Kids Bike Buying Guide

Kids’ love for bikes is undeniable. For most of them, bikes are a major part of their childhood stories and memories. At times, it feels like a necessity to gift your child with a bike. It is almost like a rite of passage. Bikes come in different sizes, types, and designs. There is no such thing as a standard bicycle for a kid. It will all depend on what the kid likes, the purpose of the bike and, of course, the budget. Choosing the best bike for your child can be daunting. You want to pick the most suitable and the safest one. While doing this, you may not want your pockets to suffer so much damage. Striking this balance can be difficult. Thankfully, here are a few tips that will help you get your child a good quality bike.

Important things to consider while shopping for kids bikes

Overall size

Getting a perfect size is probably the most important factor you need to consider. Not only should the bike be long enough, but the height should be comfortable enough for the child to be able to control the bike. So, how do you choose and know the sizes? Well, you just need to know the size of your child in terms of their height and weight and then match that with the appropriate bike size. If a bike is too small or too large, it is going to cause trouble for the child and can be potentially dangerous for them. Bikes are sized by the diameter of their tires. For instance, a 12-inch wide tire would be ideal for a 2 - 4-year-old child. Most bike stores have a chart where you can compare the size of the bike with your child’s height. You don’t even have to worry. When you are ready to buy the bike for your child, just ask for the chart and the experts will guide you on the right size. It is important to note that the size might be the most appropriate feature to look for. However, it should not be overemphasized. There are a lot more other factors to take into account. For example, the size of the bike might be a good fit for your child but the brake system for the bike might be difficult for the child to use. Therefore, remember to do a more comprehensive inspection.

Seat height

Although tire size may give you a general idea of the bike your child needs, the seat height is the most appropriate indicator. So, how do you tell that the seat is right? Due to the difference in the frame designs, bikes with the same tire size can still have varying seat heights. The main thing to consider here is inseam height. This is the distance from the upper part of your thigh to your ankle. It's mostly used by tailors in fashion but is still a great technique for finding the perfect bicycle height. While seated at the bike seat your child’s legs should not be hanging off the ground. For a good balance, the feet should be able to comfortably rest on the lower pedal at full extension and still be able to touch the ground upon a slight bike tilt. This should help you know whether your child is too tall or short for the bike.

“Standover" height

This consideration is mostly for safety purposes. Test and see if there is enough space allowance for the child to comfortably lean over the top tube of the frame. This is called, “the stand-over” height. The bike tube is the frame that connects the front part of the bike with the rear. This gap prevents potential injury and provides for an extra space for aggressive riders to make a turn. Additionally, it prevents injury if a child hits an obstacle while pedaling down. The stand-over height is a common measurement criterion used by bike manufacturers. Nevertheless, it would be wise to have your child test the bicycle before purchase.

Weight ratio

It’s important to consider the ratio between your child’s weight and that of the bike. Although kids weigh differently, what you are looking for here is a balance. You want to avoid getting a bicycle that’s too heavy for your kid. A good option would be to get a bike that’s at least a third of your child’s weight. Heavy bikes can be strenuous to ride while very light bikes might get damaged easily over rough terrains. However, you could still use light bikes with reinforced frames. Most bike outlets have all this information. You just need to know the weight of your child and they will help you pick an appropriate bike.

Braking system

This is where the rubber meets the road! Brakes are an essential part of any bike. A child’s bike is as good as its braking system. The quality and functionality of these brake systems vary. For a child’s bike, however, the brakes should be simple to use. Generally, the brake systems are either responsive dual hand brakes or coaster brakes. Both of them have their merits and demerits. Coaster brakes bike They are also referred to as the back-pedal brakes. These are standard on most bikes and are generally low maintenance brakes. They can, however, cause a little bit of challenge for learners. Normally, beginners will tend to pedal backward when they are losing balance. This naturally helps them regain balance and get back to riding. Bikes fitted with coaster brakes cannot be pedaled backward. In case of emergency backpedaling, your child might fall off the bike and hurt themselves as they try to control the bike.

Handbrake bikes

As your child gets more experienced in bike riding, they begin to take more control of turns. This is where handbrakes come in handy. The main thing to consider here is the width of the hand brakes and the size of your child’s hand. Make sure that the brake handles are not too far apart from the handle itself. Closely fit hand brakes will make it easier for the child to grasp. Additionally, ascertain that the brakes are easy to use and are not too tightly fit. To be sure, use your pinky finger to test the brakes. If your finger is unable to press the brakes effortlessly, chances are the child’s hands will not be able to either. Therefore, have them adjusted so that your child is able to use them.

Buying from a bike store vs online outlets

Carefree online shopping is okay for things like accessories and clothes but not when it comes to sensitive things such as your child’s bike. You need to be extra cautious. Always, ensure you are buying from a reputable source. With online stores, you can get a wider variety of bikes and also get other customer reviews with ease. With a local store, however, you get more personalized attention and your child can even get to test the bike before purchasing with no qualms. That said, there are many other factors you could consider such as brand, design, frame thickness, spokes and so on. Whatever type of bike you settle with, make sure it is safe, comfortable and, most importantly, compatible with your child.
