Electric Log Splitter Buying Guide

The image of Paul Bunyan is firmly implanted into the collective American memory. In our society, we like lumberjacks because lumberjacks are tough and manly. We picture lumberjacks as burly and strong folks with the heavy plaid shirt. It is not until people actually try to split logs on their own that they really how utterly hard and draining it is. Besides the danger or using an axe, an afternoon of log splitting can lead to chafed and blistered hands. One simply cannot split dozens of logs in a day manually and still get the job done, but thankfully you do have to do the job on your own.

When it comes to splitting logs, there are three primary options. One can choose between a regular axe, a gas-powered log splitter and an electric log splitter. Gas log splitters are expensive to purchase and operating them require even more investment due to the requirement for gas to power it. Additionally, gas log splitters require more maintenance than an electric one, further driving up the cost of ownership. Electric log splitters help reduce some of the physical labor associated with splitting wood, saving people both time and burden, as well as making for a more safe experience, provided that they operate the machine properly.

Buyers should keep in mind that not all electric log splitters are created the same. There are various considerations to keep in mind when purchasing an electric log splitter that can impact the user's experience.

Splitting Force

Electric log splitters have different measures of force for each splitter, which are denoted in tons. The higher the tonnage of the splitting force, the larger the log that can be split. This is a measurement of the pressure placed on the log while cutting. Electric log splitters start at four tons. At the level of force, a log with a diameter of six inches can be split. Electric log splitters can range all the way up to 30 tons in force, and, in fact, some have even more force. This level of force can split a log that is two feet or more in diameter. While it is tempting to simply buy the most powerful electric log splitter that is out there, bigger sizes may not necessarily always be the best path to follow. Buyers may not simply need the level of force in some splitters and can easily get the job done with a less powerful and cheaper electric log splitter. Using a higher force splitter on a smaller log may slow cutting times to a crawl and they cost more to boot. However, wood that is either wet or difficult to split may require a higher tonnage of pressure to successfully cut. Additionally, wood that is harder will require a higher amount of pressure to cut.

Type of Motor

In addition to the tonnage of pressure, the type of motor can also dictate the type of log that an electric log splitter can cut. The more power that a motor can generate, the more difficult of a log that can be cut, both in terms of size and hardness. There are some drawbacks, however to a higher power motor. The higher power a motor is, the less it is able to be operated with a common household current. If a higher power motor is unable to operate with a common household current, then it is more likely to require more unconventional types of power sources which may not be as energy efficient. While this will still not require the same expense of a gas log splitter, it will still raise the costs to operate. In selecting an electric log splitter, one should be conscious of the tradeoff involving the motor. Specifically, the higher power of a motor, the more the machine can cut, but at a higher cost of electricity. Also, higher amp motor require thicker and bulkier extension cords to power.

Ease of Operation

Electric log splitters operate in different ways, and some are easier than others. Buyers should be conscious of how they actually use the machine, both with regard to how effective it is, as well as how safe it is. Some machines operate with one hand and others operate with two hands. One hand machines may be less safe to operate. When one uses both hands to operate the machine, it is more safe, as one has more control over the splitter and no hands free. Both hands on the machine reduce the risk of injury, as the operator is more comfortable when operating the machine and does not have any hands free to possibly get injured. Also, a machine that is easier to operate, in general, is less of a safety risk. The more straightforward a machine is, the less user error can cause a safety mishap. Cutting logs is one situation where multitasking may not actually be a good thing because this can be a dangerous machine, which requires the utmost attention and precision.

Another feature that makes an electric log splitter easier to operate is a built-in log lift. Most electric log splitters are horizontal, as opposed to vertical, and a log lift reduces the amount of physical burden necessary to load the log into the splitter. The other alternative is for a vertical log splitter, which allows for the machine to cut the log while it is still on the ground and is certainly easier to use. If the amount of physical labor required to operate the machine is a concern, one should consider purchasing a vertical model.

Ease of Transport

Needless to say, it is easier to bring the splitter to the log than it is to bring the log to the splitter. Therefore, how easy it is to move the splitter from point A to point B will dictate how useful a splitter is. Machines that are lightweight and compact will be easier to transport, but possibly at the expense of tonnage of pressure and amps of motor power. When purchasing a heavier machine, one should look to the design to see how easy the machine will be to move. For example, some machines are either equipped with wheels or allow for the attachment of wheels to make the machine more conducive to transport.

Cycle Time

Cycle time refers to the amount of time it takes for an electric log splitter to cut a log. The last thing one wants to do is spent an inordinate amount of time waiting for one log to be cut when there is an entire pile of wood waiting to be split. This is where a deal that seems too good to be true will come back to bite. If you have bought a high tonnage machine for a cheap price, the discount has to come from somewhere and it will show up in cycle time. This is one area that you will want to find a machine that takes a Goldilocks approach of "just right" because a machine that works too fact will tire a user very quickly. You simply do not want a machine that can cut logs much faster than you can load the logs. Cycle times usually run from 10 to 20 seconds. This is important when one has hundreds of logs to split.
