Gel Ink Pen Buying Guide

Gel Ink Pen Image
Picture: Gel Pens | from PAPER MATE

Right from the time you start using a pen in school, to the time that you spend writing in your adulthood, finding a pen that works well for you is something that is essential. If you are trying to figure out which pen you or should go in for, there are a number of factors that one must take into consideration, even if it is a relatively small purchase. Finding the right pen isn’t only good for the duration that you use it, but also for the future when you want to buy comfortable pens to use.

Types Of Pens

Before going in for a pen that fits your style, you will first want to be acquainted with a few kinds of pens that are commonly found in most stores. There are three main kinds of pens, which constitute gel pens, ballpoint pens and felt tip pens.

Ballpoint

Ballpoint pens tend to be a lot more common and contain a certain mechanism to make writing smoother. They are called ballpoint pens because of the ball that is situated at the tip of the pen, allowing the ink to flow in a more precise manner.

Felt Pens

Felt tip pens are the ones that are commonly used in art projects and for drawing. Writing on paper is not usually done with this kind of pen. Sketch pens and colored pens are also mainly made using a felt tip since it makes the process of free flow a lot smoother.

Gel Pens

Gel pens are considered to be some of the smoothest kind of pens that are ideal for writing. These kinds of pens tend to be a lot darker because of the type of ink that is used and the opacity that it comes out with. The quality of writing that these pens produce is a lot more fluid as it would seem, which is why gel ink pens are considered to be one of the more preferred kinds of pens on the market. Be it for the purpose of writing at school, or penning down documents at work, gel pens enable you to work better and smoother.

Additionally, few other kinds of pens can also be found on the market that is used for a variety of purposes. These aren’t ideal for everyday use, and sometimes only have limited functionality as compared to other kinds of pens.

Fountain Pens

Fountain pens are the traditional pens that were used in the olden days. These pens aren’t used commonly nowadays because of the high maintenance that one has to keep up to be able to write with them efficiently, Nowadays, these pens are mainly kept for novelty purposes, although there are the select few who still like writing with these pens, and who don’t mind the upkeep that comes along with it.

Using A Gel Ink Pen

Because of the boldness of the ink that one gets when they use this kind of pen, gel ink pens are relatively preferred when it comes to important documents. The tip of gel pens is relatively thinner as compared to other pens, making them ideal for precise and non-bulky looking work. Written words also tend to seem a lot neater when written with this kind of pen, which is why corporates also tend to have gel ink pens in their offices as compared to other types. People who mainly write down their signatures on essential documents also tend to prefer using gel ink pens over other kinds.

Buying A Gel Ink Pen

There are of course a few things that one must take into consideration before they buy a gel ink pen. These mainly constitute the following:

  1. Comfort

One of the first things that must always be taken into consideration when buying a pen is the comfort factor. Not everyone will find one single pen comfortable, and this is sometimes a process that takes time. Try out a number of pens and try writing with them to see which one is more comfortable and fits your grip better. It may be something that has a padded lining around the pen or something that is sleek and smooth. There is no one size fits all when it comes to this, and finding the pen that is most comfortable for you is something that you will be thankful for!

  1. Quality

The second factor that must be taken into consideration before buying a gel ink pen is the quality of the pen. Often, people face problems with smudging, especially when using a lower quality pen. This is something that can be determined, even after a short test to see whether or not the quality is excellent. One easy way is to write something and check the back of the paper that you have written on. If the ink is seeping through and can be seen clearly on the other side, it is most probably low-quality ink. Another way to determine if it is lower in quality is the drying speed. If the ink of a pen doesn't dry quick enough, it could mean that it is lower in quality as well. Moreover, having a pen with ink that dries slower is never ideal since you always run a higher risk of smudges while writing in this instance.

  1. Price Range

Sometimes, buying a pen is about getting your money’s worth, which is why choosing a gel ink pen can sometimes be heavily dependent on the price range that you are looking at. You would be surprised to know the wide price range that gel ink pens have, which is why it is incredibly easy to find a pen, no matter what price range one sets down. You have regular pens like Bic, Peper Mate that sell regular pens in some of the lowest price ranges, and then you have the brands like Parker, Mont Blanc and others who also sell gel ink pens, but ones that go into the hundreds range.

  1. Brand

If you are looking to buy a pen that is foolproof and which can serve its function well, buying one from a reputed brand is always an excellent way to ensure that you get what you need. There are plenty of store brands that sell regular and signature pens that are available on the market, and a simple look at the stationary aisle can help you figure out which are the more prominent brands that are being sold there.

  1. Re-use

The re-usability of a pen is sometimes one of the most overlooked factors that need to be taken into consideration when trying to buy a pen. Some pens act as one-time use pens, which means that there is no way to refill the ink that was once used for it. The other kind constitutes refillable pens, which can mainly be re-used by simply buying a refill that tends to be a lot cheaper than the pen itself. More inexpensive pens tend to be one-time use pens, while the more expensive variants tend to have options that allow you to re-use them. Both have their budgeting to account for when buying a pen. If you need to buy a pen that you are going to use for a while, then buying something that is refillable is generally a lot more worth it in the long run. However, if you are purchasing a pen just for a one-time event and don’t want something for prolonged use, a one time use or non-refillable pen is usually worth it.

When buying a pen, it is always important to try it out at the time of purchase to ensure that the pen is in proper working condition and fits your grip well. This can help you always get the right pen that you need every time you go to purchase one.
