Food Chopper Buying Guide

Introduction

The general purpose of food choppers products is to make chopping food less messy. In the case of onions and hot peppers, it also prevents tearing up. Also, very small foods, such as nuts tend to fling around and some pieces end up being wasted. The choppers prevent that as well.

If you have kids, choppers are also very safe for them to use without too much risk of cutting themselves. If you don’t have very good hand coordination and/or don’t have very good knife skills, they’re a good way to prevent you from cutting yourself as well. The last thing you want is for you, or anyone living in your household to end up in the emergency room with a need for stitches due to either of the above.

Electric choppers are great for making rough chopping quick, easy and painless. They are also good for making purees. Instead of taking at least five minutes with a knife, all you need to do is press one to a couple of buttons and it’s done in almost no time at all.

General Forms of Choppers

1. Swiss pull choppers

Instead of you having to push down to chop, swiss pull chopper blades are similar to the pull-string on a lawnmower. Its blades spin by pull action. Another advantage is that it has a non-skid ring. All you have to do is rest one hand on top of the lid while you pull the handle with the other.

It works best if you make a lot of soft side dishes such as coleslaw and/or tend to eat a lot of soft fruit, such as peaches and plums.

Most swiss pull choppers have removable blades. However, since they’re hard to dry, it’s best if they’re lightly washed with a washclothe and antibacterial soap.

2. Mini food processors

Mini food processors are great for rough chopping, such as apples and zucchini. They’re also great for chopping garlic, making purees, helping with homemade salad dressings, salsa, and mayonnaise. Most of them have auto-reverse blades and make three-cup servings.

Most have different buttons for grind and chop. Most processors are also dishwasher-friendly. However, one disadvantage is that they don’t knead dough so they’re not best for baking. So if you bake a lot, what you need is the larger version of the mini processors.

3. Serrated tooth-edge manual choppers

This vintage tool is ideal for a quick chopping of hard boiled eggs, nuts, cooked foods, and making homemade tuna. It’s also ideal if you bake a lot. It’s also very good for cutting biscuits, cookies and pastries. If you eat a lot of meat, it’s good for helping to tenderize it. It’s best went used in a bowl with a flat bottom, however, it can easily be used on cutting boards as well.

It’s the tool for you if you’re also the kind of person who prefers to keep things as simple as possible. Tooth-edge manual choppers just have their own handles and are not attached to a jar-like device. However, since the blades are not attached to a device, you will need to exercise a lot of caution to ensure that neither you or anyone in your household cuts themselves and ends up having to make a trip to the emergency room. However, since it’s made with stainless steel, it’s best to wash it manually.

4. Chopper/slicer/dicer

Chopper/slicer/dicers are ideal if you eat a lot of onions, tomatoes, bell peppers, large mushrooms, etc. However, it is not ideal for softer fruits such as peaches or soft tomatoes. The cutting grid cuts in one swift motion. The different cutting grids vary slightly in inches for the differing cutting forms, such as slices and strips. Some come with their own storage containers. All parts of most chopper/slicer/dicers are dishwasher safe. The blades tend to become dull over time but you can usually purchase new ones through their manufacturers online.

5. Manual nut choppers

Like its name suggests, manual nut choppers are ideal if you eat a lot of nuts and are for nuts only. They’re also ideal if you bake a lot and like to put nuts on top of your desserts or like them on your ice cream. Most of them work on every type of nut from shelled ones to pecans. The top part of most of them needs to be handwashed but the bottom is usually dishwasher safe.

Conclusion

The kind of chopper you need should depend on what’s in your main diet. For example, if you eat a lot of fruits and vegetables, a mini processor is better. If you do a lot of baking, on the other hand, it’s the larger version that you need. The last thing you want is to waste your money on something that you probably won’t end up using very much. If you want to get a chopper as a gift make sure you’re at least somewhat familiar with the other person’s main diet. Unless that is your intent for whatever reason, you don’t want it end up being re-gifted or given away to charity.

Also, make sure that the chopper you get will be safe enough for you and your household. For example, if you have young children living with you, a tooth-edged manual chopper would probably not be a good idea for you at this time. The blades are not attached to anything except a handle and there’s too many opportunities for ending up in the emergency room for stitches or cauterization.

The five forms of choppers listed above is not an exhaustive list. It is simply a small list of the most basic and popular choppers that people currently purchase and own. They have become extremely popular since the turn of the century due to taking up less time than the traditional method of using knives only. And also because of safety issues with young children and those who have coordination issues in the hands.

However, like everything else in the kitchen, one single chopper can’t currently cover absolutely everything from baking to chopping onions and nuts. That’s why you will need to consider your main diet when shopping for a chopper.
