Paraffin Bath Buying Guide

A paraffin bath, also known as a paraffin dip, is used for thermotherapy to help treat different conditions that cause pain, stiffness and inflammation, as well as being used for cosmetic purposes for moisturizing and making skin appear younger. A paraffin bath unit is a special device designed to heat paraffin wax and melt it while keeping the wax at a safe temperature so hands, feet and other body parts that are being treated can be safely dipped into the wax. It's important to always use the proper equipment for this type of therapy to avoid burning yourself or others with hot paraffin and to receive the maximum benefits. Different paraffin baths have different features so familiarize yourself with them to find the best one for you.

Ideally a paraffin bath should heat the paraffin to around 125 degrees F. Many offer a minimum to maximum temperature range. While shopping for one look for a model with an adjustable temperature knob or settings. This will give you some control over how hot the wax gets so you can adjust it to a comfortable temperature. There are models that have a readout that displays the temperature for additional temperature control and to eliminate the guesswork. Some of the higher price range units feature two internal thermostats to keep it in the ideal temperature range and ensure your safety.

If you are willing to wait for your wax to heat up and want to save on energy, look for a model that doesn't suggest keeping it on around the clock. By having a unit that you don't have to keep on all the time you will also avoid potential overheating of the unit. Different models melt wax at different rates so consider whether you want a model that may heat up at a higher temperature and melt the wax more quickly at around 20 minutes, or melt a smaller quantity at a time also resulting in a quicker melt. Some units may take up to 60 minutes to melt the wax. Using a unit that can be turned off also ensures any humans and pets won't accidentally come into contact with the warm wax when it is not being in use.

If you want to get able to access your wax at any given moment, you will want a unit that is made to be kept on all the time. Higher end paraffin baths may have additional safety features that makes keeping them on all the time less of a hazard. This is ideal if paraffin baths are something you offer to clients or you are a frequent user of your unit. Look for one with a standard 3 prong plug. Some units have a detachable cord and some come with replacement cords. There are models that are labeled as energy efficient so look for those if you want to conserve energy for environmental or financial reasons but still have a continuously running unit.

If you plan on having a bath that you leave on and the asthetic is important to you, you will want to consider how your model looks. Most have a hard plastic exterior. White is a common color for paraffin baths with different colors of accents depending on the brand you buy. You may see metal accents on a more expensive professional model. Some are more rounded or oval shaped while others are more rectangular.

Interiors of your paraffin bath need to be leakproof so make sure your unit has a sturdy and well constructed interior. Also make sure the interior is insulated to keep the wax warm.

Paraffin baths are not one size fits all. The baths range in depth and in capacity. Generally you will pay more for a larger bath. A small paraffin bath is ideal for personal use when you are only wanting to dip a hand or an elbow. Small models may also accommodate small to average feet. The benefits of a smaller model are that the device will take up less counter or storage space and be more economical. A larger unit is ideal if you have the need to melt a greater quantity of wax at one time or need to accommodate larger body parts. It may also fit an adult male's feet better. A deeper unit will allow deeper submersion in the wax which is ideal if you want to cover higher up on your arm or leg. Look for a size that will best fit your needs so you won't be disappointed.

Models can come with or without a lid. A safety latch or lock is a convenient feature to have on the lid if you plan to move the unit or have concerns about it getting bumped. It is also helpful if you are worried about a child getting into it.

Units that are meant to be more portable may include carrying handles and be lighter in weight for easier transportation. These are ideal features if you intend to take it with you traveling or to a spa night with your friends at somebody else's home. A heavy-duty one may be more ideal if you are using it in a professional capacity and it will remain in one spot.

Other features available on, or with, a paraffin bath may include light up ready light indicator displays so you know when it is heated to the proper temperature for use, a see-through lid to see if the wax has melted and wax and liners that come with the unit to get you started using it right away. While none of these features are imperative, they are convenient.

Whether you want to invest in a high end model or keep in the lower range will depend on your intended use. There are many units that will do the job in both ranges, as well as the middle range. A lower range unit is recommended if you want to enjoy the experience of a paraffin bath on an occasional basis for cosmetic reasons and don't care to spend a lot of money. A mid-range unit is ideal for frequent personal use. This would be good for someone using it for thermotherapy in their home that may be using it multiple times a week. It may also allow you a slightly larger unit. Models in the higher range are recommended for professional use, providing you with the most advanced features and durability to serve your clients more efficiently.

Paraffin baths make a nice addition to your self-care and client care.
