Dental Guard Buying Guide

Dental Guard Image

Your dental guard slips over your teeth to protect them from teeth grinding or injuries during sporting events. There are many different styles and material choices available to choose from, and this can make it difficult to pick out the best one.

Our buyer's guide will go over the different types of dental guards, who needs them, why people wear them, and important considerations to keep in mind if you're shopping for a new one or your first one. This will allow you to pick out a new dental guard with confidence and ensure that you choose a good fit for your lifestyle.

Dental Guard Buying Guide

Defining Who Needs a Dental Guard

Dental guards can be worn by just about everyone. One of the most popular uses for dental guards is to protect both children and adult's teeth during contact sports. People who play football, soccer, basketball, ice hockey, lacrosse, and field hockey wear them.

Additionally, people who participate in non-contact sports like gymnastics or recreational activities like skiing, snowboarding, or mountain biking also wear them. Your dentist may recommend wearing them at night if you routinely grind your teeth because this protects your teeth from wear.

Why do People Wear Dental Guards

Your dental guard's primary function is to protect your mouth and your teeth from injury if you get hit in the face. A good dental guard can help to protect your teeth, gums, lips, and any other soft tissue in the event of an accident. They help to avoid broken teeth, chips, cracks, nerve damage, or even loss of a tooth. They also help to prevent premature wear and nerve exposure with people who grind their teeth when they sleep.

You can also wear a dental guard if you have braces. However, you may need to get a custom fitted one to help ensure that it fits comfortably over your existing hardware. Your orthodontist will help you choose the best dental guard, especially if you have fixed bridge work or existing braces.

Different Types of Dental Guards

Dental guards come in three main categories. Before we get to specific features, you want to choose a type of dental guard so you can narrow your choices down. This can make it less overwhelming when you begin your search.

1. Stock Dental Guards

The most common type of dental guard is a stock dental guard. You can buy them ready to wear straight out of the package. They're not custom fitted, and they generally come in a few different sizes. You can buy them over the counter at drug stores, sporting good stores, or department stores. These are the least expensive dental guards available.

However, most dentists don't recommend these stock dental guards because you really can't do much to them to get a custom fit. They're usually poor fitting, bulky, and they can make talking or breathing difficult. They also provide the barest amount of protection for your teeth and soft tissue.

2. Boil and Bite Dental Guards

The next tier up is the boil and bite dental guards. You can buy these dental protectors over the counter at many different sporting good stores, department stores, or drug stores. They are slightly more expensive, and you can get a semi-decent fit with these dental guards.

This type of dental guard is made from some form of thermoplastic material that softens when you place it in the boiling water. When it gets soft, you put it on your teeth and mold it using your fingers and your tongue. Boil and bite dental guards offer a moderate amount of protection for your teeth and soft tissue.

Custom Dental Guards

One of the most popular types of dental guards is more expensive, but it offers better protection. The custom dental guards are made by a dental office taking an exact molding of your teeth. They use this mold to pour and make a customized dental guard that fits snugly to your teeth.

These types of dental guards are more expensive and time-consuming because they're specially made for your mouth shape and teeth. However, this also means that they give you the highest amount of protection out of any of the three dental guard categories. Dentists recommend the custom dental guards over the other two types.

How to Wear a Dental Guard

Your dental guard typically only goes over your top teeth, and it leaves your bottom teeth open. However, if you have fixed dental work on your bottom teeth or if you have braces, your dentist might make you a dental guard for the bottom teeth as well. You simply slip it on before you play your sports or do your recreational activities and take it off when you're done.

Dental Guard Considerations

Now that you know why people wear dental guards, who should wear them, the different types of dental guards, and how to wear them, we'll move on to considerations you want to keep in mind when you're shopping.

Comfort Level

Generally, dental guards aren't very comfortable to wear for short or extended periods. They do take some getting used to. However, if your dental guard is loose, it'll be even more uncomfortable. It can make it difficult to breathe or talk. So, you have to find a balance between your comfort level and the level of protection the dental guard offers. Again, custom dental guards will most likely be the most comfortable, followed by boil and bite models.

You want to pick out a dental guard that is durable and able to withstand a lot of wear and tear. You'll apply a huge amount of pressure if you get hit in the jaw while you're wearing it or if you grind your teeth at night. This can be a more expensive investment, so it's worth it to find one that will last long enough for you to justify the money you spend on it.

Easy to Clean

Some dental guards are tough to clean and keep clean. Because you'll clean it after each use or every morning, you want something that isn't going to take up a lot of time. You should be able to rinse your dental guard out very well under warm water or with a sterile solution to keep it clean.

The way your dental guard fits is a very important consideration because this plays a big factor in how well the guard performs when you need it to. An ill-fitting dental guard isn't going to provide you enough protection if you get hit in the face. This is why many dentists and orthodontists recommend a custom-fitted dental guard.

Most dental guards are made out of a more rigid plastic material. This can reduce how comfortable you are when you wear them. It also provides more support and protection when you need it. There are also dental guards that are made out of a slightly more flexible plastic material, and these may be more comfortable to wear. They shouldn't contain latex or BPA.

Did you know that a lot of sports have specific dental guard requirements? A lot of it depends on whether you wear a face shield or not. If you do, your dental guard will generally be thinner in the front and thicker on the sides to protect you from upper or lower jaw hits. If you don't wear a facial shield, your dental guard should be thinner on the sides and thicker in the front to protect you from head-on collisions.

Choosing a dental guard can be an overwhelming task, but this buyer's guide gives you everything you need to know so that you can make an informed decision and purchase the dental guard that is going to work for your situation.
