Lug Wrench Buying Guide

To start with the basics, impact wrenches are power socket wrenches that loosen and tighten fasteners, such as bolts and nuts. They save time and energy while preventing injury and are especially useful when you encounter rusted or overtightened fasteners When using an impact wrench to tighten fasteners, start the process by hand and do not tighten the fastener all the way with the wrench. Finish the tightening process by hand also.

Impact wrenches are used by at-home DIYers for home and auto repairs and building projects. They are also used in work environments, such as automotive repair, product assembly, machinery maintenance, and construction.

Created in 1939 by Chicago Pneumatic, impact wrenches use power supplied by electricity, batteries, or air compressors to create torque (a rotational force) to turn a fastener.

Impact Wrench Buyer's Guide

Torque, Impacts per Minute, and No Load Speed

The power provided by the wrench is the most important feature. Impact wrenches with higher torque remove fasteners quicker and are more capable of removing stubborn fasteners. Impact wrenches should have a minimum of 150 ft-lbs (1800 in-lb). Some wrenches have a torque adjustment. This is a feature you should consider.

Impacts per minute is the number of times the hammer inside the impact wrench strikes the anvil in a minute causing the anvil to spin. The more impacts per minute, the more torque that it has to loosen stubborn fasteners, and the faster it can loosen and tighten fasteners.

No load speed is the speed of the wrench when it is running without being used to tighten or loosen fasteners. It may seem like a higher no load speed would be good to tighten or loosen fasteners quickly. However, what you gain in speed, you lose in torque.

Drive Size

The metal post where sockets are connected is called the drive. The standard drives for impact wrenches are 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2". Impact wrenches used for construction will have larger drives. Professional and backyard auto mechanics will use either a 3/8" or a 1/2" drive. A 3/8"-drive wrench will be smaller, but it will have less torque than a 1/2" drive wrench.

Size, Weight, Balance, and Overall Ergonomics

There are three considerations in deciding what size impact wrench to buy. The first consideration is that it is small enough to fit in the spaces where it will be used. However, a smaller size can mean less torque, so you may have to balance these two features. The wrench should also fit comfortably in your hand. This is not as important for casual home use as it is for commercial workers.

The weight of an impact wrench is another comfort issue when it will be used for long periods of time. A heavier wrench can be tiring.

Finally, the amount of time that you will be using the wrench over a prolonged period will determine how important the balance and ergonomics are to you. Those using impact wrenches casually at home will not be as concerned with this issue as those using the wrench a lot daily at work. If you use the wrench for work, try it to see how comfortable it is for you to use.

Should I Buy an Electric, Battery, or Air-powered Wrench?

For home use, electric or battery-powered wrenches are fine. A battery-operated wrench eliminates dealing with a cord while you are using the wrench. If you choose a battery-operated wrench, consider buying a brand that will allow you to share the charger with other tools. An air-powered wrench requires an air compressor, which is generally not practical for home use. Battery-powered impact wrenches are not practical for commercial use, where electric and air-powered wrenches are used.

The Grip

Impact wrenches with pistol grips are L-shaped. They are designed to be compact and fit in small spaces. Inline or straight impact wrenches are shaped and used like screwdrivers. The inline grip has a lower torque than the L-shaped grips.

Impact Sockets vs Standard Sockets

Use only impact sockets with an impact wrench. Impact sockets have thicker walls and can withstand more torque than standard sockets. Standard sockets will break if used on an impact wrench. It is easy to recognize an impact socket because they are all black.

To be able to use your impact wrench immediately, you should purchase some impact sockets. The sockets you will buy will depend on your intended use for the impact wrench. For casual home use you may only want to buy a few select sockets. If you intend to use the wrench more often for different size fasteners, then you may want to buy a socket set.

To help those new to socket sizes, sockets sets can contain only sockets measured in inches, metrics, or combination. SAE sets (Society of American Engineers) are measured in inches. Combination sets are generally best.

Most socket sets fit over the standard hexagonal fastener heads known as 6-point socket sets. In addition to 6-point sockets, you may want a few 12-point sockets. Using 6-point sockets prevents the socket from slipping off the fastener. However, in tight spaces, 12-point sockets provide a faster connection to the fastener.

You will probably want to buy a socket set that only includes impact sockets. Besides a variety of sockets, the set may contain adaptors that allow you to use a 3/8"-drive on a 1/2"-drive impact wrench and vice-versa. The set may also include extenders ranging from 1/2" to 20" for hard-to-reach areas. You can also get a combination of both shallow and deep sockets. Finally, you should get a 5/8" or 13/16" spark plug socket. This should give you enough of a variety of sockets to be able to start using your impact wrench.

Durability

To purchase a wrench with a durable casing, look for a wrench with a metal casing or a high-strength plastic casing. If you choose a brushless motor, it will contain less parts to break down or maintain.

Warranty

A warranty is a good investment even for a casual user. Those, who will use the wrench for work will want more coverage. Comparing warranties can be just as important as comparing features especially for those investing in high-end wrenches for work.

Do I need a high-end impact wrench?

Whether you can use a lower-end wrench or need a high-end wrench depends on how and how often your impact wrench will be used. For casual use at home, you could use a lower-end wrench. For those who rebuild cars as a hobby, you might want to spend a little more. For those who use an impact wrench a lot daily at work, you might want to purchase a good, high-end impact wrench for the features and the durability.
