When your children are tiny, you want to do everything you can to protect them from getting hurt. Even sleeping can be dangerous for little ones if they aren't placed within the proper sleeping quarters. For instance, when they're babies, you place them inside a baby crib that is complete with rails to keep your baby from rolling and falling out of the crib, which could prove detrimental.

What About When Children Become Toddlers?

What do you do when your kids get older, though? Just because your child has transitioned from the baby stage to the toddler stage doesn't mean that he or she no longer needs nighttime protection from falls. In fact, some people might argue that that is when children need something to help keep them from falling the most. Fortunately, you don't necessarily have to keep your toddler in a baby crib forever. Instead, there are innovative devices known as kids' bed rails that you can affix onto their beds to keep them from falling or rolling out of their beds at night.

Types of Kids' Bed Rails

There's many different types of kids' bed rails on the market, so you'll want to know what the differences between each type are so that you'll be able to discern which type is best for your needs and make a more informed buying decision.

Swing-Down Bed Rails

As their name implies, swing-down bed rails affix to the sides of a kid's bed and swing down during the daytime so that your child can get in and out of the bed. At nighttime, you simply swing the bed rails up and lock them into position to protect your child from falling out of the bed, and then during the daytime, you unlock and lower them so that your child can get in and out of the bed. Also, with swing-down bed rails, you won't have the bed rails marring the look of your child's room, and it's also much easier to make your child's bed when you don't have to work around raised bed rails.

Fixed Bed Rails

Unlike swing-down bed rails, fixed bed rails do not move. As their name implies, they are affixed into place. There's both pros and cons to these types of bed rails just like their are the others types. The most notable pro with a fixed bed rail is that you don't have to worry about your child learning how to lower the bed rail and lowering it so that he or she could fall out of his or her bed at night. You also do have to worry about your child accidentally swinging down the bed rail. However, fixed bed rails are always there, which means that in order for your child to climb onto his or her bed, he or she will have to go through the tiny gap left on the top and bottom of the bed around the rails. Additionally, the rails will become a part of the room's aesthetics, and it might be more troublesome for you to make your child's bed every morning with the fixed bed rails there to get in the way.

Bumper Bed Rails

Another innovative option is the bumper bed rail. Bumper bed rails are the easiest to install since they simply consist of a bumper-type cushion that you place on either side of your child's bed underneath the sheet. Much like a speed bump, they impede your child's movement and keep him or her from rolling all the way off the bed. They are held in place by the fitted sheet that they're placed in, which means that they can literally be installed in just seconds. They're the most portable of all the bed rail options since you undo and transport them very easily. Some bumper be rails are constructed of foam while others consist of a blow-up variety, much like a pool floatie. Regardless of which type of bumper rail you use, they are ideal for setting up at a friend or grandparent's house when your child is staying the night since they are an easy, non-permanent solution to your child's nighttime rolling.

Factors to Consider

Before purchasing a kid's bed rail, there's a few factors you'll need to consider. In addition to considering your personal preferences, there's also a few specifications you'll need to make note of to ensure that you purchase a bed rail that's actually compatible with your kid's bed.

Bed Measurements

This might seem like a "duh" type of consideration, but you'd be surprised how many people jump the gun and purchase kids' bed rails without checking their kids' beds' specifications. You'll need to get the measurements of your kid's bed and ensure that you select from kids' bed rails that are designed for the size of bed that your child has to prevent the bed rails from being too big or not big enough for your kid's bed.

Bed Base

In addition to the measurements, you'll also want to consider the type of base your kid's bed has. There's many different types of toddler beds on the market, many of which comes with various types of bases. The type of base that your kid's bed has will directly affect which types of kids' bed rails are compatible with the bed. For instance, if your child's bed has a box spring, flat top or steel frame base, then it will make installing bed rails on the bed more difficult. Also, if your kid's bed has wooden slats, then you might also have to use zip ties to further affix the bed rail into place and keep it secure from shifting on the base.

Don't's

When installing kids' bed rails on your kids' beds, there's a list of don't's you should also keep in mind to ensure that you don't make any harmful, life-threatening mistakes.

  • Don't use the wall as a bed rail. Some parents will push their kids' beds against the wall so that they only have to purchase one bed rail, using the wall as the other rail. However, this is not safe at all since the child could accidentally kick against the wall and push the bed away from the wall where he or she could still fall. In worst case scenarios, your child could get caught between the bed and the wall. That's why it's always important to ensure you have a proper rail on each side of the bed even if the kid's bed is pushed against the wall.
  • Don't attempt to put the kids' bed rails together without reading the manufacturer's instructions. Products come with instructions for a reason, and following them in the order that they have them listed will usually save you time and hassle in the long-run and ensure that you install them properly from the get-go. You certainly don't want to accidentally install your kids' bed rails wrong and then have a gap present that your child could get trapped in. Likewise, you don't want the bed rails to fall off because they aren't properly affixed and don't provide the support that they're supposed to provide.
  • Don't use kids' bed rails with waterbeds, bunk beds or inflatable mattresses. All of these types of beds could prove dangerous when used with bed rails that could puncture them and cause your child to drown or suffocate (Actually, children under 5 should never sleep on a waterbed anyway). In fact, it's best to only use kids' bed rails with beds that have been approved by the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association since these products have been specially tested and deemed safe for children ages 2 to 5.

Buying bed rails for your kids is not a task to be taken lightly since the products are something that could potentially save your child's life. There's much to consider before purchasing kids' bed rails, but if you keep the tips outlined in this guide in mind, then you should be able to make a more informed buying decision. In addition to considering your wants and needs, you should also consider the above-listed safety factors.
