Nasal Irrigator Buying Guide

Nasal Irrigator Image

Nasal irrigation has been used in Ayurvedic healing for thousands of years. This practice of cleansing the sinuses is called “Neti” and is a method used to open up your nasal passages and revitalize them. Your nasal passages are one of your body’s first lines of defense against germs and bacteria and so nasal irrigation makes sense for keeping these areas free of toxins.

Nasal irrigators come in many forms. Plastic bottles with specially designed tips, suction-type devices, and even tubing specifically manufactured for nasal irrigation are all available for purchase. The most popular device for nasal irrigation is called a neti-pot. Neti-pots come in a variety of materials like copper, plastic, ceramic or stainless steel. They commonly resemble a teapot with a very long spout. You fill the pot with a saline solution and pour it into each nostril separately. The saline solution travels up through your nasal cavity. As your nasal cavity is flooded, mucus and dust are forced with the flow of the saline until it exits the opposite nostril. You then repeat this process through the other nostril, clearing it of excess mucus and debris as well.

Who should use a nasal irrigator?

If you are prone to allergies then you are well aware of the discomfort they can cause to your nose. A nasal irrigator can be an effective treatment to combat some of the effects of allergens by cleansing your nostrils and soothing itching burning, irritation or a runny nose. By flushing the nasal passages, the mucous is thinned out and inflammation is reduced.

For other people, the allergen itself is the medication that is meant to clear the nasal passages and help you breathe better. For these people, having a cold or sinus infection can be very difficult if they are not able to take antihistamines or medications that help clear the nostrils. Nasal irrigation can work well for these people as it gently opens the airways and helps them to breathe without the use of medications with potentially uncomfortable side effects.

Nasal irrigation can be particularly effective for children as well because it is safe, gentle and all-natural. Nasal irrigation devices come in small sizes specifically made for kids.

Nasal irrigation has also been used successfully to reduce snoring, heighten the sense of taste and smell and relieve sinus pain and pressure.

How should it be used?

Most nasal irrigation devices use a saline solution that helps cleanse and soothe the nasal passages. Often, the pot will come with a powdered form of the solution that you can mix with water. You can also purchase extra solution when this runs out. It is very important to follow the accompanying directions.

You should begin with a throughly clean pot or device. This can generally be accomplished by rinsing in hot soapy water and rinsing carefully, then allowing it to air dry. The nasal irrigator should be cleansed after every use and periodically sterilized. Depending upon what type you get, you might use the dishwasher, boiling water, or even the microwave for sterilization. Again, you should ready the directions carefully.

Always use bottled distilled or sterilized water. Never take it directly from the tap as tap water contains small amounts of protozoa and bacteria, as well as other microorganisms, including amebae. When tap water is swallowed, it does not pose a problem because stomach acid elimates these threats , but they should never go into your nose as serious infection could develop. If you must use tap water, it should be thoroughly boiled for several minutes and left to cool until it is suitable for use.

Each type of nasal irrigator will come with instructions on use, but typically speaking, you will tilt your head sideways over a sink and position the spout or opening into your nostril. Breath normally through your mouth as you slowly pour the saline water into the first nostril. Continue until the chamber is empty. Allow the liquid to thoroughly drain through the opposite nostril. Repeat the same procedure with the other side of your nose.

After using, you can gently blow each nostril with a clean tissue. Be sure to clean the sink and your nasal irrigation device for the next use.

Does it hurt?

Using a nasal irrigator or neti pot does not hurt. First time users may find it to be an odd sensation, and occasionally water will trickle into the throat but this is no cause for alarm. Simply spit it out. If you are suffering from painful sinus pressure, using the irrigator may cause slight discomfort because of the positioning of your head, but will soon be alleviated once you have completed the irrigation.

Who should not use nasal irrigation?

Nasal irrigation is regarded as generally safe for most people, but should not be used for more than 1 to 3 weeks without consulting a physician. Prolonged use can irritate the mucous membranes of the nose, causing unwanted discomfort. Those who are prone to nosebleeds should avoid them because of their drying effect. For sanitary reasons, nasal irrigation devices should be used by one person only. Each member of the household should have their own.

What is the best type to get?

The kind of nasal irrigator you purchase is largely a matter of preference. Your physician or homoeopath may have specific brands or recommendations if you ask. You can look online for a well-made product with good reviews and see what other people are using. The size and weight should be comfortable for you to handle, so understand that plastic is going to be easier to hold than ceramic, for example. But ceramic is usually more durable. Some models are smaller and more portable than others, so this could factor in your purchasing decision as well.

Whatever your preference is, if you have never tried nasal irrigation, now is a great time to check it out. Studies have shown that 87 percent of doctors now recommend nasal irrigation to their patients who are suffering from nasal decongestion, sinus issues and upper respiratory problems. Better breathing and cold and allergy releif without the use of medications and harsh nasal sprays is a benefit most everyone can take advantage of.
