Hand Paddle Buying Guide

Swimming laps in the pool is one of the most comfortable ways to engage in exercise for people of all ages and fitness levels. The water provides a low impact environment with natural resistance for an effective workout. One way to enhance your activity in the water is with hand paddles. What are hand paddles and why should you use them? Which style of hand paddle is best for your fitness level and needs? Read below for tips on selecting the optimal set of hand paddles for your aquatic activities.

What are hand paddles?

Hand paddles help to train a swimmer's stroke in order to improve form and speed. They particularly target the "catch", where the hand changes position to begin to pull the water back and propel the swimmer forward. The paddles, typically plastic plates in the general shape of a mitt or a fin, are secured on the fingers of the swimmer by elastic cords or pockets that hold them snugly in place. Some models have holes throughout the hand paddles as well for decreased resistance.

Why should you use hand paddles for swimming?

The paddles accentuate the feel of the swimmer's stroke through the whole arm instead of just the hand, and therefore make errors in form more noticeable. If you are interested in improving the speed and/or efficacy of your strokes in the pool, hand paddles can also assist you in doing so. Hand paddles are designed to help you to build power in your upper body. The resistance of the paddles increases your strength and improve your catch and the underwater pull of your stroke, making your strokes faster and more commanding.

Who benefits most from hand paddles?

While hand paddles can be used by athletes at any skill level, they are best utilized by swimmers who already have a good baseline technical execution of a stroke. If the swimmer has poor positioning of the hand or arm prior to introducing the hand paddle, the additional resistance of the apparatus is more likely to cause injury. The most common technical issues that should be corrected prior to utilizing the hand paddles are dropped elbows, crossing the center line, and bilateral imbalance of entry.

Choosing the Best Hand Paddles for You Hand paddles come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and materials. In order to determine which hand paddles will best meet your swimming needs, consider the following specifications.

  • Size
The hand paddles that you choose should be about 10 percent larger than your hands, especially if you are new to using them. Paddles that are larger than this will create too much resistance and can potentially injure the shoulder. As you become more proficient with the paddles and increase your strength, you can transition into larger hand paddles. Be sure to consult any sizing charts for the hand paddles you choose, and try them on your hand prior to purchasing if necessary. It is also important to note that for some brands, the color of the hand paddles is correlated with the size. For example, yellow paddles may all be size large, while blue paddles are all medium. If the paddle you are purchasing comes in different hues, inquire as to whether they are color coded by size.

  • Fit

Hand paddles can be secured to the fingers in different ways. Most hand paddles use elastic bands that wrap around several of the fingers to hold them in place. Other paddles have a pocket or hole in which to place one or more of the fingers for a more secure fit. Typically, paddles There are also hand paddles that have several strap holes in order to make the bands adjustable and more secure.

  • Shape and Style

There is a variety of shapes and hole designs available for hand paddles. Paddles are flat or ergonomic, with a mitt-like shape and a rounded tip above the fingers. These are meant to mimic the shape of the hand in order to minimize disruption to the swimmer's technique and to work on the overall stroke, including the catch and the pull. Other hand paddles are designed for specific functions. Some are shaped more like fins, with a pointed tip. These hand paddles are intended to work specifically on freestyle strokes. Smaller paddles designed to be worn just under the fingertips are constructed to specifically improve the feel of your catch.

  • Design

Hand paddles can be flat or contoured. While the contoured paddles can feel more natural against the shape of the hand, flat paddles are not necessarily inferior. It is ultimately personal preference and what feels most comfortable for you. Hand paddles may also have varying numbers of holes to allow water to pass through and decrease resistance. The holes can also allow you to feel the water on your palm and make the use of the paddle feel more natural. The fewer holes that are on the hand paddles, the harder they will be to pull through the water. If you are just beginning to use hand paddles, or need to build up your arm and shoulder strength, you should choose a set of paddles with more holes in order to make pulling them through the water less strenuous to reduce the risk of injury.

  • Materials

The traditional material that hand paddles are constructed out of is plastic. The majority of paddles on the market will be plastic, with variations in size, style and design, as mentioned above. Some paddles are partially or completely constructed of rubber or silicone, which can be safer when sharing the lane or swimming space with other swimmers.

  • Price

Most of the paddles are similarly priced, and the range of pricing on popular hand paddles is small. Price variations are not correlated with the design or materials of the paddles; contoured or flat, all plastic or partially rubber all cost about the same. Additionally, the quality of the product is also not necessarily aligned with its cost. Reading reviews on the life of the straps or the feel of the paddle against your hand will better assist you than price in determining the right hand paddles for you.

What else should I consider about using hand paddles? Once you have chosen the hand paddles that you intend to purchase, it is important to keep the following information in mind to maximize their efficacy.

  • Frequency of Use
While paddles are great for improving your form, they should only be used for 25 percent or less of your workout. In addition to elevating the risk of injury, more frequent use of the hand paddles can increase your dependence on the paddles to execute your stroke.

  • Buying Additional Paddles

As mentioned above, the type of hand paddles that you purchase will depend on your strength and the areas of your stroke in which you want to improve. As you continue to swim and progress and these change or evolve, you may end up needing or wanting additional sets of hand paddles.

  • Pull Buoy

In order to further enhance the efficacy of the swim paddles, many swimmers will use a pull buoy. This contoured piece of foam rests between the thighs and keeps the legs and hips afloat so that the focus and energy can be given fully to the arm stroke. This also increases the power and strength of the upper body, since it will be doing all of the work in pulling your body through the water.

  • Injury or Discomfort

If you sustain injury or experience significant discomfort, the hand paddles you selected may not be the right fit for you. Consider a smaller paddle, one with a different style or less resistance, and/or a different strap system for securing the paddles to your hand.

Whether you are a competitive swimmer looking to increase your power and speed, or a novice interested in improving your form and technique, hand paddles can help you make the progress you desire.
