Duty Belt Buying Guide

When it comes to buying a quality duty belt, the first thing that comes to mind is dependability and comfort. Of course, durability is the rule of the day. No matter if you are a policeman, fireman, any other endeavor that requires the use of a duty belt, this buyer's guide will provide you with some interesting details to age you in your search.

Duty belts have been around for quite some time and their origins are widely known. From starting off as being called a Sam Browne, this name was given after the British General Sir Samuel Browne(1824-1901). The traditional legend is that Mr. Brown designed the belt after his left arm was severed during battle. The original design was made to stabilize his belt for the one-handed drawing of a saber sword. The traditional definition is the Sam Browne is a belt with a shoulder strap running diagonally across the chest. Although this is the history, Sabres are no longer the weapon of choice as firearms have become the obvious selection. Having a beautiful history behind duty belts add to the valor and magnificence of them. Although there are some agencies that still wear the Sam Browne shoulder strap today, it is to be noted that most of the fame and popularity comes from TV shows, such as COPS. More often than not, officials become interested after watching such a show to purchase the Sam Browne shoulder strap. In the 1950s and 60s, the common name for duty belts was, in fact, The Sam Browne. As with the improvement of the duty belts due to various operations and functions, there has also been an innovation and the materials used to create the duty belts

Although there are various materials when it comes to quality duty belts, not all materials are the same. Nylon belts are the most commonly used finish. For those with a smaller budget and looking for easily maintained belts then nylon is the material of your choice. With being less rigid and providing a seemingly better support for back pain, nylon belts are a clear choice. With nylon, there are manufacturers who create nylon belts with the appearance of looking like leather belts. This is made to give off a professional finish. With the lifespan of roughly two to three years, nylon belts are made for performance and not looks. When it comes to appearance, high upkeep, and maintenance there are the more expensively styled high gloss belts. With being a special-order item, high gloss belts require daily upkeep to avoid tarnishing and other such effects on the finish. High gloss belts are generally made for those with whom the uniform gives off magnificence, such as honor guards and some Highway Patrol officers. Definitely not the type of belt to be worn by anyone engaging in the rough day to day work. Leather belts are generally relied upon when it comes to combining appearance and durability. Quality leather belts can last upwards of 10 years. Having the basket weave design or plain leather, leather duty belts are the obvious choice when it comes to maintaining a good belt and having the appearance of the same.

While selecting the proper material for your duty belt, it is important to realize there are also accessories that must be attached to your belt. At the outset, most duty belts will be attached to your inner belt. This is done by a keeper. Keepers are available in the same finish that you choose your belt in and not all keepers are made with the same fashion. Some may use the keeper to space out various components of gear on the belts. Looking for quality and dependability, the keeper system is the better choice. In times past, many individuals with use the hook and loop system to provide the necessary connection between the inner belt and a duty belt. But having such a short life span and not being as dependable, this is what led to your modern-day keeper. Not having a keeper for your duty belt is what makes the belt sag and a gear having a continual shift. Have you ever seen an individual with a sagging duty belt? This is because there is no keeper on the duty belts. Depending on the use of the duty belt for you is what will lead you to pick various qualities and various styles. From having a first aid pouch, a cell phone pouch, or even a glove pouch, these are just a few of the necessary accessories that you will add to your duty belt. The most frequently used accessory for a duty belt is a firearm, so having a firearm holster is a necessary accessory as well as having a magazine pouch. Duty belts come in various-sizes and have various uses.

Selecting the right size for your duty belt mainly depends on the size of the belt you are currently wearing. As a traditional rule to follow, the average size your duty belt need to be four to five inches larger than your pants waist size. This is usually because you will be wearing various types of gear, such as holsters. Being able to measure your current belt is always a good thing. By simply taking your belt off and placing it on a flat surface, you will then measure the far end of the buckle to the hole used for the fit test. By rounding the measurement to the nearest inch you will then come to the actual circumference of your waist with pants on. This is the exact size belt that you need to order. All standard duty belts have a width of two and a quarter inch. All manufacturers automatically will add extra length to the duty belt and this is to accommodate the belt while being worn over an inner belt. Of course, one size doesn't fit all and the buyer will be the beneficiary by taking a few steps to determine the actual waist size. This is the most obvious way to make sure that the product being bought is satisfactory for the wearer.
