Hitch Bike Rack Buying Guide

Biking is a great way to get out and enjoy the outdoors while getting a workout for your legs and cardio. Of course, bikes can be used to get around town, run errands, and even commute to work. However, sometimes a little bit of driving is required to get your bike where you want to ride, making a bike rack a necessity.

There are a number of different styles of bike racks available, including roof mounted and trunk mounted, but hitch-style bike racks provide a great option for many riders as they come in a variety of sizes and styles, fit universally into a set hitch size, are easy to attach and detach, work with both mountain and road bikes, and more.

Types of Hitch Bike Racks Available

Hitch style racks are all designed to fit into either a 1.25-inch or a two-inch hitch attachment on a vehicle. Two-inch hitches are often found on trucks and larger SUVs, while 1.25-inch models are often used on smaller cars and SUVs. There are also adapters that allow cars with one of these two hitch sizes to accommodate the other size as well.

Tray Style Hitch Rack

Tray style racks, also known as platform racks, work by providing a bar or tray for the wheels to rest in and clamping down on either the frame or the front wheel of the bike. These racks are great for all types of bikes since they can clamp down on nearly any model. This includes heavy bikes, which work well with tray racks since they are easy to load at a low height.

Racks that clamp to the front wheel are generally more versatile and are better for keeping bikes in good condition compared to those that clamp to the frame because the frame of the bike remains untouched. These models can also be used on a number of bikes no matter what frame design is used. An adjustable bar swings up over the front wheel to clamp it down to the frame, preventing it from swinging and shifting positions. These racks work well for full-suspension bikes or those with odd frame shapes. They are also highly stable and prevent any unnecessary damage to the bike frame.

Arm Support Hitch Rack

The second main style of hitch rack is an arm support rack, also known as a hanging rack. These models use a metal arm that reaches upwards from the hitch attachment and supports the bikes by clamping onto their frames. The loading height on this type of frame is still relatively low, but it is slightly higher when compared to platform racks.

Many of these racks have a way to attach the middle of the bike frame to the rack to prevent the bikes from swinging. However, for full-suspension mountain bikes or bicycles that utilize an irregular frame shape, this style of frame may not work effectively to keep your bike secured.

Wheel Only Hanging Rack

Wheel clamping hanging racks come in two styles that use an arm support design. These arm support racks generally utilize a V shape coming vertically from the hitch attachment. On the ends of each of the bars, an attaching mechanism is used to keep the wheels in place and support the bike. Straps are also incorporated to prevent the bikes from rocking back and forth.

Other racks utilize a vertical storage design, allowing you to carry more bikes on your rack since bikes are able to be attached to both the left and right sides of the rack. However, this rack design often adds additional height to your vehicle as the bikes often stick up, so you must take height restrictions into account.

Advantages of Hitch Bike Racks Over Other Styles

There are many different types of bike rack styles that are produced, but the three main types are roof mount, trunk mount, and hitch style. Each of these styles has certain advantages, but the hitch rack provides a number of benefits over both of these other styles.

Installing a hitch on your car, which is required to install a hitch rack, is also beneficial as it can be used for many other tasks, including towing and installing other types of racks. In addition, this leaves the roof rack open to accommodate other attachments, such as ski racks, cargo boxes, and more.

Hitch Mount versus Roof Mount

One of the biggest advantages of hitch bicycle racks is the height at which you load and unload your bike. Since the racks themselves fit into the hitch on your car, the bikes are always around chest level, making them much easier to access when compared to a roof-mounted rack. This is especially helpful when you are riding heavier, full-suspension bikes.

Another advantage hitch racks have over roof racks is that you are still able to fit under garage doors, take the vehicle through the drive through, and not have to worry about any other clearance issues. In addition, since the bikes are not placed on the roof, your car's gas mileage and aerodynamics are often much improved.

Hitch Mount versus Trunk Mount

Trunk-mounted bike racks utilize straps that attach to the trunk of the car, and one of the biggest problems with these racks is the potential damage to the car. For many trunk racks, the straps themselves can cause damage as the metal clips can scratch and dent the vehicle. If the straps don't cause damage, the bikes can with spinning tires, pedals and handlebars hitting the car, and more. Trunk racks also must be attached correctly and securely to prevent the straps or bikes from detaching while on the road.

Hitch racks do not have these same issues as the racks are placed off the back of the vehicle and do not use straps to secure them. The bikes can also be better held in place to prevent them from swinging and damaging the car or other bikes on the rack.

Things to Consider When Purchasing a Bike Rack

Once you decide on the type of hitch rack that best fits your bicycle, vehicle, and style preferences, there are also a few other considerations that you should keep in mind when selecting a rack.

Swinging or Hinging Models:

Some bike racks utilize a swinging or hinging design. These products are designed to allow you to be able to access and open your trunk even when the rack is attached to the hitch. These products are often used on two-inch hitches due to their extra weight and stability requirements, but they can be very helpful if you keep your rack attached often or require access to the trunk.

Security:

Racks can differ significantly in the locking mechanisms used. It is important to ensure that the rack itself can be locked to your vehicle's hitch with a locking hitch pin. It's also good to note how the bikes can be locked or secured to the rack to ensure that they are safe from thieves if they are left unattended. Some racks include retractable locks, some come with chains or cables, and others are equipped with other locking mechanisms.

Composition Material:

Hitch racks can be built out of a number of different materials, the most common of which are steel and aluminum. Steel racks are the most durable option, but they are often quite heavy. These racks are best if you are carrying heavier bicycles or plan to use your rack often or keep it attached constantly. On the other hand, aluminum frames are more lightweight, often slightly cheaper, and are best for individuals who take their rack on and off often.

Storage:

If you don't plan on having your bike rack permanently attached to your vehicle, the way that it breaks down to be stored is important. Some racks do not fold at all and can take up a large amount of space for storage. However, some racks have the ability to be folded or broken down to limit the space they take up when not in use.
