Heating Pad Buying Guide

Are there times in your life when you’re feeling cold, and you just can’t seem to get warm, no matter how hard you try? Perhaps you have adjusted the heat, put on your wool socks and grabbed the afghan, but nothing seems to work. If that is a regular event in your life, you may want to think about trying a heating pad. Perhaps you work in a cold office environment where you have no control over the thermostat. A heating pad just might be your ticket to comfort. Whatever the situation, a heating pad is one of the best ways to provide the extra warmth you need. Heating pads will do more than just keep you warm, though. They can soothe tired, sore muscles as well as provide relief from chronic pain. Heating pads also are useful for relaxation. In fact, a heating pad has so many beneficial uses that it can improve your overall quality of life.

What Are the Benefits of Heating Pads?

There are many benefits that a heating pad can provide in addition to keeping you warm and comfortable. One of those benefits comes in the form of pain relief, which is sometimes referred to as therapeutic heating. Many chronic pain sufferers use a heating pad as an essential step in their pain-management program. The pain they are experiencing may only be a temporary setback, or it could be a form of long-term chronic pain. Others use a heating pad for relaxation purposes. At the end of a long day, it is not unusual for people to feel tired and exhausted. Their muscles are tight and full of tension. Applying heat to the muscle area can relieve that tension and provide a feeling of relaxation.

As far as pain management goes, there are many types of pain that a heating pad can help relieve. Here are just a few of them:

• General muscle pain and soreness • Back pain • Shoulder pain • Neck pain • Leg pain • Cramps and spasms • Stiff and painful joints

Heat therapy is an inexpensive form of pain management and much less intrusive than surgery. It also is quicker than going to the doctor to get a prescription pain reliever. However, there are certain types of pain that should not be treated with heat. These include inflammation, infections, flesh wounds and burns.

What Type of Heat Does a Heating Pad Generate?

Depending on the design, a heating pad may produce dry or moist heat. Most pads give off dry heat, meaning that they do not use water or any other type of liquid—the pad simply heats up. However, some pads have the ability to give off a moist heat. For example, one type of pad contains a sponge that can be dampened and inserted into the pad so that when the pad heats, a moist heat is produced. While most heating pads only produce a dry heat, there are certain benefits to a moist heat, including the following:

• Moist heat is not as likely to dry the skin • Moist heat may penetrate deeper to give deep-tissue relief • Moist heat may feel better on the skin

What Type of Heating Pads Are Available?

There are four common types of heating pads commercially available: electric, microwaveable, chemical and infrared. Here is a brief discussion of each:

(1) Electric

Electric heating pads have been the standard for a number of years. They are generally considered to be more convenient to use than other types. Because of this, they tend to be the type of pad chosen most often by people who use them on a regular basis, such as chronic pain sufferers. Most electric heating pads have a built-in control to adjust the temperature. The main disadvantage to an electric heating pad is that it has to be plugged into an electrical outlet unless it is of a rechargeable type.

(2) Microwaveable

As the name indicates, a microwaveable heating pad is warmed in a microwave oven. Microwaveable heating pads are filled with a special type of material that becomes hot when exposed to microwave radiation. This type of pad can become very hot and retain its heat for a long time period. One advantage of microwaveable heating pads is that they tend to be quite affordable. Although this type of pad may not be as convenient as an electric pad, it might be the best choice for occasional pain relief or even for relaxation.

(3) Chemical

Chemical heating pads work by taking advantage of a chemical reaction that occurs when the pad is shaken, exposed to air or otherwise disturbed. These pads take several minutes to heat up. Therefore, they are not ideal for granting immediate pain relief. Compared to other types of pads, chemical heating pads can be on the expensive side, especially if you use them on a regular basis. Also, it is not possible to adjust the temperature as easily as you can with an electric pad. Chemical heating pads, though, have a distinct advantage that electric and microwaveable pads do not have: they do not require electricity, meaning that you can take advantage of them anywhere, even at an outdoor event.

(4) Infrared

Infrared energy is an invisible type of electromagnetic radiation that can provide heat in much the same way as the sun does. Some infrared heating pads take advantage of this scientific principle by generating heat through the use of carbon fibers. Infrared heat is very safe and will not burn or scald. In addition to homes, these types of pads are used in hospitals, nursing homes, neo-natal units and other medical facilities.

What Features Are Available in Heating Pads?

Heating pads come with a variety of available features, including temperature controls, automatic shut-off and various types of pads and pad covers. Here is a list of some of those features:

(1) Temperature Controls

Most electric heating pads have controls that will let you set the temperature at low, medium or high. Some are continually adjustable. Microwaveable and chemical pads do not typically have this feature.

(2) Automatic Shut-0ff

Many pads will turn themselves off after a designated time period. This is primarily a safety feature. Suppose, for instance, that a person falls to sleep while using a heating pad. This could be a dangerous situation if the pad stays on. This feature could prove frustrating to some users. However, when the pad turns itself off, you just have to turn it back on again.

(3) Specific Pad Designs

All pads have some type of cover over them. The primary purpose of a cover is to prevent scalding. However, the right type of pad can provide the heat you need and feel good against your skin at the same time. Many covers are made of flannel or fleece. Others are microfiber. Some pads are designed to fit a specific part of your body, such as your neck or knee. Some pads are more flexible than others and will fit the contour of your body better. This could be important if you need to apply heat to a specific area or wrap the pad around a body part.

(4) Cord Length

The cord length of an electric pad can be important for two reasons. First, you don't want a cord so long that it gets tangled easily and becomes a nuisance. On the other hand, you don't want a cord so short that you can't sit or lie where you want. Of course, if you have a chemical or microwaveable heating pad, you don't have a cord at all.

(5) Rechargeable Pads

One of the newer developments in heating pads is a rechargeable pad. This type of pads uses rechargeable batteries in much the same way as your smart phone. You plug it into the wall outlet to charge it, but it then can be used in a cordless fashion.

Summary

There are many types of heating pads on the market. Before you make a purchase, though, you owe it to yourself to conduct some additional research in order to find the pad that will work best for you.
