Dog Seat Cover Buying Guide

Dog Seat Cover Image

Dogs need to be with their people, and most of us adopt one or two or three of the furry creatures because we love and appreciate them too. They adore us, comfort us, entertain us, and keep us physically active and mentally alert. Because they’re such perfect companions, many of us want to take them everywhere we go—whenever and wherever that may be.

To be able to do that safely, comfortably, easily and regularly, you’ll want the key, must-have dog travel accessory—dog seat covers. However, not just any old seat covering will do. You’ll need the one that matches your dog, your car and your lifestyle expectations—and there’s a lot to consider.

The Nature of Dogs

By nature, our canine friends can’t help that they come with a few transportation challenges—lots of hair, bare paws, sharp toenails, wet noses, long tongues, whipping tails, a mouthful of teeth and four legs that can launch them several times their body length. They pant and bark, chew and dig, pace and scratch, sit-stay if trained, and might even lie down and relax if the right set of circumstances presents.

Just like us, some get motion sickness or have physical limitations or ailments. And, let’s face it: No matter how much we love them, they can be messy and smelly at times. Meanwhile, whatever surface they’re on—car seat or truck bench—can take a real beating.

Why Makeshift Dog Seat Covers Fail

That surface taking a beating extends to all sides. If a dog is in the back seat, for example, the at-risk surface area includes the backs and headrests of the front seat, the interiors of the car doors and windows, and the back seat’s back and head rests. Like any car or truck owner, dog owners are usually well aware that every tear or scratch represents another ding in their vehicle’s value. However, many homemade solutions are problematic and give you an idea of what to avoid in a purchased dog seat cover:

  • Blankets and towels may be soft and comfy, but they rumple with movement, end up on the floor, and can make fur seem to fly and multiply. If they get wet, they stay wet and can make the underlying surface soggy as well.
  • Old rugs are tougher, but they rarely cover an entire seat and are often unwieldy, dirty, and the wrong shape or size.
  • Sheets of plastic are waterproof, but they are also slippery, are nearly impossible to secure and can rarely withstand paws desperately seeking traction. They can become very hot or very cold, depending on weather conditions.
  • Cardboard is tougher, but it’s also slippery, rigid enough to cause tipping into the backseat leg area, yet weak enough to bend or collapse.
  • Pet beds, while made for dogs, won’t hold one who’s hyped to travel, and large beds won’t fit properly.
  • Many vehicles can’t handle a large crate or rigid barrier system. Many dogs can’t handle them either—especially for extended periods of time and particularly if they’re older dogs, large dogs, or dogs with joint issues or other medical problems.

At their best, makeshift seat coverings may protect your vehicle, but they do little to protect your canine companion and may in fact put him or her at risk. Quality dog seat covers will protect your vehicle and your beloved pet.

Traveling Safely With a Dog in the Front or Back Seat

Above all, you want your canine traveling companion to be safe. Dogs have no way of understanding the dangers they might face, but certain seat covers can make a difference. Here are a few scenarios for you to consider:

  • If you must come to an abrupt stop—slam on the brakes—will the seat cover help stop your dog from being hurled forward?
  • When you open the door, will any physical barrier prevent your dog from bolting past you or, for older dogs, falling from the vehicle?
  • Likewise, when a door or window opens, will anything keep the dog in the car until you can clip on a leash?
  • Will anything stop the dog from trying to move into forward passenger space and becoming a distraction to the driver?
  • Would the dog be able to dig through the seat cover if left alone for any period of time?
  • Could the dog’s collar, for example, become caught on the seat cover or its fasteners?
  • Does your vehicle have front or side airbags that might impact where and how your dog rides?
  • Will two or more small dogs be sharing the seat cover space?
  • How much wear and tear will the seat cover have to endure from water, mud, sand, dirt, food, liquids or bodily fluids, for example?

Taking a realistic view of the daily ins and outs of dog ownership should start giving you a pretty good idea of the features you want in your dog seat cover.

10 Features To Look for in a Dog Seat Cover

1. Coverage Options

For the amount of car interior covered, you can choose from the spare to the luxurious. If you’re looking for a single cover for the front passenger seat—typically a bucket seat—you can choose from

  • “shorty” pads that cover just the actual seat portion of the single bucket seat;
  • full-coverage singles that protect the bucket seat’s back and seat;
  • deluxe versions with padded barriers to keep smaller pets in the booster seating area; or
  • long, narrow covers that cover the passenger-side dash, floor and seat.

For back seats, coverage options include

  • the bench only;
  • the bench and floor;
  • the bench, floor and backs of front seats;
  • front seat-to-back seat hammocks with no sides;
  • front seat-to-back seat hammocks with raised sides to cover door interiors; and
  • single-dog variations that you can position in the back seat.

Models with side flaps offer a bit more coverage for the upright portion of the cushion. For versatility, some larger hammock-style options can serve in back cargo areas as well.

2. Split Coverage for Dual Use

If your four-legged friend might need to share space with a two-legged one, you may want to look for a backseat cover that converts. Some shorten with a zipper while others fold. A number continue to cover the entire seat but have Velcro-close openings that allow you to thread seat belts through the cover and secure people or child booster seats.

3. Zip-Up or Velcro-Up Sides

Plenty of hammocks cover the back of the front seats and the entire back seat but fail to protect door interiors. Those sides, however, can not only protect upholstery but also prevent furry passengers from activating window and lock controls. Many offer the ability to secure the hammock sides in an upright position with zippers, Velcro or buckle fasteners. This configuration can be a real help with multiple dogs or dogs who want to jump out—or fall out—before you have them under control.

