Glass Kettle Buying Guide

Kettles are making a comeback! Whether it’s for tea or water for your French press, quit boiling water in a plain old pot, and invest in a beautiful glass kettle. If you aren’t sure how to choose the right one, keep reading. We’ve answered a few questions you might have during your search for the best glass kettle.

Stovetop or Electric

Old school or new school? Almost all of your other choices boil down to this one. It’s a choice between simplicity and modern features.

A stovetop kettle uses the heat of your stove to boil the water. The benefit of this type is there’s little to break or go wrong unless your stove itself goes on the fritz. They’re also a lot easier to store because there’s no cord or base. They’re also slower than electric kettles

An electric kettle has a base that plugs in and heats the water in the kettle. These are nice because you don’t take up room on your stove and you can set up a tea or coffee station elsewhere. The downside to electric is that you’ve got to store all the components that go with it, and if a part of it breaks down, you’ll have to replace the entire unit.

Glass doesn’t really mean glass, or at least, not glass like you think. For most modern tea kettles, glass is tempered or altered to be more heat resistant and shatterproof. Traditional glass can’t handle temperature fluctuations, so that vintage glass tea kettle may not perform as well as the one you can get now.

Some “glass” is genuinely shatterproof. This material mimics glass, doesn’t leach harmful chemicals into the water the way plastic might, but can still handle the heat of boiling water. It doesn’t alter the taste of your water either.

It’s best to find models with handles that are heat-proof, so you don’t burn your hand trying to pick it up. Metal is a terrible idea, so stay away from those.

The higher the wattage, the quicker your electric kettle will boil. The downside is that higher wattages are often more expensive. Most kettles have a wattage between 1000 and 1800 watts (necessary to be more efficient than stovetop kettles).

To give you an idea of wattage, a 1500 watt kettle will boil a liter of water in about four minutes. If you live alone, you may not need that much power, but if you have a family, you’ll be grateful for faster boil times.

Heating Elements

Electric kettles should have covered or protected heating elements. If the element is exposed, you’re more likely to injure yourself or start a fire because particles can get down into the component and catch fire.

A covered element will last longer and perform better than exposed. We recommend using the stovetop kettle if you can’t find a covered heating element that suits your needs.

Other Safety Features

There’s a lot that can go wrong with an electric kettle so having more safety features is a good thing.

If your kettle continues to boil past the boiling point, water evaporates, and it can damage the interior of your kettle. Boil dry protection means the kettle turns itself off once water reaches the boiling point. If you forget about it for a long time, this might feel inconvenient, but it does protect the bottom and sides of your kettle from degrading due to dry heat.

A lid that locks and a lid that releases steam slowly are other useful features. They prevent accidental spills from a cap falling off during pouring, and they protect you from burns from quickly escaping steam.

Cordless serving might strike you as only a convenience, but this is an important safety feature as well. When you’re serving your water, you don’t want the cord to be a trip hazard or risk catching on something and causing you to spill your boiling water.

Size and Weight

Glass isn’t quite as heavy as some of the stainless steel models, but it can be heavy if you choose one too large for you. Average kettle size is about four cups, but if you’re mostly alone, you can get away with a smaller size and lower wattage. If you frequently entertain guests, you may want something as large as the “extra large” kettles, ones that serve eight cups or more at one time. Be sure you get a comparable wattage to heat water quickly and efficiently.

Extra Features

Electric glass kettles frequently have controls on the base element that tells you water temperature, time, and other information. More elaborate displays cost more, but if you’re forgetful or particular about how things go, they can be a lifesaver.

Some make sounds that let you know when the water is boiling. If you don’t have an automatic shut-off feature, a tone to alert you when water is boiling can help prevent damage to your kettle when the water boils out of it.

Why Choose Glass

Glass is so much more visually appealing than other types of materials. You can see the status of your water as it boils, and it’s easier to gauge how much water is still in the pot. If you entertain a lot, a glass kettle can be a beautiful, exciting kitchen detail for your guests as you put together tea or coffee.

Glass, especially heat tempered glass such as that made by Schott Inc, are temperature insulated and don’t get as hot as other types of glass. There are a few double walled glass models as well if you want the presentation, but are worried about the heat of the walls.
