Home Brew Kit Buying Guide

Home brewing is becoming a popular hobby for many men and women. Some people turn the hobby into a business if they enjoy the process enough to open their own pub. Others simply enjoy drinking their own beer at home or serving it to guests. If you are interested in becoming a home brewer and are new to the process, these tips will help you find a good brewing kit.

Which Home Brewing Kit Is Right For Me?

The right brewing kit should meet your goals. You may want a cheap and quick system, an average brewer or a high-end kit. Think about how much time and money it takes to brew your desired volume of beer. As a rule, experts usually advise people to start with something cheap and move to a high-end product if they like the hobby. Nothing is more disappointing than spending a lot of money on a high-end kit and rarely using it.

Bag Home Brewing System

With many sets priced under $100, bag-based kits are the cheapest products for home brewing. Most seasoned home brewing enthusiasts do not recommend them for long-term use. However, they are great for first-time brewers. These are the main benefits:

  • Easy cleanup
  • Simplified process
  • Minimal space requirement

You must still be careful with the mash rest temperature and your brewing time. However, a bag system eliminates the need for sparging, lautering and vorlaufing while it produces the same results.

Standard Home Brewing Kit

If you want to spend an average amount for a starter set that has the essentials but is not a bag-based system, look for a kit that is the right size in terms of brewing volume. Most brewing kits yield about five gallons of beer. However, you can choose smaller or larger ones. You can find basic quality kits for a variety of prices between $150 and $750.

High-end Home Brewing System

High-end kits are usually priced between $1,000 and $7,000. These kits typically come with high-quality stainless steel stands and kettles, and they have digital components. You will need plenty of space to accommodate them. Also, many have propane or natural gas components that require installation help from a professional. If you want to make beer often in larger batches or want to sell your beer, a high-end home brewing system is a smart choice. However, an expensive kit does not necessarily make better beer. Its purpose is to make the steps of the brewing process physically easier on you.

Understanding Home Brewing Kit Components

When you are ready to buy a kit, learn about the components and their functions. Many people make the mistake of just buying a kit that is recommended by someone online without understanding what is in it. If you are new to brewing and want to buy a standard system rather than a bag kit, these are some important components to consider.

Bucket Versus Carboy For Fermentation

While some kits come with buckets, others come with carboys. Some people prefer to buy a specific type of carboy separately. One of the main issues with a carboy is that you may lose some beer and foam during the brewing process because of its shape. To accommodate your beer and the gasses during the brewing process, plan on using a carboy that is the same size as your batch if you choose this option. Some home brewers prefer buckets for easier maintenance and cleanup.

Plastic Versus Glass Fermentation Vessels

This is another important choice to make that depends on your personal preferences. Many new brewers choose glass vessels because they are less prone to infection. Glass lets in less oxygen than plastic, and more oxygen heightens your contamination risk. However, plastic vessels are safe to use if you follow the correct steps. Many experienced brewers use them because they are considerably lighter than glass vessels. Also, they are not as easy to break as glass products. Once you become familiar with the brewing process, you may prefer to use both. Some brewers use a plastic bucket for their primary and a glass carboy for their secondary.

Siphon Hose

A siphon is an important part of the brewing process. When you pour your beer into one or more containers, you must filter out the sediment. A siphon hose helps you accomplish that. However, not all kits come with one. If you buy a kit that does not have a siphon, purchase one separately.

Hydrometer

If the kit has a hydrometer, that is a huge plus. When your beer is heavier, the hydrometer will float higher. It shows you how well the sugar dissolves in your brew. In a lighter liquid with a higher alcohol content, the hydrometer will float lower. This tool is especially important if you are concerned about a precise alcohol content in your beer. With a hydrometer, you can easily calculate the alcohol content by measuring the starting and ending amounts of sugar in your beer.

Bottle Filler

This may not be a vital piece of equipment for you if you use a bucket with a spigot and a hose. Some home brewers prefer the simplicity of a hose. However, many brewers like a bottle filler because it yields a more uniform liquid level. It reduces splashing and oxidation as well. In comparison with a spigot, you will notice less manual work. Fortunately, a bottle filler is inexpensive, and you can buy one separately if your kit does not include it.

Airlock Stopper

If you are concerned about contamination, look for a kit with an airlock stopper. It goes on your fermentation container during the brewing process. When you leave the lid and the airlock on, the primary fermentation starts slower. There is also a lower risk of contaminants entering your brew. However, some people leave it off if they want to speed up the fermentation process. Most seasoned brewers recommend that new enthusiasts start with an airlock until they are comfortable with the brewing process.

Useful Accessories

Some kits give you every necessity and a few extra accessories. If you find a kit that includes some bottles and caps, you may save money on containers. Although you can use a different type of container as a test jar, some kits also include one. A few kits include spoons and funnels as well, and you are sure to use a funnel at some point. Lab thermometers and liquid crystal thermometers are included in some kits. It is up to you to decide on your preferred type of thermometer. However, there is not a major difference between them when it comes to measuring temperatures. Some kits include carbonation drops, which are useful if you want to make carbonated beer or cider. Look for home brewing product sets that include recipe kits since some can be pricey to purchase separately. You may want to buy different types of brewing recipe kits as you continue your tasting experiments.

The most important thing to remember is that the brewing kit is not the key to high-quality beer. A good kit is simply a valuable aid. To make delicious beer consistently, you must master the steps in the brewing process. Be patient with yourself when you start since it takes time and practice to get them right and develop a routine. You may have to discard a few batches, and it may take a little while before your beer tastes right to you.
