Keg Taps Buying Guide

There are thousands of brands of beer including craft beers from microbreweries, imports and domestic brands. Unfortunately, the keg system is not standardized, so you can't choose a one-size-fits-all keg-tapping system. People buy kegs for many purposes--commercial sales, personal use in the home, office bars, parties, picnics, fraternity rushing, festivals and special events. It's important to assess your needs and brand preferences to choose the right keg tap. The first step is to determine the type of system that you want to use. Draft beer comes in different-sized kegs for domestic U.S. beer and imports. The tap system connects the pressurized keg contents to the faucet and a source of pressurized air to make the beer flow. Party pumps include the pump and tap in one assembly. You can choose from the following keg systems:

  • Commercial Kegs These usually come in quarter-barrel and half-barrel sizes and are stored in refrigerated cabinets that usually have built-in taps.
  • Kegerators Kegerators are special refrigerators made specifically for kegs. These make some of the best keg options for home use. You can find kits that have everything you need, but you still have to make sure that the tap system will work with your keg brand.
  • Picnic Pump Kegs Some pump systems are designed for a single use while others stand up to multiple uses. Choose carefully based on your needs. Pump systems will tap the keg and dispense beer, but you still need to match the pump with the keg’s valve system.
  • Kegs Using Carbon Dioxide These are the gold standard for people who don't want to bother with hand pumps, but buying or renting CO2 or nitrogen tanks adds extra expenses. However, CO2 pressure and the right refrigeration ensure that the beer in your keg stays fresh longer. The beer can stay bright and crisp for a month or longer.

Parts of Different Types of Keg Systems

Each beer manufacturer uses a unique keg-tapping system using a specialized valve shape for beer pumps and coupler systems. There are so many brands that it's impossible to list all of them, but you can check with your distributor to find the right system. Regardless of brand, there some important distinctions that you need to understand before buying a keg-tapping system.

Regulators are an important accessory for kegs using nitrogen or carbon dioxide. Tanks might have both a primary and secondary pressure regulator. The coupler connects to the tapping valve and the gas-dispenser line. The tower connects to the faucet, which is usually made of nonreactive metal so that beer doesn't develop an “off” taste. The handles are used to draw the beer, and commercial distributors often provide custom handles to bars to further promote their brands. Many of these parts are interchangeable, but the valves definitely vary with craft beers and imports. Most major American brewers use the D system. The standard tapping systems include:

  • D System Also called the American Sankey, this keg valve is used by most North American beers including Coors, Miller, Budweiser, Molson and Labatt.
  • S System The European system is used by imported beer brands such as Becks, Amstel Light and Heineken.
  • A System Used by many German breweries, the German Slider system is used by Paulaner, Spaten and Warsteiner.
  • M System This recent addition to tapping systems features a body like the German Slider's, but it has a unique probe configuration. The M system used by Aventinus, Einbecker and Schneider.
  • G System This coupler system is used by Boddington's, Bass, Anchor Steam and Caffrey's.
  • U System The U system is used in kegs of Guinness, Harp and others.
  • Twin Probe System This configuration is used by some craft breweries, but its use is somewhat limited.
  • Home Brew System This system uses ball lock fittings for brew tanks.
Some taps include a handle that pushes down to lock while others employ dual flanges that twist a quarter-turn to lock. Regardless of style, it's important to ensure that the taps aren't in the active position, or the beer can spray as soon as the tap is inserted into the valve.

Choosing the Best Keg Taps for Your Needs

There are different kinds of people who buy beer in kegs. These include craft beer aficionados, sports enthusiasts, home brewers, people planning parties and events, those who entertain lavishly in their homes and youthful beer lovers who want to get a little crazy.

Picnic and party pumps are the simplest taps because some are disposable after a single use. The pump assembly connects to the valve and dispenses the beer directly. You have to work the pump to maintain enough pressure to dispense the beer. If you’re just planning one party during the summer, this is an ideal choice. Party pumps, however, pump untreated air into the keg, so bacteria can cause a reaction that spoils the beer within 8 to 12 hours. If you entertain frequently or want your beer to last longer, a system using CO2 or nitrogen might prove to be a wiser investment. People who are picky about their draft beer can regulate the pressure for their preferred pouring speed and level of frothy head. Different beers taste better under different pressure. Some beer tastes better when pressurized with nitrogen; others shine best with carbon dioxide. Either gas connects to the coupler which also taps into the keg’s valve.

Shaken, Not Stirred

Some beer enthusiasts maintain that the simplest system works the best, but others prefer to pay premium prices to get better equipment and long-lasting kegs. Tap handles are also important to many beer admirers. Creative tap handles often inspire people to try a particular beer. Every aspect of the brew is important to some drinkers including head size, serving glass, temperature, tap handle, pressure level and other factors. Most beer enthusiasts recommend setting pressure for U.S. beers between 10 to 12 PSI. Stouts taste better when pressurized by nitrogen at 25 to 30 PSI.

Some people enjoy offering several varieties of beer on tap. Keep in mind that you’ll need a way to refrigerate multiple kegs and space to set up a CO2 system. If you’re transporting a party keg, you need to allow time for the beer to settle. You’ll also need to cool the keg in an ice bath.

Commercial Use

Your beer distributor can offer solid advice about what systems you need for commercial sales. Although some distributors recommend keeping certain beers at higher temperatures--up to 56-degrees Fahrenheit--a safer temperature is between 34 and 40 degrees. Some health departments insist on this temperature because beer is unpasteurized. The cooler temperature is essential to prevent contamination.

Tentative Recommendations Based on Certain Beer-Dispensing Goals

There are so many variable that recommending a particular brand of keg tap is difficult. However, there are some good choices depending on your planned use. Some of the better keg taps for different systems include:

  • EdgeStar Full Size Kegerator: This model is ideal for entry-level keg enthusiasts.
  • Kegco 4” Metal Keg Pump: Inexpensive and simple to use, this pump fits all D-system kegs.
  • Krome Dispense D-System Keg Tap from Taprite: Perfect for heavy-duty use, this system includes keg tap, coupler, stainless steel probe and a pressure release valve.
  • Taprite Bronco Multi-Tap Keg Pump: Ideal for a big party, the tap features four faucets that can dispense four beers simultaneously.

You should always research your choice, narrow your choices based on your needs and compare prices. What works fine for some beer lovers won’t do for others. Figure out what you want, and then find the right keg and tap to do the job.

Draft beer--according to beer enthusiasts--delivers a richer, deeper flavor than bottled or canned beer because it’s not pasteurized. People can taste the yeast and hops, which is a big benefit for beer lovers. Keg beer can make a great impression at your next party, but many people just want a steady supply for personal use. Regardless of how you consume the beer, it’s critical to research the tapping needs of the brand you want to buy in a keg. Getting the right keg tap can affect flavor, head and freshness, so do your beer diligence before ordering a keg.
