Set Your Sights

Whether you're a professional, hobbyist, or just a collector looking to finish your collection, you may want to consider a laser scope when it comes to perfecting your aim with a gun. However, you may not be all too sure where to even begin when it comes to laser scopes. They may sound cool, but do they really help improve accuracy, or are they just flashy? If they do serve a practical purpose, then what laser attachment is the best for my gun and the purpose I'm using it for?

These are all excellent questions that will be tackled in this article. Here, you will learn about a few different types of laser attachments, the difference between red and green lasers, and what laser scope attachment will likely be best suited for certain hobbies and professions. From there, you can decide which laser scope attachment is best for you and your needs.

1. Red Versus Green

One of the first aspects of a laser you may want to consider is its color. Unless you're using a play laser, you're bound to find that the laser scopes come in either green or red. While the average user may think that it's just a matter of color preference, each color actually has its advantages and disadvantages.

The commonly used laser is the red laser. They're relatively cheap, and they have excellent durability. For those who only want to buy a single laser scope and have it last them awhile, then the red laser may have a slight advantage over the green laser. This color of the laser also possesses an ability to work well in a large range of temperatures. Between 15 and 120 degrees Fahrenheit, is its optimal temperate range. So, if you want to go hunting, and the temperatures may be on the colder or hotter side, then you want to make sure you use a laser that doesn't mind those temperatures. The red laser will likely be that laser.

However, the disadvantage that the red laser possesses is in its daytime visibility. During the daylight hours, a typical red laser can only be seen up to 25 or 30 yards. So, if your profession or hobby requires you to put a substantial amount of distance between yourself and the target, animal, or object, then the red laser may not do it for you. However, if you don't need to use the laser scope during the day, then this is a disadvantage that you don't have to worry over.

Where the red laser has the disadvantage during the day, the green light actually wins out against it. During the daylight hours, you can see the laser of up to 100 yards. As such, for professionals who need to use their firearm during the day, the green light laser scopes are obviously the best fit. The same goes for hobbyists who primarily hunt or shoot targets during the daytime.

The disadvantage of the green laser, however, is that they require more power than red light lasers. As such, they die faster than the red laser and need to be replaced more often. They also don't have as wide an optimum temperature range as red lasers do. Their preferred optimum range is 40 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Since the technology behind green lasers is more advanced, they are more expensive than red lasers. So, for those on a budget, you may want to consider a red laser light instead.

2. Laser Grip

Now, this article will dive into the different type of laser scope attachments. Again, you should keep in mind the intended use for the firearm, as well as the environment, to better determine which attachment will work best for you. The first that shall be discussed is the laser grip scope attachment.

As its name might suggest, this laser attaches to the grip of the gun. Most of them have a pressure-activated switch that turns the laser on. So, when you grip your handgun, the laser automatically turns on. This is an easy-to-use laser in that regard. You don't have to worry about finding the switch to turn the laser on. You also don't have to worry about the hassle of turning it on and off during the heat of a hunt or tournament.

You should also keep in mind that this form of laser attachment has to be fitted for the make and model of your gun. It isn't a "one size fits all," sort of laser attachment. So, for those who want an easy laser attachment that provides steady aim, you may want to consider the grip laser attachment.

One disadvantage of this form of a laser, however, is that there are many left-handed versions of this attachment. So, if you're left-handed, you may struggle to use the laser to its optimal use.

3. Rear Sight Laser

For someone just starting out with laser attachments, you can't go wrong with the rear sight laser attachment. It can be easily attached to the rear sight of your gun. They're also lightweight, so if you're just starting out with a gun, too, you don't have to worry about the laser weighing down your arm either. This makes this laser attachment especially popular among shooters since it doesn't add any unnecessary bulk to their firearm.

One disadvantage that some shooters claim is that this style of the laser because it is smaller and lighter, is less powerful. By that, they mean that the laser doesn't have as far a view as other attachments. You may want to give this attachment a try before choosing it if you intend to use your firearm for long distances. For the casual target shooter or professional, however, who don't need extended long range, this laser scope is an excellent selection.

4. Trigger Guard

For the hunter or professional who quickly needs to change firearms, this is an ideal laser scope for you. It can be easily removed and attached to numerous types of trigger guards. They're versatile and can be used on different types of guns. This form of a laser scope is also bigger than others. So, it has more power and can offer more yardage.

A disadvantage, however, is that the scope often interferes with resting the gun in the holster. So, if you intend to use this laser scope, then you might want to put off buying a holster until you find one that fits both the firearm and the laser scope. Or you can simply buy a new holster if you already own one, and the firearm no longer fits into it. One last problem that may arise is sometimes the attachment doesn't always secure itself tightly to the trigger guard.

As a result, the aim may be slightly off. Or it may shift with all of the jostlings that you're doing. This can severely affect your accuracy. So, if you're hunting or shooting targets in a championship, you may want to have a trigger guard laser scopes on each gun rather than just removing the scope and re-attaching to the new gun. In that way, you can make sure that each laser scope is securely attached to the trigger guard.

5. Guide Rod

This is a laser scope for the professionals. Attaching it to the guide rod can be a complex situation. As such, it should be left to those who are familiar with guns and laser scopes for installation. However, this laser scope offers fantastic accuracy. It also doesn't require a new holster, so you don't have to worry about procuring new equipment.

In addition, this form of laser scope doesn't change the shape of the gun or the weight. So, you can easily carry it and not have to worry about uncomfortable bulk or weight issues.

Take Your Aim

While there are numerous other scopes out there, these main types will help you decide on what scope is best suited for your needs. Know your needs, environment, and you'll be ready.
