GPS Watch Buying Guide

Most people are familiar with devices that track your activities such as the number of steps that you take, your heart rate and the calories that you eat. GPS watches, by contrast, track your location in the world no matter what your activity might be. These watches use GPS technology to communicate with satellites in space, which allows them to monitor your location, the distance that you travel, your speed, your altitude, and your pace, making them great for athletes, hikers, and people who enjoy camping. If you are wanting to purchase a GPS watch, here are some things that you might want to consider.

The frequency of your outdoors activities

Fitness trackers do not have to communicate with satellites to provide their feedback, but they are not as accurate as GPS watches. One important consideration for you if you are trying to decide between a GPS watch and a fitness tracker is how often your activities take you outside. GPS watches are able to achieve better connections with satellites when you are outdoors. If you primarily work out inside, a fitness tracker may be more appropriate. If, however, you frequently go jogging, hiking, or camping, or you are a dedicated athlete, a GPS watch may provide you with greater accuracy in tracking the distances that you travel.

Battery life

When your watch is in GPS mode, it will use more energy from the battery. When you are shopping for a GPS watch, you will likely see that the watches have two different ratings for battery life, including one for normal mode and one for GPS active mode. If you are someone who wants to use a GPS watch for day hikes, running or cycling, choosing a watch with a GPS active battery life of six to eight hours should be sufficient. If you want a GPS watch to engage in more extreme activities like mountaineering or skiing, you might want to choose a watch that has a longer active GPS battery life.

Altimeter

Some GPS watches have built-in barometric altimeters, which measure changes in the barometric pressure to determine how high you climb. If you want to use your GPS watch to tell you how high you climb when mountain climbing or cycling, you might want to look for a watch that contains an altimeter.

Water resistance

Most GPS watches will be resistant to splashes of water, but some have much greater water resistance. If you are a triathlete, for example, you will want to choose a watch that can be submerged for long distances while you swim. Some GPS watches are designed specifically for triathletes and are able to track your metrics while you are swimming. Others are able to withstand being submerged at depths of up to 330 feet.

Heart rate monitors

Some less expensive models of GPS watches do not come with built-in heart rate monitors. Costlier watches may include heart rate monitors, however. If you want to see your heart rate during your activities, choosing a watch that comes with an optical heart rate monitor can be a good choice. This can provide you with added convenience while you work out.

Wireless syncing

Some lower-end models of GPS watches do not have built-in wireless syncing. To transfer the data from your watch to your computer, you will have to manually connect it. Other models are Bluetooth enabled, allowing the data from your GPS watch to be transferred wirelessly. However, not all of the higher-priced models have data syncing capabilities, so you will want to look for a model that does if wireless syncing is important to you.

Price and use considerations

Prices for GPS watches range from more affordable choices to expensive high-end watches. The watch that you ultimately might choose may depend on your intended uses. For example, if you simply want a basic GPS watch to track data during your daily morning run, a less expensive version may be perfectly fine for your purposes. If you are an elite athlete that wants more comprehensive data and tracking, you might find that a high-end watch is a better choice.

People who engage in multiple types of sports may be better off choosing multisport GPS watches. These can allow you to switch between different sports modes to track data and information that is relevant to each individual sport. Most multisport GPS watches also show your navigation as well as how you can return to where you started in case that you get lost.

Looks

In addition to the features that a GPS watch includes, some people also prefer watches that are more attractive. This particular consideration is highly dependent on your personal tastes. Some people prefer watches that are available in a range of bright colors while others might prefer watches that are sleek and attractive that look good when they are not being used in GPS active mode. Other people are not particular when it comes to how their GPS watches look but are rather more concerned with how well they function.

GPS watches may be a superior choice to Fitness Trackers for people who engage in all types of outdoor activities. They are good choices for runners, cyclists, triathletes, and hikers. If you are someone who likes to go off-road jogging or wilderness camping, these watches may help you in finding your way back so that you do not get lost. If you are thinking about purchasing a GPS watch, it is a good idea for you to think about what you will use it for so that you can choose a watch that best meets your particular needs.
