Crepe Pan Buying Guide

Crepe Pan Image

Crepe pans are specially design cookware for making crepes. Crepes are similar to pancakes, but they are much thinner. The shallow edges of the crepe pan allow you to easily flip the thin crepe as well as spread the batter evenly without spills, and they are specially designed to make each crepe perfectly shaped.

Crepe Pans Verses Regular Pans

Don’t be fooled by the name. Crepe pans can be used for much more than simply making crepes. Many home cooks find that they are a useful addition to their cookware collection and are helpful in making a variety of dishes. They often work better than a traditional frying pan when cooking flat foods. The following are just a few of the alternative ways in which you can use a crepe pan.

Regular Pancakes: It is obvious that a crepe pan would work well for regular pancakes since they are basically thick crepes. The lightweight design and cool touch handle makes it possible to do air flips as well as flips with a spatula. • Omelets: Crepe pans make flipping an omelet simple and mess-free due to the shallow sides. • Sausage and Bacon: These types of meats cook well in a crepe pan as the shallow sides are still tall enough to hold all of the fats and liquids.

If you are the type of home cook that makes these flatter foods quite often, you will find that adding a crepe pan to your collection of cookware will be a good investment.

The difference Between Crepe Makers and Crepe Pans

If you are in the market for a crepe pan, you may be confused by the difference between a crepe pan and a crepe maker. Crepe makers are simply an electric version of the crepe pan that can cook large numbers of evenly shaped crepes much faster than what you can in a regular crepe pan. Those with large families, or anyone that plans to make crepes for special occasions like family events and parties, will love a crepe maker. Otherwise, it may not make sense to purchase a device that is dedicated to only one type of food.

Most people find that a traditional crepe pan is a better investment. They are more affordable, and they are much more versatile than a crepe maker. Crepe makers cost more, and they are considered a one-trick pony. The regular crepe pans are also easier to clean.

Features to Look for in a Crepe Pan

Crepe pans range from eight to twelve inches in size. If you want to make traditional French crepes, you will need one that is ten inches or larger. Pans that are less than ten inches seem a bit too small. Regardless of which size you may need, keep in mind that you must account for the offset created by the edge of the pan. For example, you will only be able to make nine inch crepes in a ten inch pan.

It is also important to note that not all crepe pans are compatible with induction cooktops. Those with induction cooktops will want to check all crepe pans that are made from non-ferrous metals like aluminum to make sure have a copper or steel base before purchasing.

You will need to have a good grip on your crepe pan while making crepes or pancakes. This is accomplished with the use of a heat-proof handle. If the handle on your crepe pan isn’t listed as being heat-proof, you will find that it gets way too hot to grip after making only a few crepes. Those with large families definitely need a heat-proof handle while couples or singles may not see this as a problem.

Pay attention to what type of coating is on the crepe pan. Non-stick coatings like Teflon contain a chemical known as PTFE. This chemical is stable when used at low temperatures, but it may release toxic fumes when used with high temperatures. The non-stick coating can also contain PFOA. This chemical is even more toxic and is a known carcinogen. It is best to avoid crepe pans that have either of these types of coatings.

Crepe Pan Materials

You will find that aluminum crepe pans are lightweight and easier to hold. They have excellent heat distribution, but they often lack the durability that other materials provide. Anodized aluminum helps solve this problem somewhat, but most all aluminum pans come with some type of non-stick coating, which offers you a superior cooking experience but doesn’t last as long.

Cast iron crepe pans are the heaviest and are the most durable. With the proper care and maintenance, these pans will last a lifetime or longer. In addition, their non-stick surface provides a healthier alternative to Teflon. Keep in mind that cast iron will need to be seasoned with oil, and more oil will be needed for cooking. One of the unique characteristics of cast iron is the patina that it develops over time. This actually improves the non-stick qualities of the pan.

Carbon steel has the same strength and durability of cast iron, but you will have a smoother cooking surface. They also are more sensitive to temperature changes. This makes them the ideal crepe pan for those with ceramic or glass cooktops. The only downfall is that they corrode quickly when used to cook acidic foods.

The final option when it comes to crepe pans is stainless steel. Stainless steel can be a poor conductor of heat so you will often find that these pans include a copper or aluminum base. Stainless steel provides you with durability while being lighter weight than cast iron. Home cooks with health issues that make it hard to lift heavier pans will appreciate the benefits of this metal. Many come with a non-stick surface.
