NiMh Charger Buying Guide

Not only are NiMh batteries more cost effective, but they also last longer. The only issue is that it can be hard to find the best chargers for these types of batteries. There are so many different options and some can be hard to understand. The good news is that everything will make sense once you learn what everything is. We've put together a buying guide for the different features that can come with these types of chargers.

Battery Capacity

The first thing to look at is the battery capacity of the unit. This is just how many batteries can be charged at one time. The most common capacity is 4 batteries, but there are chargers out there that charge less or more. Some actually charge 8 batteries at once. Another thing to look at in terms of capacity is whether or not you can charge just 1 or 2 batteries at a time. For instance, you might have a unit that can charge 4 batteries at once, but you only need to charge 1 or 2 batteries at a certain time. If you can't do this, then you'll have to wait until all 4 batteries die before charging. This is an inconvenience because you'll have to wait until all 4 are charged before using the product that takes the batteries. On the other hand, if it can charge 1 or 2 at a time, you can switch out the dead batteries for fully charged and continue using the product while the other batteries are charging.

Unit Size

The next thing you want to look at is the size of the unit. You don't want to have something that's huge and has a hard time fitting anywhere. You also don't want something so small that it can be easily lost or misplaced. One thing to keep in mind is that the more batteries that can be charged at one time, the bigger the unit is going to be and units that charge a lower amount of batteries will be smaller. With that being said, there are some units that have an area that extends. This means that you'll only have to pull out the extender when you want to charge a larger number of batteries. The best thing to do is just look at the area where you'll have the charger and look at the size. If you can, use a tape measure so you know the exact size. Once you do that, you'll be able to look at the size of the charger and make sure it'll fit.

Method

Different chargers use different methods to charge. There are usually 2 common methods. The first one runs on a timer, while the other one will let you know when it's done. The one on the timer is usually relatively cheap and isn't the best. Since they are on a certain amount of time, the batteries can easily be overcharged and get messed up. They could even lose some of it's charge. For example, before charging, the battery might have lasted around 10 days but charging on this type of charger can bring it down to only staying charged for 2 days. The other method is much better and more efficient. Often times, these chargers have indicators for each battery slot. For instance, say you're charging 4 batteries. If battery 2 gets done first, it will let you know. In addition to giving out a sound to let you know, there are often lights that change colors. This really helps prevent overcharging and can keep your batteries working well.

Interface

The next feature you need to look at is the interface of the charger. Some are simple and only have lights to let you know when the batteries are charged, while the more fancy ones have digital interfaces. if you're looking for something easy that let's you charge your batteries and go, then a simple one is great for you. On the other hand, if you're looking for something that has more features, you'll do well with a digital interface. Many times, it will have little pictures of batteries and you'll be able to see exactly how charged they are. In addition, these ones usually have some kind of indicator that will make noise to let you know they're done. This could be anything from a beep to a longer sound. Keep in mind, these fancier products are usually quite a bit more expensive than the simple models. With this being the case, you'll have to decide if the price is worth what you're looking for.

Charge Time

One of the most important features of a charger is how long it takes to charge the batteries. This is especially important if you need your batteries in a short amount of time. You don't want to have to wait several hours just to charge batteries. Some chargers will have batteries fully charged in an hour or two, while other charges might take 4 hours or more. This isn't as much of a deal breaker if you aren't usually trying to charge and go, but most people are going to want something that charges fast. The best thing to do is look at all of the information before you buy. It will tell you how long it takes to charge batteries. If you're buying from an online store, you can actually look at reviews to see if the actual charge time is more or less than what the information says. If it's less, that's great, but if it's more, you might want to look at other available options.

Battery Sizes

Something else you should look for is what sized batteries the charger can charge. Some chargers can only charge AA and AAA, but others can charge those plus D batteries, C batteries, possibly 9V batteries, and more. If you only use AA and/or AAA, then you don't have to worry about trying to find a charger that charges all the other ones. On the other hand, if you use multiple types of batteries, you'll benefit from looking for one that charges multiple sizes. One thing to keep in mind is that it might be very difficult to find a charger that charges all of them. Most of them will charge AA and AAA, and sometimes D and C. Finding one that also charges 9V can be pretty difficult. The good news is that you can find another charger that's only charges the 9V for a relatively good price. They aren't overly expensive, and they aren't too bulky, so you won't have to worry about the charger taking up too much space.

Other Features

The final thing to look for is what kind of other features the charger has. There are so many options, so you want to see what is and isn't available. Some of the common features are listed below

  • Quick Charge: This will charge your batteries with a high level of power. Instead of waiting hours, your batteries will be charged in around 15 minutes.
  • Automatic Shut-Off: When your batteries are fully charged, the charger will turn off.
  • Trickle Charge: If your batteries are charged but are still in the charger, it will top of the charge every so often.
  • Overheating Indicator: The charger will have lights and sounds to let you know it's overheating.

Keep in mind, these are only a few of the options and there are several others. The best thing to do is just look at the box, if you're in the store, or look at the product description, if you're online. These will let you know about all the features that are available.

As you can see, there are quite a few options. The best thing to do is just think about which of these features you need and which ones you can do without. It might take a little time to find the perfect charger for your needs, but once you do, you won't have to buy traditional batteries every again!
