Garden Rake Buying Guide

There is nothing more ubiquitous than the garden rake. They are so common that anyone with even the smallest patch of grass or the tiniest of gardens has one. But buying a rake — or a set of rakes — is not such an easy decision, as there are many type of rakes to consider as well as many features.

Types of Garden Rakes

The first thing you must decide upon when buying a garden rake is what type of garden rake you should buy, which depends on what you plan on doing with the rake. Here are the major types of garden rakes and their purposes:

Leaf Rake

Also known as a lawn rake, a leaf rake is a device that is specifically designed to gather leaves, typically from grass and other similar plant life. They come with a handle and long prongs (also known as tines) that shoot out of the rake in the shape of a triangle. The length of these prongs can vary, and they can be made out of one of the following materials:

  • Plastic
  • Metal
  • Bamboo

Each of these materials have their advantages and disadvantages. Plastic prongs are good for gathering large amounts of leaves, but they are not the most durable material. Metal prongs are more durable but they can also be more destructive to fragile plant life. This is where bamboo prongs come into play, as they are the gentlest type of prong.

Shrub Rake

Shrub rakes are very similar to leaf rakes. They are so similar, in fact, that you could consider them a subset of leaf rakes. Like a leaf rake, a shrub rake has a handle and prongs that come out of it in the shape of triangle. But a shrug rake has far fewer prongs than a leaf rake. This is so that it can fit into tight spaces, such as shrubbery and gates.

Bow Rake

Also known as a level head rake, a bow rake is a device that has a handle and a set of short and thick metal prongs that come out of it. Bow rakes are used for manipulating loose but heavy materials such as the following:

  • Dirt
  • Gravel
  • Mulch
  • Sand

Bow rakes are terrific for various stages of planting. First, they can loosen and break up soil, and then you can also use one to spread mulch over your garden evenly. They are further great for gathering heavy debris. They can even gather leaves, though this is not what they are best at.

Hand Rake

You can think of a hand rake as miniaturized bow rake. It also has similarities to a shrug rake. A hand rake has a very small handle that you hold in one hand like a hammer, with a small number of metal prongs sticking out from it. This is the type of rake to use when working around very delicate plant life, such as flowers. While you cannot collect much materials with a hand rake because of its small size, you have very finite control over it. An additional drawback of a hand rake is that you must use it while on your knees.

Thatch Rake

A thatch rake is a device that is specifically designed to improve the health of your lawn, by breaking up and clearing thatch. These rakes have handles and two set of sharp blades on both sides of the handle. With one side of this rake, you break up thatch that can form in your lawn for a variety of reasons. Then, with the other side of the rake, you collect the thatch.

By thatching your lawn, your grass will be better equipped to receive sunshine, water, fertilizer and air. Which will make it healthier and more beautiful.

Important Features of Garden Rakes

When shopping for a garden rake, you should consider the following important features:

Material Quality

While plastic prongs can be useful in a leaf rake, as a general rule you should avoid plastic in other components of the rake. This is because plastic is far less durable than wood or metal. Plastic rakes are so fragile that many consider them disposable. So, while they may be far cheaper than metal and wood rakes, unless you only plan on using them once or twice, they will likely cost you more money in the long run.

When it comes to the handle of the rake, you may want to choose a wood one as opposed to metal for a number of reasons. First, a wood handle will not bend like a metal one can. Also, you can reuse a wood handle if the prong attachments break. Finally, a metal handle can be unpleasant to hold in cold weather.

Size and Weight

Size and weight matters when it comes to a rake. You want a rake that works for your height and strength. This means going to a store and trying them out. If many members of your family will be raking, this may necessitate the buying of multiple rakes. Alternatively, you could find a rake that has an adjustable-length handle and and/or adjustable-length prongs.

How To Select a Garden Rake(s)

It is important to understand that one rake may not serve all your needs. Depending on what you will be using the rake for, you may need a set of rakes. After determining the type of rake(s) you need, you should then find the highest quality rake you can afford, with the best materials. Then, make sure that the rake you select is comfortable for you to use.
