Isolation Headphone Buying Guide

Noise isolating headphones work by removing or dampening outside sounds of a certain decibel (dB) level, allowing you to listen to only the music are you are listening to. Not only can you better enjoy your music with these type of headphones, you will be able to listen to it at a lower volume, which in the long run can help you prevent hearing loss.

Noise isolating headphones range from around 25 dB of reduction to more than 40 dB. But they will not completely eliminate or cancel outside sounds. A normal conversation is usually about 60 dB, so you would still likely hear it while using these headphones. It would just be about half as loud, assuming you were using 30 db headphones, which is a common market attribute.

Important Features To Look For in a pair of Noise Isolating Headphones

There are many different features that you will want to consider when deciding which pair of noise isolating headphones you should purchase. These include the following:

The Type of Headphone

There are many types of noise isolating headphones. You can buy one that fits snugly over your ears or a pair that fits right on yours ears. You can also choose a more portable type of headphone. These include ear buds, in-ear headphones and around-the-ears headphones. These types of headphones can be either wireless or have a cable that you must plug in.

Which type of headphone you chose often depends on comfort. For example, some people prefer ear buds, while others find them uncomfortable. Also, how you use the headphones may determine what type you should buy. If you plan to use them with your smartphone or tablet, you probably will want ear buds or either an in-ear or around-the-ear device, as they are more portable. Keep in mind that a recent trend in smartphones — especially at the high end — is the elimination of the headphone jack. Without one, you will need a wireless pair of headphones.

Decibel Level

You are buying noise isolating headphones to reduce outside noise, so how much noise they reduce should be a key factor in deciding which one to buy. Some headphones reduce more than 40 dB of sound, such as the Etymotic Research HF5 ear buds. But there is not a huge difference between this and a set of Beyerdynamic DT 770 M 80 headphones, which reduces noise by up to 35 dB, and you may find that the latter pair is more comfortable.

Impedance

Impedance, which is measured in ohms, specifies how much electricity a device consumes. But the higher amount of impedance, the higher the volume the headphones can achieve. Unfortunately, mobile devices usually cannot handle high impedance headphones. If you are looking to pair noise isolating headphones with a smartphone or tablet, look for an impedance value of around 32 ohms or lower. Otherwise, get one with an impedance of 70 ohms or higher.

Sound Quality

Unfortunately, sound quality cannot be quantified easilty. There is no number or statistic that really measures it, especially as it is so subjective. While you can read online reviews, the best way to judge sound quality is listen to the devices in person. Even if you plan on buying the headphones online, you can still go to your local electronics store and listen to them. Try to listen to them with your favorite type of music and at various volume levels, and make sure you pay attention to how the bass sounds.

Comfort and Durability

While you are the store, also check the comfort and the construction quality of the headphones. Some headphones look comfortable, but if you have them on your ears for more than a few minutes, they start to aggravate your ears. Also, if they look like they could fall apart within a few months, it does not matter what features they have or how cheap they are.

Like with sound quality, many online reviews will describe the comfort and durability of a particular set of headphones.

Portability

If you plan on using the headphones only at home, then portability is not an issue. But if it is an issue, look for headphones that are lightweight and that you can easily carry with you. Obviously, ear buds are a good choice if portability is important, but some over-the-ear and on-the-ear headphones are also portable, especially if you can fold or collapse them.

Replaceable Earpads

Even the best earpads can break or tear or become worn. This is why detachable earpads are good feature to look for in a headphone. This way you simply replace the earpad instead of having to buy a completely new pair of headphones.

Battery Life

If you will be using your noise isolating headphones on the go, you will want a pair with a long battery life. ISOtunes PRO, for example, has a 10-hour battery life.

Waterproofing

If you are going to use the headphones in a gym or while you jog, you will probably want headphones that are waterproof. This is so that they will be impervious to both sweat and the elements.

Price

Fortunately, you do not have to spend a fortune to buy a pair of high quality noise isolating headphones. You can find a good pair for under $100, and you can even buy a high-end pair for a few hundred dollars.

How to Select a Noise Isolating Headphone

Because there are so many noise isolating headphones available, it can be difficult to chose. First, decide what are the 3 or 4 most important features you want, plus the price you want to pay. This should reduce your options down to a handful, and then you can cull this list further by trying each possibility in a store.
