LED Dimmer Switch Buying Guide

LED dimmer switches allow you to adjust the level of light throughout your home. With the right arrangement and style, you can lower the lights to establish a relaxing atmosphere or brighten them to perform tasks. Still, not all switches are the same. This guide provides an overview of the things to consider when searching for dimmers to accommodate your needs.

LED Bulbs

Before discussing switches, it is necessary to note the type of bulbs you will need. LEDs (Light-Emitting Diodes) bulbs are extremely efficient. Not only do they consume less energy than other types of bulbs, but also they have a long life. Generally, LEDs use 85 percent less energy and can last up to 25,000 hours. Nevertheless, you need to make sure you buy dimmable bulbs for the fixture to work properly.

Voltage Options

A dimmer switch reduces the voltage (electrical energy) delivered to LED bulbs. In order for electricity to flow smoothly, the switch has to convert the energy into light swiftly. Therefore, it is important to choose controls that can handle the electrical load. Refer to the manufacturer’s wattage requirements to ensure you select the right switch. Options include low-voltage, high-voltage, and universal fixtures

  • Universal switches have a steady startup and offer a full range of dimming options.
  • Electronic Low Voltage (ELV) switches operate via an electronic driver for use with track and under cabinet lighting.
  • Magnetic Low Voltage (MLV) switches are bulkier than their electronic counterparts are and operate with a magnetic driver.
  • High Wattage switches work with fixtures that contain multiple bulbs and exceed 600 watts like large chandeliers and recessed lights.

Dimmer Types

In most cases, you will discover five types of switches: single pole, multi-location, three-way, four-way, and plug-in. Each design has a mechanism called a triac that allows you to customize the lighting.

Single-Pole Dimmer:

The single-pole dimmer is easy to install. It controls one light fixture from a particular location. For example, you can dim the lights on a chandelier, ceiling fan or other overhead lighting. Plug-in Dimmer: No hardwiring is required to use a plug-in dimmer. To operate the device, you simply plug a floor or table lamp into the dimmer and place the cord in a wall outlet. This model may have a touch or dial feature. Three-way Dimmer: This option comes with two switches. With this type of set up, you can control one light from two separate locations. In addition to turning the lights on and off, the main switch controls the level of brightness. The second switch allows you to cut the lights off once you reach the top or bottom of a staircase or the end of a long hallway. Four-way Dimmer: The four-way dimmer works similar to the three-way model. However, it provides access to three or more dimming locations. This switch is ideal for use in rooms with more than one entrance. It is also a sensible option for areas with recessed lighting. Multi-location Dimmer: A multi-location dimmer lets you control lights from four or more areas. Placing companion dimmer switches strategically throughout a room gives you easy access to lights when needed. Some multi-location dimmers come with a remote control, so you can adjust lighting while sitting down to eat a meal or watch TV.

Control Styles

Whatever your preference—tap, toggle, or turn, you will find a variety of convenient control options. Some models include a delayed fade, a sensor, or have programming capabilities. Such features not only give you personalized control but also conserve energy. Here’s a brief description of the most common styles

  • Rotary dimmers have a knob that allows you to adjust the bulbs to precise lighting levels. You turn them clockwise for brightness and counterclockwise to dim. The dial also turns the lights on and off completely.
  • Toggle/rocker dimmers flip up and down like an ordinary light switch. They feature a dimmer option between the on and off function. To dim or brighten a room, you simply flick the switch until you achieve the preferred level of illumination.
  • Slide dimmers operate with a vertical sliding bar. The lights remain at the level you set until changed. Preset and slide-to-off options are also available.
  • Digital dimmers control light with a tap of the switch. They may feature additional controls to return lights to a preferred level.
  • Occupancy dimmers include motion sensors that turn lights on and off automatically as people enter and leave a room.
  • Programmable dimmers feature multiple options to set various scenes or light levels. You use a keypad to create dim lighting in the evening or bright lighting as needed. Select models have a vacation mode, so you can set the time for lights to turn on and off while you’re away.
  • Smart dimmers work with an app. The device connects to your wireless network and allows you to control the lights even when you are not at home. Premium models also have a voice command.

Dimmer Location Ideas

You can install dimmer switches practically anywhere in the home you need control and flexibility. Here are a few suggestions. Bathroom: Ease into your daily routine by placing a dimmer in the bathroom. It also comes in handy during bath time. Instead of using candles to create a relaxing atmosphere, you can enjoy a luxurious bath without worrying about a fire hazard.

Children’s Bedrooms:

In place of a night light, place a programmable dimmer switch in your children’s room. You can program the device to turn off after your child falls asleep and save on the electricity bill.

Hallways:

Illuminating pathways to bedrooms and bathrooms will prevent family members from injuring themselves and causing bumps in the night.

Kitchen:

Grab a late-night snack without disturbing others with blaring light.

Living Room or Study:

Add a plug-in dimmer to your favorite reading lamp, so you can enjoy a good book without turning on other lights in the room.

Porch:

For better energy consumption, install a dimmer switch to control the porch lights. You can turn the lights up when you plan to come home after dark and dim them for security before going to bed.

Installing or Changing a Dimmer Switch

The process for changing or installing a dimmer switch will vary per type and manufacturer. Always follow the instructions for the specific model you purchase. Pay attention to warnings, and consult with an electrician, if necessary. The following are general guidelines and not intended to override the manufacturer’s instructions

  • Turn the power off at the circuit breaker for the zone you plan to install the switch. Confirm the power is off with a voltage detector.
  • Put the switch in the off position.
  • Label the wires before disconnecting them from the old switch. Reattach the wires per the manufacturer’s instructions and set them back in the electrical box.
  • Mount the dimmer into position and tighten the screws before attaching the cover plate.
  • Turn the power back on the circuit breaker and flip the switch to make sure the lights turn on and off.
