Dish Rack Buying Guide

Dish Rack Image
Picture: Deluxe Chrome-plated Steel from Neat-O

A good dish rack is boon for kitchen convenience. It can dry your dishes, keep your counter dry and even store a few pieces at arm’s reach for frequent use, but not all designs are created equal and when this humble kitchen fixture is poorly appointed, difficult to clean, or unhygienic, it’s time to replace it with a model that’s up to the task.

Let’s look more at the features that make a dish rack great and how you can choose the perfect style for you.

What do dish racks really do?

Dish racks are designed to dry dishes by giving them a place to rest while water evaporates. A good dish rack collects drips in a tray and keeps them off the counter, or channels them directly into the sink, but it can serve as temporary storage for dishes, pots, utensils and other items that are reused frequently throughout the day.

Both tasks require a dish rack to be roomy enough to accommodate what you want to put it, well-organized to make retrieving dishes easy, simple enough to keep clean and customizable enough to meet your changing needs. Here are three styles to consider.

In Sink, Over Sink and Countertop Styles

In sink racks typically sit in one half of double sink or are kept on the counter and placed in the sink when filled. This style may not come with a rack underneath for drips since the sink will simply drain those away, but one is often included as an option. These racks are usually built with non-skid feet that keep them secure and elevate clean dishes off the bottom of the sink.

Over sink racks similarly send unwanted water down the drain, but sit on a frame that’s held in place by the sides of the sink. These are typically dried and put away between uses.

Countertop styles usually have a permanent place of honor either near the sink if they channel away water, but can go anywhere if they rely on a closed rack to contain drips.

Sink styles are somewhat limited in that they have fit your existing fixture and this limits your choices. Countertop styles are the most versatile, but use valuable space.

When you’re looking at options, measure carefully to narrow down your choices, and then consider these features as you shop.

Racks come in all sizes from ultra-compact for small apartments to bi-level behemoths that can accommodate a service for twelve. Most competently hold a meal’s worth of dishes for at least two or three people, but they won’t all large pots and pans.

The shape of the frame and the interior design have a role to play in how much a rack can comfortably hold, but the rough dimensions are the important factor. To choose an in-sink or over sink rack, measure the space your fixture will accommodate, remembering to leave a little room for handling and to allow adequate air circulation.

For countertop racks, measure both length and width, but also consider the height of the largest items you plan to put it in as well as any upper cabinets you’ll have to clear when measuring height.

Exterior Frame

Exterior frames range from nearly non-existent to highly structured. Low-profile racks that have no sides are easy to use and can store anywhere. They do require putting dishes into the rack’s integrated holders and aren’t particularly safe for fragile dishes otherwise, but they’re a great choice for small spaces.

For fragile dishes or large items, you’ll need a rack with high sides. Sometimes, however, structure can be the enemy when you just want a large spot to flip a pot over in. Measure your largest piece of cookware and compare it to the largest open space a rack offers, and then choose accordingly.

If you have the space, a double-decker rack can be a plus, but only if the placement of the top rack doesn’t interfere with the dishes you put underneath. Look for a model with one that’s removable.

Interior Design

Racks may come with frill-free interiors that allow you to just heap everything in without having to make it land is a special holder, or they may have specific nooks and crannies designed for every type of dish you own. Too many peaks and valleys can make it hard to load twelve plates in a rack that’s precisely structured for six plates and six glasses, but if you use your rack for air drying fine crystal glasses or dishes you want to be spot-free, holders are essential to ensure water flows off cleanly.

Interior design is mostly a matter of preference and it’s important to choose one that fits your lifestyle. There’s no embarrassment is admitting you don’t own crystal and like to just toss dishes in without thinking about it, but if that’s the case, an exquisitely structured rack will leave you frustrated. For safety however, always choose a model with a secure cutlery holder that’s high enough to protect your hands from knives.

Good drainage is the difference between a rack that stays clean and one that needs constant scrubbing. While they all need sanitizing periodically, the design shouldn’t encourage stagnant water that contributes the growth of mold. One-piece dish racks that don’t have solid sides drain from all angles, but styles with solid bottoms need enough drainage holes to eliminate standing water or should be slightly angled to allow water to drain easily into the sink.

Construction Material

Racks come in plastic, coated steel and plain stainless steel. Plastic racks are lightweight and inexpensive, but will melt if a hot pot is put inside.

Coated steel wire racks are a little sturdier and hold up better under heat. They also tend to be dishwasher safe and may come with special antimicrobial treatments to discourage the growth of mold. The problem with coated wire is that it deteriorates over time and when the coating cracks, it becomes nearly impossible to clean and can’t be rejuvenated.

Stainless steel racks are increasingly popular for both their aesthetic appeal and durability, but not all steel is the same quality and to get a model guaranteed to be rust-free, it can be costly. Still, the right rack could last a lifetime, making it a good investment.

Buying and Use Tips

• For countertop racks, be sure the sides of the dish rack are high enough to keep breakables secure. • Dishwasher safe racks are a plus. • Check the orientation of the drain funnel on the rack and mat to make sure it points in the right direction. Models with swivel spouts are available. • Cutlery and utensil holders should also have built-in drainage. • If you have small children in the home, check double racks for stability to avoid injuries. • Double racks with glass holders on the top are best for a spotless finish. • The more ornate a dish rack is, the more cleaning it will likely require. • Folding racks are great for dorms and RVs. • Simple wood racks are stylish, but more difficult to find because they require almost as much care as your dishes. • A dish brush or sponge holder saves space and allows them to dry fully between uses. • Stainless steel is attractive, but shows more fingerprints than other materials. • Soap residue shows more on black or stainless racks than white. • It’s possible for water to backflow through the second drain on a double sink and come into contact with dishes in a sink rack. Check around the drain daily for evidence of residue that suggests something other than clean water is present. • Over sink models should have a protective, non-skid coating over the frame to keep the rack secure and to prevent it from scratching the sink.

Today’s dish racks are attractive, functional and offer much needed drying space in the kitchen. Choose one that fits both your décor and lifestyle and let it become your new favorite kitchen helper.
