Folding Walker Buying Guide

Walkers are useful for people who experience pain, have trouble with balance or are afraid of falling while walking. One of the downsides to using a walker is that the equipment can be heavy and cumbersome to travel with. If someone can’t bring the walker out and about, they may become socially isolated. A folding walker is portable and offers independence for people who need support to stay mobile.

Do You Need A Walker?

A walker serves as a mobility aid if you have trouble putting all of your weight on your legs and feet. This may occur if you have: • An injury • A wound • Arthritis • Pain from circulation problems • A prosthesis • Post-operative weakness

Sometimes, limited mobility can come from fatigue or exhaustion. If you have a respiratory condition, a chronic illness, a systemic condition such as Parkinson’s disease or weakness, you might prefer to use a walker for your safety. People with low blood pressure, dizziness, slow reflexes or neurological conditions may also benefit from using a walker.

What Is A Folding Walker?

Standard walkers are usually made of a sturdy, lightweight material. They tend to be the least expensive type of walker because they don’t have any bells and whistles. At approximately 25 inches wide and 32 inches tall, walkers can be large and unwieldy.

Folding walkers collapse to take up less space. You can store them easily when they’re not in use or transport them in the trunk of a car. Folding walkers may be lighter in weight than their standard counterparts, making them easier to lift and move around.

What To Look For In A Folding Walker

Once you have decided that you need a folding walker, you might wonder what other features you might want. Many walkers come with accessories and extra elements that make life easier and more comfortable.

Wheels

The wheels on a walker are usually 5 or 3 inches in diameter. Larger wheels may be better for maneuvering over textured surfaces. They may move too quickly on slick surfaces, such as hardwood.

Fixed-wheel walkers usually have two wheels attached to the front legs. The wheels don’t swivel. Instead, the user must lift up the rear legs and steer by guiding the frame in the direction in which he or she wants to move.

Some front-wheel walkers have ski glides on the rear legs. These let the devices move more easily over floors and carpets.

Walkers with three and four wheels are often referred to as rollators. These have swivel wheels, which are often larger than those on standard walkers. Rollators usually come with hand brakes, and they may even feature a seat.

With all of these bells and whistles, you might think that a rollator isn’t very portable. Most rollators, however, fold conveniently. They’re ideal for indoor and outdoor use.

Comfortable Grips

The hand grips make up a small portion of the walker, but they must withstand a large amount of weight. The shape of the grips can affect your comfort. You can purchase grips separately to place on standard walkers and rollators.

Foam, latex and textured grips are ideal for sweaty hands. Larger grips may be more comfortable for people with arthritis or nerve pain.

Forearm gutter attachments let you place weight on your forearms instead of your wrists. They can be added to a walker for people who have hand or wrist problems.

Adjustable Height

Walkers can be purchased for adults or children. A walker with an adjustable height may be the most comfortable. Measure the user while they’re wearing shoes to determine what size walker to get.

While you’re standing by the walker with relaxed shoulders, your elbows should bend about 15 degrees when you’re holding the handles. Another way to tell if the walker is the right height is to stand inside of it with your arms at your sides. Your wrist should align with the top of the grip.

Folding Mechanism

Closing the walker can be awkward, especially if you need to keep your weight on it while you’re folding it. A walker with a one-button folding mechanism lets you collapse it quickly and easily. The button or handle should be large and easy to access, and the walker should not feel stiff while you fold it.

How To Choose The Best Folding Walker For You

You might want to consult with your physician or therapist before spending money on a walker. A medical professional will recommend the best option based on your needs.

Consider whether you’ll use the walker outside or indoors. A walker with wheels may be preferable for moving around outside. The wheels should be large and rugged enough to glide over uneven terrain. Indoors, wheels may move too quickly for you, and you may prefer a standard walker.

Folding hemi walkers are available for people who need added stability. They’re lighter and more compact than full-sized walkers. They’re more supportive than a cane, however.

Follow height and weight guidelines when purchasing a walker. Most have a maximum weight limit of 300 pounds. If you’re taller or heavier than average, you’ll need to ensure that your folding walker can accommodate you. Maintaining proper posture while walking is important for your health and endurance.

Measure your storage space before buying a walker. This will help you make sure that you can stow your walker and it won’t become another obstacle that you have to navigate around.

Ultimately, your budget, degree of mobility and comfort level will help you decide which type of folding walker to buy. If you simply need help while using the bathroom, you might want to choose a low-priced, standard folding walker. A folding walker with a stable base is helpful for people who need assistance while transferring from a wheelchair to a bed, sofa or car.

Be aware that you’ll have to lift this type of walker every few steps if it doesn’t have wheels. If you move around for long periods of time, a rollator with a seat will help you conserve your energy.
