Ping Pong Table Buying Guide

Ping Pong Table Image

Table tennis was invented in England in the 1880s. It became an Olympics sport at the Seoul Games in 1988. At the competitive level, the ball travels back and forth at up to 90 mph.

In addition to being a fun game that everyone from kids to seniors can enjoy, table tennis has surprising health benefits. Players burn calories, exercise both their upper and lower bodies, improve their balance and coordination, sharpen their reflexes and stimulate their brains. Playing doesn't put a lot of stress on the joints or have a high risk of injury. Dr. Daniel Amen, a prominent psychiatrist and brain-imaging expert, calls it the world’s best brain sport.

When you’re shopping for a table, it’s important to note that Ping-Pong is the registered trademark of one manufacturer. In other words, not all table-tennis tables are Ping-Pong tables. Ping-Pong also makes paddles, balls and accessories.

There are a number of other fine makers as well. Kettler, Butterfly, Stiga, Joola and Killerspin are some of the most popular brands. Cornilleau is known for its ergonomic designs. Viper uses striking color schemes.

Whichever brand you go with, there are several things to consider before buying.

Who Will Play

Tables are made for all skill levels and budgets. If you just plan to break out the table for family fun now and then, you can get by with a standard model that folds up for convenient storage. If you’re buying for a busy recreation center — or if your basement is the neighborhood hangout — you probably need something fairly bulletproof.

Beginner tables are ideal for light recreational use at home. They don’t have a lot of performance-enhancing features, but they’re good tables for learning the game. Many are constructed so that half the table can be flipped up and locked to serve as a backboard for practicing or playing alone. Joola, Butterfly and a few other manufacturers offer junior-size tables for kids.

Intermediate tables are built to last longer, and they are worth the investment if they'll get a lot of use. Most are sturdy enough to withstand frequent folding, storing and reassembling. That’s a big plus if you use your game room or basement for other purposes.

Advanced tables have to meet the tournament standards of the International Table Tennis Federation. They’re heavier and have thicker tops for more consistent bounce. If you have a young Forrest Gump who is serious about the sport, these are the best tables for training to play competitively.

Where the Table Will Be Used

You can save money by getting a table made only for indoor use. Outdoor tables cost more because of the waterproofing materials.

However, you must be absolutely sure that you’ll only use the table inside. Indoor tables are made of specially treated wood, but they warp in high temperatures, direct sunlight or damp conditions. Manufacturers recommend them only for heated, insulated buildings. If you plan to set up play in your garage or an especially damp basement, you should probably spring for an outdoor model.

Also, be aware that table-tennis table covers don’t provide enough protection in hot, sunny weather or harsh winter conditions.

Some outdoor tables are made of tough wood and covered on all sides by rust-resistant aluminum. Others are made of durable synthetic laminate. In either case, they can stand up to sunlight, rain and snow.

You might like the flexibility of being able to play inside or outside, but some serious players insist that outdoor tables don’t produce the same bounce. If you’re just playing for fun, the difference is not likely to be an issue.

The Size of the Play Area

Take good measurements of the room that people will be playing in. A table in play position measures 9 feet long by 5 feet wide, and the brackets for the net add about a foot. To avoid dinging your funny bone, allow for at least 5 feet of play space on all sides.

Don’t forget to measure doorways, stairwells and hallways. Even when collapsed for storage, tables are bulky. The manufacturer should provide exact measurements on storage height.

Table Thickness and Performance

In general, the thicker the top is, the more consistent the bounce will be over the entire surface area. Thick tables are also less likely to warp and crack, which exposes the inner layers to moisture.

The best tops for indoor play are usually constructed of high-density particle board or medium-density fiberboard. For a small family that will be playing indoors, 5/8-inch thickness is sufficient. A table for a school, church or community center should be at least 3/4-inch thick. The tables the pros use in tournament competition are closer to an inch thick.

Outdoor models have thinner tops, but they are well-supported and very dense.

Professional players have developed a pretty simple test of quality and performance. When the ball is dropped from a distance of 1 foot, it should bounce on the table at least nine times.

According to some experts, the Stiga Advantage is one of the best-performing tables in its price range. It fits all the specs for tournament play, but it's very affordable for families or youth groups.

Frames, Legs, Wheels and Portability

Stationary tables have better frame strength than foldable tables, but you forfeit the convenience of portability and easy storage. Metal frames, or undercarriages, are typically more durable than wood.

Frames should have sturdy legs. Square legs are more structurally sound than round ones. Height-adjustable legs are nice to have for families with young children. For outdoor tables, adjustable feet are handy for unlevel playing surfaces.

Not all tables with thin legs are flimsy. Just be sure to look for quality construction materials and plenty of supporting crossbars. Competitive players in hard-fought games tend to lunge over the table with their full weight.

The wheels on portable tables need to roll, obviously, but not so freely that you could have a runaway table on your hands. Rubber ball bearing systems for smooth, safe rolling are on most high-end tables. Make sure that the locking mechanisms on wheels are sturdy enough to prevent motion during play.

Read online reviews about ease of assembly, transporting, folding and storing tables. Even with a galvanized steel frame, for example, the Cornilleau 500 Crossover Indoor/Outdoor model gets high marks for being easy to transport and set up quickly.

Rail and Storage Feature

Most tables are finished with a heavy steel rail, or apron, for additional stability and enhanced appearance. Some styles have a built-in accessory compartment for storing paddles and balls.

Assembly

If you have your table delivered, unpack it right away to check for possible damage during transport. Read the instructions for assembly and verify that you have all the parts and accessories. Almost all tables come with the net and posts.

Depending on the type of table you buy, assembly can take anywhere from 15 minutes to more than an hour. You might need to recruit some helpers if the table is especially heavy. Many buyers pay extra to have someone do the dirty work for them.

Safety

Again, table tennis is a low-risk sport, but shoddy manufacturing does come with the potential for injury.

Any table you buy should lock into place for play. Test the brakes on the wheels. Some makers provide corner guards to prevent little ones from injury when the table is not in use.

Cost and Other Factors

Tables cost anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. That's why it's so important to think about where, by whom, and how often the table will be used.

Many trusted manufacturers sell affordable products of high quality, so don't assume that the most expensive table is best for your needs. Do look for a warranty, and read online reviews written by folks who have had their tables for a while.