4. Dog Seat Belts and Harnesses

Just about every organization or association concerned with the welfare of dogs urges pet owners to secure their pet while traveling.

  • Dogs trying to climb from the back seat to reach a front-seat passenger or driver are risky distractions.
  • In a sudden stop, according to Bark Buckle UP, a 60-pound dog traveling 35 miles per hour “will launch with a force of . . . 2,700 pounds.”
  • In an accident, loose dogs may run away, be injured or prevent their owners from receiving prompt medical care.
  • Dogs may jump from a vehicle before you have them leashed and under control.

Your dog seat cover should come with a short, heavy-duty lead that locks into a seat belt receiver. If it doesn’t come with one, it should at least accommodate one that you purchase separately. For travel, you can attach the lead to a harness so that your dog stays put.

5. Straps and Fastening Systems

A dog seat cover that fails to stay in place can’t do its job. That said, manufacturers design fastening systems that will make a seat cover easy to install and remove yet fit most modern vehicles. You want something that will stay in place, be easy to handle and last.

  • Many of the simpler, lower end designs rely on an elasticized edge that fits around the seat or elastic loops that slip over the headrest. While this keeps costs low, that tension may or may not be able to withstand your dog’s movement. Too, elastic will stretch and fatigue when exposed to extreme heat, extreme cold, frequent washings and heavy use.
  • Quite a few covers rely on fastening systems using straps—nylon, Velcro, leather or cotton—and easy-latch buckle fasteners. While leather may convey luxury to humans, to a dog, it may look more like a tasty rawhide after the initial car-ride excitement wears off and boredom sets in. Like elastic, cotton-based fasteners may stretch or sag with use.
  • Reinforced stitching and ample facings top and bottom where fasteners attach to the cover give extra strength. They help ensure that fastening systems distribute weight, stay attached, and continue to do their job without stressing and tearing the seat cover. The more reinforcement each fastener has, the more durable it will be.
6. Stay-Put Features

Since dogs move a lot, quality covers typically have additional elements to keep them in place:

  • Seat anchors are usually small, firm pillows or PVC cylinders on a strap attached to the cover. The anchors slip into the crack of the seat and use simple tension to hold the cover in place. Pillows may be more upholstery-friendly than PVC edges if one slips out of place.
  • Side retainer flaps are simply tabs that can help with side-to-side movement.
  • Seatbelt accesses may use zippers, Velcro or both. They allow passengers to use the seat belts over top of the cover but also help keep the cover in place. Many use waterproof zippers.
  • Nonslip or grippy material may back portions of the seat cover to help prevent slippage.
7. Construction Materials, Layers, Padding and Cleaning

You’ll eventually want to be able to clean your seat cover. A few key materials that manufacturers use are heavy-duty cotton twill or oxford cloth and heavy-duty nylon or polyester for the covering. They also use quite a bit of layered pet-safe polyurethane and neoprene for waterproofing, for example, and rubber for nonskid backing. You may also see tightly woven PVC fiber. Luxury covers often have additional padding—cotton or synthetic—quilting for comfort, special trims like leather or metallic accents.

Those layers and reinforced edges do add bulk, and specialty features may require custom care. While most versions are machine washable, manufacturers may recommend the gentle cycle—something to consider since large models measure about 54” x 58” and extra-large ones may be 60” x 64” or larger.

8. Proofing and Resistance Caveats

Manufacturers are doing their best to cover all the bases. Dog seat covers come with any number of caveats detailing their performance and care:

  • Waterproof—It may have polyurethane or rubber membranes inside.
  • Water or Stain Resistant—It has a coating that helps to repel liquids and dirt, but prolonged exposure may still make it wet or stain.
  • Tearproof or Scratchproof—Materials are extra-heavy duty.
  • Machine Washable—The gentle cycle may be preferred.
  • Nonslip—Rubber or another nonslip material is applied to the underside.
  • Nonskid—Some manufacturers apply a top coating to give dogs traction so they don’t slip.
9. Mesh Ventilation Window

Some higher end models ventilate the forward side of their hammock-style dog seat covers with a mesh window. Reinforced, the fabric mesh allows more air flow to your pet. It also provides a little more visibility for your dog to be able to see you even while lying down—and for you to see him or her. While it’s a nice feature, be sure the mesh is tough enough to handle years of nose pokes and the occasional paw.

10. Storage Pockets

Although the capacity is usually limited, some dog seat covers do come with snap-close pockets or zip storage pouches. They’re convenient spots to store a backup slip lead, a collapsible water bowl, some pet wipes or a few clean-up bags. If your pup is a chewer, however, be sure pocket snaps won’t become choking hazards.

How To Find the Right Dog Seat Cover for Your Dog

Whether you’re simply a dog lover who wants to be able to humor your 10-year-old elderly gentleman golden with a weekly ride or a serious dog competitor transporting your Mach-qualified Shetland sheepdogs to training sessions and an agility trial each weekend, there’s a dog seat cover for your dog, your vehicle and your budget. Inexpensive models start at less than $20, and many don’t exceed $50—even large ones. If you must have a prestige brand name—Carhartt or Weathertech—for example—you can expect costs to rapidly escalate. For custom covers, double brand-name costs. Luckily, affordable options abound, so make a list of your must-have features, and start shopping. Your dog’s tail is wagging, and he’s put on his happy face.
