Handheld CB Radio Buying Guide

Handheld CB Radio Image
Picture: PRO520XL Pro Series from Uniden

There is no more iconic image than a trucker barreling down the road, with a CB radio to his ear. Since 1948, the CB has achieved legendary status in American culture.

Today, technology has brought the 1958 " Citizens Band." into the 21st century. CB's have also become a victim of their 1970'popularity. Millions of users on limited channels created gridlock; the communication method became antiquated.

Modern CB Radios employ 40 channels, with 9 being the emergency channel. CB slang is distinctive with the use of 10 and Q codes. Everyone should know what 10-4 means. (message received) There are entire websites dedicated to the slang.

FCC mandates no more than 4 watts for the AM band and 12 watts to the SSB (SideBand) modes. CBs are used for short distance communication only. In AM mode, a user can expect a distance range of .75 to 1 mile per watt. Improve the antenna, and your transmission range will get a lot better.

  • AM mode is the most common and natural band to use. Always match the modulation to the person on the other end; everyone uses the AM band, including emergency channels.
  • SSB or single-sideband operation increased power to 12 watts. CB etiquette says, AM modulation operates on the lower channels and SSB the upper channels. SSB only functions if the other user has SSB capability

When you start shopping for that perfect handheld, remember the FCC only allows 40 channels. Some manufacturers will advertise 120 channels, because of the AM, LSB and USB modes.

It is essential to know what features you need from a handheld. Prioritize user experience, weather forecast, emergency channels. Space on the device will be limited.

Another aspect of your research needs to include the antenna. Consider the antenna already on the device 1) Make sure it accomplishes what you need. 2) Are going to use the equipment inside and outside a vehicle or motorcycle? How easy will it be to connect and disconnect?

Here are some features to consider.

  • Bluetooth: Technology is getting smaller, this feature is showing up everywhere.
  • Channel scan: Full featured models will allow the user to pre-select channels to scan. Otherwise, push a button, all 40 are scanned.
  • Dynamic/Mic Gain: Adjust the microphone on whether you or someone on the other end is talking loud or soft. Essential feature on a handheld.
  • Instant Emergency Channels: In 1969 channel nine was designated for emergency transmission. Dedicated buttons provide instant access. This feature is standard on any CB.
  • Lights: Make sure the handheld has a night watch or starlight feature. This makes it easier for the face of the unit to be seen at night. Newer models will have on/off, high/low and dimmer switches.
  • RF Gain: Any decent handheld will have this function. Allows the user to open/close the receiver to quiet, without utilizing squelch control. Enables the radio to achieve a greater receive distance.
  • Roger Beep: Informs the user on the other end, you are done speaking.
  • Squelch: Standard function on all radios. The CB tunes out static and weak signals. Squelch reduces, receive distance.
  • Weather: Provides the ability to pick up NOAA frequencies. Some handhelds offer emergency alert features. Required feature for marine and motorcycle use.

Newer technologies have relegated the CB radio to specialized applications. Industries like trucking and marine find the CB radio indispensable. The security of knowing a CB radio is in your dashboard or tucked away in your home will have you sleeping better.

Many people would be unprepared if a natural disaster struck tomorrow. Or you were caught in a remote area, where there might not be cell phone reception. The CB radio will give you quicker disaster information than a cellphone or the internet.

If you are purchasing a handheld CB radio for the first time, here are some tips that will help.

  • People believe more money, the farther the transmission signal. The FCC regulates all CBs to 4 watts, approximately 1 mile of range per watt. The most significant difference in models will be the features not transmission range.
  • The antenna on a handheld CB matters. Spend sufficient research time to find a handheld with options to upgrade the antenna. If you want better reception from your handheld, you will need a better antenna.
  • Buy a CB on price alone, and you get what you pay for. If your gear is exposed to the elements, cheap CB equipment will always disappoint.

Pickups, SUVs, RVs, and motorcycles use the handheld CB almost exclusively. Commercial truckers utilize primarily mounted CBs, with large whip antennas. Truckers use a handhelds CB outside their rig when loading cargo, fixing their rig, etc.

Are you shopping for a handheld CB for a specific use? Make sure you are buying the right CB with the features you must have. There will always be low and high-end radios for each category. Consider the following handhelds. Each of these radios would be considered a mid-range priced CB.

  • Cars/Trucks/RV/SUV: A handheld for use inside a vehicle, the primary features to look for is the range, weather, and emergency channels. When you are considering an accessory, look for a headset and maybe a speaker.

*Cobra Handheld with Weather, HH50WXST: Cobra is one of the most popular CB manufacturers in the world. In real-world situations, users will get excellent reception in the 2 to 4-mile range. Battery Operated. SoundTracker gives the user a better transmission and reception signal.

  • Marine/All Terrain: Handheld Radios for boat use requires specific features to be useful. These radios need to have a rugged design. It is always a smart buying decision if you go with a name brand product. Marine conditions can quickly turn hazardous, all the emergency channels pre-programmed is a necessity.

*Uniden MH 575 Handheld submersible. This rugged radio is submersible and floats, a necessity for marine applications. The receiver is factory programmed with all US, Canadian and international channels. The radio supports all emergency alert systems. The Uniden features bright panels and a backlit keyboard. Uniden has been creating two-way radios for over fifty years.

*Cobra HH450 All-terrain radio. Price would be considered in the high range. Camo-covered floating radio has all the features. Pre-programmed channels and a long-lasting battery. The Cobra is a professional quality radio that will last a lifetime and go anywhere.

  • Motorcycles: Handheld two-way radios, used exclusively by riders, need to be lightweight and rugged. Touring and club organizers love the convenience of speaking with one another out on the road. Bikers also like the safety features if an emergency comes up.

*Midland 75822 Ultra Compact. This efficient sized radio only weighs 1.7 lbs. Weather channels and CB 9 and 19 are instantly accessible. Riders can purchase a helmet ready headset, compatible with the radio. The power antenna connection module is unique to the Midland. The handset can be set-up with all types of configurations. Power adapters, magnet mount antennas, and jacks for headphones or earpieces make this a versatile handheld.

Accessories are an essential part of any handheld CB radio purchase. Your research should extend to add-ons, personalize and give the handheld added functionality.

  • Antenna quick disconnect: Push and twist, and your antenna is off.
  • Cigarette adapter: Make sure you have a suitable power source.
  • Astatic 302-V54 noise canceling speaker: Small footprint speaker offers exceptional sound quality.
  • HYS TC-300N Power Amplifier. A must-have accessory counteracts weak and frail signals.
  • Plantronics MX203 Mobile Headset. Another must-have accessory, headsets offer great convenience.
  • Motorola DTR Swivel Belt Holster. Adds comfort and convenience to any handheld.

The modern handheld CB is a wonderful device that may save your life one day. Specialized industries are finding success with this updated technology. Cellphones and computer tablets cannot compete with a handheld CB in emergency situations. Affordable prices and convenience should make this device a fixture around the home. Make sure you have a list of the absolute must-have features for your application.
