of swelling or blood clots. You should only wear them if your primary care doctor prescribed them for you or suggested that you wear them.
How to Wear Compression Sleeves

When you first start wearing your compression sleeves, you will have an adjustment period where you get used to the feel of the sleeves. Depending on the class, they may feel very odd at first. However, you'll adapt to wearing them quickly.

You do want to make sure that your compression sleeve is flat against your skin without any bunched up or wrinkled areas. You also want them long enough to cover your extremity from your ankle or wrist to your thigh or shoulder. If you have to roll them up, they're too long, and you want to find a different sleeve that fits correctly. If you have to roll or fold them over, they could get too tight and cut off your circulation.

If your primary care doctor prescribed your sleeve for you or told you to wear one, you most likely want to wear it for the majority of the time. You can remove it to take a bath or a shower. If you want to wear one because you think it'll help with aches or pains, consult your doctor. They can tell you how long you should wear the sleeve at a time.

If you think that you could benefit from having compression therapy or buying a compression sleeve, it's always best to consult your doctor. They can help determine what class of compression sleeve would be the most beneficial for you to use. They'd also be able to tell you if it's a good idea or if you should look elsewhere for a solution.
